Zalthor (Malchia, Icefia)

The wild bugbear lived a life matching his mental state.  Bouncing from place to place and joining with all manner of adventures for reasons both reasonable and not.  His time in Icefia lead to his death and the deaths of those that fought beside him.  This repeated itself time and again.

He would go back to Borkondof and find a good life as chief of a small village, and then it was leveled and he was killed during the days of Harrl's Rage when his legacy was stolen.  In Yellowia, he had a new life as a refugee but was convinced to join in on the attack against the Yellowian governor from Iott leading to the Day the Magic was Broken, where he again died.  Next, he was in the Great Forest as part of Razk's Raiders.  The raiders were successful, but other than Razk, the casualty rate was high.  On the Great Plateau, he was paid well to clear squatters off of settled land.  He met with an equally angry human and his massive hammer.  In Lowlas, where the tendrils of Iott did not reach, he rested for a bit.  But the call to action was strong in his blood and he could not rest long.  He traipsed through the swamps, hunting with lizardfolk who were keen to have a bugbear's skills.  Again, he was killed by the great serpents of Izhudan.  When the plagues came, he ignored them, shouting his immunity.  He died from three of them.

Zalthor's constant trips between life and death confused him at first but he grew so used to it that in his mind he became convinced that he was not dying.  His power was so great that he could not be killed.  A gremlin swami told him that only a great and rare weapon could kill him forever, one meant to kill only those like him.  Amused, greatly scarred, confident beyond reason, Zalthor traveled south to a new city that could experience his magnificence.

This place called Ermaneo, labeled by some as the birthplace of new deities, seemed a goof place for one such as himself.  There, he set about convincing everyone of his divinity.  For his efforts, he was given meals and lodging.  He assumed these people to be his worshippers giving him offerings, in truth, they were taking pity on the insane.  One night, a fierce lightning storm erupted.  For Zalthor, this meant that his time of ascension was at hand...

Sounds more like the family pet ferret who inconceivably gets into places he shouldn't, as an homage to the person who got the closest ever to stealing from him.

Koth Orcsmith (Hero, Palumbton)

By the time he had reached 25 years old, Koth had accomplished quite a lot in his homeland of Barnstenagor.  Freeing North Palumbton from the control of Palumbton, putting the dukes of Barnstenagor on notice, defeating the faithful of Sutyr in the volcano, and forming a nescient republic among the cities and towns of the area.  Having accomplished so much, Koth sought to make sure his efforts would outlive him and looked for other to fill his shoes and become the leaders of a republic that he was not.

He had first picked Kayla to lead, and although she was inspiring and well liked, she proved not to have the organizational skills required.  After many conversation and as much research as can be done in far off Barnstenagor, Koth decided to take a different path, one that might be better suited.  His models had been the Kingdom of Icefia and Yellowia, but perhaps what was better here was a looser organization.  Historians told him of two such entities, the Icefian Confederacy and the Plateau before the Tinkocracy.  Using those as ideas, he gathered the leaders of Barnstenagor at the Counsel of 790.  It took a year, but they leaders agreed on the format.  The Republic of Barnstenagor was officially born.

Several years later, as things moved smoothly thanks to Koth's shadow, Iott came knocking.  Koth readied for confrontation, sent messengers to the towns, and prepared for a great showdown.  It never came.  Iott left as soon as they had arrived, promising to one day return.  Some believed Koth scared them away, others that there was simply nothing of worth to the Iottians, but either way, they left and never returned.

Blessing Gnarion, Koth went along happy with the progress.  The event only helped maintain him as a figure of strength and one who kept the republic together.  There were many debates arguments and scuffles.  Several plots and plans.   But year after year, Koth stood tall and the sense that the republic was there to stay grew stronger.  When asked, Koth did join friends beyond the lands to fight some tyrant, but it was rare.  His connection to the land grew stronger with each year.  He aged faster the most.  He slowed.  He grew tired.  But he was content.

In 802, Sutyr betrayed the Counsil.  Koth saw this as reason to end all semblance of Sutyr with sight of Barnstenagor.  Finding common ground with Lench, the two crusadered for an area a hundred miles in all directions from the edges of the land.  Joined by Junior the Plainsrunner of Tommimao, Evan the Rabbit Guard, Henry the Nightengale, and Heath the Grovetender; the assembled clerics spent two years cleansing the area of any sign of Sutyr.  So complete was their effort, that no faithful of the now cultist ever stepped into their lands again.

The port of North Liberty became busier.  Ships sought to avoid the busy ports in the plague years.  With few ports of entry, the republic kept many of them out of the lands.  Those plague years strengthened the republic further.  Koth laughed at the 20 year anniversary when once bitter rivals joked as the misfortune of other lands.  It wasn't the best reason to bond, but when followers of Chaos, Dresta, Arsuranyodel, Gnarion and Habastly can share of meal and laugh, something must be right.

The defeat of Kallark brought a smile to Koth's face.  Palumbton had not face as hard times as many other lands, but still, a world without Kallark was less a threat than one with him.  Later that year, something more unexpected occurred.  Kasin, the enforcer of Allinvere, arrived to meet with Koth.  He reported that Lench was dead.  More shocking, the Avatar of Chaos had been defeated in a spell duel.  Kasin was now Duke, although it was not he that defeated Lench.  A new power rose, one that Kasin now followed, and its name is Re'Alpf.

Thankfully, Kasin changed little and this new power behind Allinvere did not make any moves.  Koth breathed a sign of relief.  The republic had now survived two significant changes in leaders, as the long time warlord of the cities of Kodollo’s Drain, Coineart, had died the year before.  It gave hope for the republic's survival.  Kayla had proved a capable leader when meetings were not strict on their format and the constitution of the republic remained straightforward.  Izza of Baegendown had taken over a militia organizer.  Carl from Hosterlee was the chairgnome in charge of leading meetings.  All was well.

In 815, word came to Koth of a mission he could not ignore.  A mission that even old orcish Koth must attend.  He collected his armor and weapons which had not seen serious use in five years.  He spent a week with his family, sensing it could be his last.  Then he went to see his oldest friend Malek.

To whom it may concern:

Information researched near Palumpton by historians was suspect,
  - The Counsel of Barnstenagor was 790.. not 890 as stated in papers found in Palumbton.
  - Previous information collected in Icefea had Sutyr's betrayal in 803, (802 here) This might be more correct, and a real find?

I fixed the 890, that was a typo not a clue.

It happened on the last day of the year, when it was one year in some placs and the next in other due to time zones?

Have we encountered the name Re'Alpf before? I don't recognize it and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to.

At the end of this, I would be curious to hear the fan theories everyone had.  But not until I'm done.

I don’t either but I’ve missed so much over the last few years. Certainly less villainous sounding than Lench.

Well, I will say we've encountered him before, at least that's my theory.   You'll *SMH when you realize who.

Aesculos “Ajax” Thanos (Whitesword, various)

After the battle in Portet, Ajax remained for several weeks trying to hunt the more powerful
undead, but with little success.  With the city largely abandoned, and the presence of so many knights and clerics, most of the powerful undead dispersed into the wilderness.  Ajax then headed north to probe Greysnows and assess the Strife Lands.  After weeks of
investigation, and several battles against fiends and undead, the party withdrew to the Guardian Vale.  After a brief rest, Ajax spent the next two years hunting undead and searching for Nilas’Anor’s servants in western Icefia.  With no sign of Uscis or Marius, and the undead avoiding him, Ajax felt a call to return to the Main Continent.  Rather than Gate, as time on the upper planes assert a strong pull on him, he rode the breadth of Icefia, stopping in the Vale, Colonye and Castle Gemblade.

The king Arion sought to bestow a knighthood on him, but Ajax declined, feeling it would be a breach of his vows.  He requested instead that a watchtower be consecrated to Stasis on the northern border of the Protectorate.  Arion, who is less tradition bound than his predecessors, bestowed the title of Knight-In-Merit on him anyway.  The Shining Tower is now the first line of defense against the evil in the north.  After a term counseling initiates at the paladin school, and a month in prayer at the High Temple of Stasis, Ajax returned to Southgate in Yellowia; where his quests began years earlier, seeking Gregory Steelblade and Hanai Winterstar.

Ajax found Southgate little changed from his visit years earlier. The hardy folk of the south went about their business with little care for the political scheming of the nobles.  Gregory and Hanai, now the parents of three, were content to protect the people of the south.
Hanai had fought at Castle Gemblade and Portet, but now accepted Yellowia as her home.  Ajax was frustrated by what he found, as he thought Gregory had been the first just ruler revealed to him by Stasis.  Still, unless Stasis directed him to shake them from their contentment, he had no reason to remain.  With a deep uneasiness, Ajax bid farewell to his fellow paladins and rode north.

What he found only further deepened his concerns.  The people of the Kingdom fared no better than when he left.  Though the Kingdom appeared more ready for the Mulataven, or the hordes of Borkondorf, Ajax could tell the common folk bore no love for their leaders and could easily have their spirit broken by a new war.  Resolved to help as best he could Ajax rode north, stopping in towns and villages to preach, heal and mediate disputes.  Along the way the signs and talk of Iott’s ascendance were common.  Though it concerned him, Ajax felt no call to take action.  Eventually he reached the small town where he had posted his letter of challenge to the government years earlier.  The townsfolk looked on in shock as the orc who had left decades ago and become a figure of legend, now returned to fulfill his promise.

After spending time in northern Yellowia, and incredibly frustrated that he cannot get satisfaction for the long unanswered slander, Ajax wrestles with the idea of riding to Saint Lawrence.  His time in Norhern Yellowia is one of the calmest of his life.  The people enjoy his presence.  As the king and the nobles battle of Iott's so called control of Yellowia, Ajax is able to keep one small section of the kingdom free from trouble.  On several occasions, the governor of Yellowia, a native by birth but having long lived in Iott before his return, sent warning to Ajax not to interfere with the nation.  Ajax dissmissed the warnings, but equally had no interest in affairs of state.  He only waited and hoped Stasis would direct him to a new ruler.

Word reaches him that Gregory and Hanai are seeking him and implore him to return to Southgate. Knowing they would not make such a request lightly, Ajax opens a Gate and travels to reach them quickly and safely.  Upon arriving he is surprised to find the Steelblade estate is on guard. Gregory receives him alone. “Word has reached us of a new threat. Assassins are at work, not only are they targeting paladins but they are killing the children of paladins and feyalin. They struck in the jungle and slew the daughter of Jaelata’linoan, the Feyalin of Treetop. They struck in Icefia against William Summerlight’s family but were not successful. Esetia of Magenthia, the Feyalin of Falan has not been seen for months. Escalon has ordered that no paladin associated with the Temple may travel alone. We cannot make the journey to Icefia or Pacyr but I beseech you to take Hanai and our children to Mydyr. In the summer of 795 Ajax and Hanai travel to Pacyr with her children and a small number of squires.

Knowing that taking small children into the upper planes could have long term consequences, Ajax and Hanai set out on the road to Pacyr with her children and a small number of squires. The road was long and not without challenges. Monsters, including bands of giants, had no concept or care for Ajax and Hanai’s reputation. They took the road through the Jungle in the hope that they could learn something of the assassins, but in his grief Jaelata’linoan had departed to seek revenge. Despite their mission to see the children to safety, the paladins could not set aside their vows, and along the way, particularly as they drew closer to the border of Hertopowlis, they defeated many who sought to exploit the chaos following the Day of Broken Magic. Still there was no sign of the agents of the dark powers. Their trip took them through Loahk, a place Ajax had never gone through before.  He was shocked to see the land of hundreds of kingdoms was thriving.  While poor in magic, they appeared better organized they he had been lead to believe.  He also heard talk of the leader, above the kings, Lord of the Plateau.  Had it not been for his mission, he would have stayed.  Just before reaching Hertoplowis, they heard word of the orcish crusade heading for Iott.  It would come this way soon.  Again, Ajax stayed the course despite the interest.  They passed through Hertopowlis with less difficulty than usual as the country was more concerned with Iott.

Upon reaching Pacyr, they learned that the assassins had already struck there. Aegis Malconroy was missing and many prominent knights and paladins had been slain, along with their families. Most believed the assassins were fiends, or vampires taking revenge for their long imprisonment in Portet, but Elizabeth Toppin, Stasis’ mightiest cleric and Guardian, was certain that they were neither. The orphans of the slain were given to the care of the High Temple of Hemator or the Radiant Shield of Stasis. With the family safely delivered, Ajax returned to Southgate via a Gate.

Rubius (Part 2)

Located in the fertile lands of southern Icefia, within trading distance of all the major cities of the eastern half of the country, but far from the conflicts in the north and the west, life in Havenhollow was idyllic by Halfling standards.  Even during the years where Iott struck directly against Icefia, Havenhollow was spared.  During the plague years, the mostly homogeneous Halfling community, with a higher ratio of shrines than many other towns, suffered less than most of their neighbors; though central Icefia on the whole was more fortunate than much of the rest of the world. The successful farmers and ranchers of the community provided food for much of the eastern half of the Kingdom as well.  King Oliver, and later the High King, visited the community to thank them for their contributions to the Kingdom and recognize Rubius’ leadership.

Still, life was not completely without worry.  Word of the terrible events around the world reached the community and from time-to-time Knights and Guardians would visit to check on Rubius and his family.  Iott struck directly against Icefia several times and the forces of Greysnows attacked in the north.  However, it was not warring nations or the dark powers that would bring sorrow to Havenhollow, rather something far older: strife between religions and cults.  Stories of the Halfling Heroes of Icefia had inspired those that founded the community and by 797 large shrines to the ancient halfling powers of Celestia and Hemator stood alongside the shrines of Habastly and Treetop.  Kerkley and Benlin would visit often, and though they did not actively seek to convert the residents, some were inspired by their example.  Among the halflings there was little conflict; those that followed the cult powers were seen as harmless at worst.  But word spread of the place where cultists and the true faithful lived in peace.
