thoughts, xp, and a recap for Valdis
-
Ruby spends some time on the days we were in LaFar and DeFar adjusting her new breastplate using the forge and her super magical forging hammer. She is very happy while doing that work, whistling and chattering about what great luck her father has passed along to her.
-
She makes sure to compliment Godric and Lachlan's new swords when she sees them practicing with them. She also commends the towns are how wise they were to destroy the evil items the Brethren had, I was worried when we came back they would have fallen into the wrong hands.

RECAP
We spoke with the avatars about what to do next and we also found out that Rubius is alive, albeit imprisoned along with other deities of protection, so Ruby was elated to hear that. We gathered our newly acquired items and made our way across the barrier again.
Upon arrival, we made our way across craggy land and back to LaFar. We were assaulted by Ettin's along the way. We managed to defeat them and question a couple of the survivors, but they weren't much help. We made our way back to town to mouth agape looks when the townsfolk saw we survived the barrier. We explained we were looking for direction on where to go next, so they showed us a schism in the stars that we could only assume was the rift in space.
We then traveled to NeFar to tend to the defeated Brethren's items, but the good townsfolk took matters into their own hands and tossed all his items into the barrier to remove any taint of evil magic emanating from them. With that task behind us and no more reason to be there, we travelled back to LeFar via wind tunnel and met with the clerics again. They reminded us of the details they spoke of in the past when other visitors came through town some years ago chasing the "dark man" through the lands. They headed north to the closest outlying town to LeFar. I forget if that's Lumaal or Calanfair. With that knowledge, we packed up mundane travelling gear, bathed, ate, slept and planned to set forth the next morning. Being roughly 1000 miles away, it'll take some time, but Uther has the ability to summon fiery horses to our aid and carry us quickly across land. This will substantially reduce our travel time.
On a side note, we were apparently "off our game" according to DM as we missed several key points, hints, and clues throughout the last couple sessions. One of those things was questioning the avatars. Uther eventually remembered that we forgot to ask why Marina is being chased among several other pressing issues. That being said, we're pressing on nonetheless. We'll inevitably get answers in our travels for better or worse.
-
Lumaal is the city you are heading towards.
-
We previously learned that Udarin was sent years before us to investigate the rifts. Do we know who this “dark man” was?

You didn’t inquire about him or about those chasing him.
-
For four days you ride north by northeast. The stars are bright and clear so it is easy to keep your bearing. The lands are all rolling grasslands, meadows, as far as you can see in three directions. Far to the west you can make out mountains.
On the evening of the fourth day you see a settlement. There is smoke from a few chimneys. At one time you suspect it was a fair sized town, but now only a few buildings show signs of being occupied. It is surrounded by farmland, but much of it is fallow. There are four watchtowers and moments after you see the town you hear the southern and eastern tower ring their warning bells.

False. The reason we even know about the story is because we asked about it. When we first entered LaFar, the town elders told us about it but they didn't have any details other than that they were from Habololy and that it happened roughly 20 years ago. They didn't have names, motives, or anything else other than the general direction they went chasing the dark man.
We never asked anyone in NeFar because we were too busy saving lives.
As far as the avatars go, well, we simply dropped the ball on that one.
-
XP?
-
Ruby practices with her bow during the trip. It is clear from her fumbling against the Ettins that she is not accustomed to using it and you may be surprised that she doesn't manage the bow well even with practice.

Sorry- hastily posted. I should have been more specific. You didn’t follow up with the Avatars.

We have no proof that Udarin or those before us where even on the correct path, but I guess it makes sense to follow up. Since it is literally the only lead we have at the moment. I mean, it's possible we all forgot all the other good information when we went through the barrier.

Once we get to a large population center, I think we will get some better information. We may also want to be on the look out for things that may protect us from the barrier should we have to go back.

Oh.. if we have to go back through, we've failed in more than one way. I will not be going back through! That is the definition of insanity

Agreed.

Uther says privately to Lachlan, Dylan, Tessa and Marina: “I’m worried that Ruby’s quirky optimism has turned into dangerous delusion. And Godric is so loyal to her that he’s blind to it. Their judgement is compromised. We should keep a close eye on our friends, I worry they will do something foolish or dangerous. Again.”

Is Tessa a wizard? If yes, does she have any interest in trading spell books?

Yes (Illusionist) and yes. She does not have evocation spells.

What if anything do you do in response to the warning bells? You are about 3/4 of a mile away, on top of a low hill.

Not sure if the warning bells are a plea to us or because of us. Regardless, Godric charges towards the town on his celestial mount with flaming greatsword drawn.

"Godric stop! If they think we are a danger, that will make it worse. Let us approach peacefully."

Did somebody say something? I'm afraid I can't hear anything over the thundering hoofs of my celestial steed.

Stop.. your giving us black colored folk a bad name!!

If those bells were about us, I would think the south and west towers would be ringing seeing as we are traveling north/northeast. And it's not like we are such a huge group that we should look intimidating....except, everyone seems to think Godric is some kind of daemon. Still, if we want to stop Godric, Uther, can't you just end the spell that we are all riding on? It's hard t look intimidating when your horse disappears and you are sliding face first through the dirt.

I'm riding my celestial mount. Dismissing the spell would only serve to prevent the rest of the group from catching up with me.

Acknowledging that my math isn’t great- it will take Godric 3 minutes to reach the town perimeter at a full gallop. During minute 1 what if anything do the rest of you do?

The instant it appears as if he starts that way, yell to stop. I doubt he can get from stopped to can't hear me before I yell.

People are in need. A distress call has gone out. I charge full speed ahead.

Can our summoned mounts keep up with him?

Anyone have a white flag?

Anyone have a white flag?
We have very little equipment.

Sits.. start to ponder all the things in his life he has done wrong.
-
As Dylan sits, Godric nobly charges off at a full gallop. He sees himself as doing the right thing, although whoever is watching his approach is likely terrified by the visage of a charging black knight with flaming greatsword raised triumphantly overhead...

Finally understands the warnings in the book of Dwarven Common sense! wondering if the epiphanies from the book always come on the razor edge of life and death. Melody.. why curse us with THIS knowledge!!

Anyone have a white flag?
You at least have a spare white shirt or two.

Lady Tessa, as a master illusionist, could you create some type of highly visible message in the sky indicating our peaceful intent? Perhaps that will give them pause before they pepper the fearsome Godric full of arrows.

Good thing my armor deflects arrows. ;)

Arrow. Singular. Per round. If it’s the DMG version. Maybe we’ll find out soon…

A minute into Godric’s ride 8 women and six men run out to the meager fence that marks the town boundary. Another man climbs into the watch tower. All of them are armed with what you are fairly sure are guns. The man in the tower has one with an especially long barrel.

I assume we are so far back we cannot see that.

Anyone following Godric can see what is happening. Dylan can see at least the figures moving even if he hasn’t followed.

If anyone has gotten a level since the start of the season let me know.

I am followed behind but not a full gallup.
No level yet here.

Uther stays mounted and hangs back with Dylan to debate which verses of the DBoCS are most applicable to this situation. While chatting, he throws up dancing lights high above them to create 4 white orbs arranged in a compact square and makes them move like a flag in the wind. “Think that looks like a white flag? Best I can do other than airing out my laundry.”
Uther gained a level after the last round of pity xp. He is 8th.

When Godric is about 500’ from the fence-line, four more men frantically wheel out an artillery piece. It has a large barrel in the center with five smaller barrels around it.
We will pick up there.
