On non-rpging notes: Harrick is now Zunder's 2nd most played character in 3rd edition.  Also, the group of five players from tonight had not been the exact group since February 2005.

I have no recollection of playing with Terrorshard when he was an adolescent. I must be getting old.

I was 22 in 2005, not really an adolescent.  I think I started with you guys in 2002.

Now that you are old and wise, figure out what you can about the ruins.

At a glance, how far down does it seem to go before it gets wider.  (Where the lit arrow swung underneath)

Any chance we could talk the airship into hovering lower and dropping the ladder we use to board down into the well.  Do they have another ladder we can anchor to the airship to use if not their main one?

You can yell up and ask, and they do have a spare that they will lend to you.  You will have to find a way to anchor it.

I do this, if they lowered the hovering distance of the airship enough to give us 100ish feet of ladder lowered down into the well that should suffice.  Actually, Harris should ask for it...

They are not willing to lower the airship that low over the well.  They will give you the ladder.

You will have to find a way to anchor it.
This reminds me of that time my last adventuring party and I were trying to track the umber hulks responsible for harassing a bunch of small villages in the outskirts of the Rosetree Forest. We followed their trail into the mountains nearby and discovered a small crevasse, very much like this well, that we thought was the entrance to their lair. Should've known better, in retrospect it was way too small of an opening for the bulk of a hulk. Perfect size though for a family of dire bats, who were not very pleased to be woken up in the middle of the day by a couple people dropping in on them. My wife Sadie tore our ranger a new one after that. Halfling women may seem gentle and kind, but you do not want to get on their bad side.

Anyway...anyone have any pitons?

I say we lower one of our wizards down on a rope and have them blast a fireball down the cave before we go crawling around.

How about that. For once Harrick and I agree on something. We have no clue what's down there. Could be where are the missing "loved ones" are being kept. We need more info.

What happened to the living bats?

On an unrelated topic, any way we could push back our departure date a few days? I could use some crafting time.

If loot was the main goal of coming to these ruins, then down there is our best bet.  We could get the digging machines and excavate the site, or we can just suck it up and go down.

We're not here to loot anything.  We're here to explore these ruins and eliminate any undead threat that may be present.  Hopefully we can determine the source of this illusion while we're down there.

If no one else volunteers, I'll go down first.

The word "loot" was thrown out there in discussing coming out here.  This is still a business agreement between us and our employer.

Tuco is surely not going down first.

Marston can go down, the only question is how do you secure the ladder?

Is the rope long enough to wrap around one of the ruined buildings?  If not, can we secure some large pieces of stone from the foundation of the ruins to tie it to?  We may even be able to sailor knot it right around the well itself.

There are stone foundations everywhere, it should be fairly simple to secure it to one f the more solid ones.

It is, as long as someone has Use Rope.

I think it is safe to assume that someone on the ship is very proficient at using ropes.  I relay to the airship to send the rope down with someone who can secure it well.

Good point.

After it is tied off securely, Marston gets ready to descend.  Any spells cast upon him?  I believe there was a light spell dropped into the water already.

Yes.  The Sheriff is pulling rank.  We're not blasting anything unless provoked.

Correct on the light. There is also one on an arrow that is dangling on a string down the well.

Habastly will bless everyone with water breathing after my I finish my prayers.

So you are spending an hour changing spells before you descend?

"I have it, but not memorized.  But simply, your  not sticking me in a hole and shooting a fireball down a tunnel.  That's silly.  One,  Your assuming the fireball would effect whatever might be down the tunnel.  Two, your assuming that there is anything down the tunnel worth shooting.  Three...Your assuming that whatever might be down the tunnel is there before the first turn in the tunnel so I can actually hit them with the fireball  Four.. If all those things are true.. then there is something pretty nasty waiting for me to slide past it's living quarters so it can eat me.  None of the above is a valid reason to stick the fat man down a hole.  Sorry find a different noob."  he mubles something about if he was allowed to have skeleton badgers they would happily crawl down the tunnel and blow up for him if something actually lived down there, but no.. undead are two evil.. then creep me out.. wahh wahh wahh.. "

If everyone is finished whining about fireballs, I'm heading down.  I load all my firearms before climbing down.

So after an hour, Finn casts Water Breathing on Marston and he begins to descend.  THe ship agrees to wait until he sees the bottom, another 5 to ten minutes, before leaving.

Correction, I cast extended water breathing on everyone. 32 hrs/5 people = 6.4 hr/ea.

Tuco watches from a distance as Marston begins to be lowered.

After he gets half way down, your undead sense goes off everywhere down there in the water....dozens of undead.

Can I see anything with the light spell that was cast on the stone?  I tug the rope to signal that I want to be held in place.  I also ready one of my frag grenades in case I have to drop one into the water.

Whatever it is, it is deep enough in the water that you can't see it.

The water is fairly deep (more than five feet) and the light you dropped isn't illuminating much from the bottom of the water.

I can pinpoint location, so are these undead below the 5ft. of water, attached to the sides of the well, hovering in the air, or somewhere else?

They are moving around in the water at various depths.

Is there an area with a heavy concentration of undead?  If so, I'd like to drop a grenade into that area.

The hole is only so big, so you have limited ability to direct it.  In addition, you are not certain it will work under water.  Those aside, you can do it and get a good size group of them.

Okay, I'll try to time it so the blast goes off right at the surface of the water.  The blast radius is more than enough to get underwater.

Before doing so, I ask that the group test the rope to make sure they can pull me up.  So, call to them, set the charge to detonate on surface impact, then have them pull me up.
