Detect magic and common sense. Looking for obvious precious metals, high quality items, coins, jewelry, gems, etc. If it’s not clear, it gets collected and assessed later via Wieldskill/appraise.

The robe gives off an aura of magic, nothing else does.  The silk pouches are high quality and contain what you assume are components for spells.  The hairpins look like they are finely crafted.
