Title: Update
Post by: whitesword on July 26, 2020, 10:36:10 PM
Part 1

We last left the constables at the Severing. The winter following the Severing in Portet was difficult for both residents and those deployed to the city. News, and rumor, of the events inside the Temple swept through the city and surrounding towns. The elves long had an ambivalent relationship with Falan’s church and the claims that this mysterious event had “cured” Falan of his taint were met with suspicion.

Not long after, Lord Arishimoto departed and was replaced as governor by a Rose elf, High General Amana Rosetree. Her military approach to matters combined with her heritage is well received by all but the most hard line Scaled Elves and the growing contingent of foreign “entrepreneurs”.

In light of the stressful and sometimes hazardous nature of the assignment, constables are given extended periods of leave away from the city throughout 787 and 788.  In addition all are awarded hazard pay.

During your time in the city a sense of normalcy, or at least somewhat predictable routine, develops. The end of the blockade allowed trade to resume, but those that had traded with the Scaled Nation are not the ones that take advantage of the new opportunity.  By late 787 it is clear that are several groups with conflicting and overlapping interests at work in the city. Most prominent among them are the Redleafs but there are Horarians, Islanders and Layraedians as well. Not all are criminals, at least not in the professional sense, but their disagreements led to a cycle of reprisals.

While the constables are responsible for policing the city, they are aware that the Knights and the marines have had to contest with spies and infiltrators from the north.

On top of all of this the winters are harsh even by Icefian standards in both 87 and 88.

Early in 788 Sgt. Windbourne is promoted and transferred to Cape Tolya. He is sorry to leave you and welcomes any of you to join him when you are released from this assignment. You give him as good a send off as you can manage. Bryvis is promoted, unexpectedly to replace him.

In the ninth month of 788, as the winter looms, the entire cohort that was assigned to Portet with you is assembled at the temple of Stasis. High Constable Caladrian addresses you as a group and then thanks all of you individually. You are all given a month of paid leave and then returned to your previous duty station. You are directed to report for duty in Phiam on the first day of the 11th month.

Yes with a 10% bonus as you weren’t really idle.

In that down time, Robert looks for gloves that provide a minor increase to Dexterity.

Does anyone have any recollection of Robert having an assistant / sidekick?   I should have had one as part of my class, but perhaps he didn't' come in story line yet.

I think Tannik was going to be your sidekick?

Thanks for posting. I forgot to say everyone should post what you do with your various leave. Realistically you can go to Fort Pinceer or Cape Tolya for your periods of leave while still assigned to Portet. You can go anywhere in Icefia during the break before you report to Phiam.

Also, there will be a second period of XP so might as well hold off.

You’ve all accumulated about 2500gc just in pay and assume another 1500 in items worth trading.

Robert sees if there is a government trading post or some way that he doesn't have to spend all that to get his gloves.

There’s no formal trading post but the high temple of Tyrogatore in Cape Tolya will give you a +2 set of gloves for four weeks of training serving as an instructor to young practitioners.

Is that payment for the training?

What would Gneetagh have to do in order to score a +6 belt or gauntlets of strength?  A lot can be accomplished in 26 months.  I can train new recruits, I can teach languages, and I'm a pretty good weapon smith.

An item that powerful is too uncommon to be bartered for. You could get a few +2 items if you spent all your leave (which totals about 4 months including the month at the end).

What if I used all my leave and supplemented the rest with gold?

A +6 belt has a creation price of 36000 and would sell for far more. So that’s a no.

Uleric will see if he can find a Stormfire Ring (Casts Faerie fire 5x a day deals 1d6 lightning damage to affected foes) add Merciful and Shocking to his bow (each are only +1 enchantments)

Retail is 36k, creation cost is less, but no matter.  How about a +4?

Your gold + half your XP (representing you’ve done nothing but make weapons for constables and marines.)

Nice.  I thank him for the belt and make him a commemorative sword in honor of his service.

Well that is surprising. Bryvis is grateful for the opportunity and humbled by the responsibility. Before accepting, he sits down with the rest of the squad individually to make sure there’s no strife caused on the team by his advancement.

Gneetagh is okay with it.

Uleric has no issues with the promotion

Part 2:

You return to the cold, wet, early winter typical in Phiam. On your first day Brentan and Udarin greet you as a group to welcome you back. They ask you about your experiences. Both of them have been away from the city at various points, Brentan with the Ministry of Security and Udarin on sensitive assignments. After Brentan departs Udarin continues the briefing.

“Since the end of the war the city has seen an increase in crime. Some is due to unemployed soldiers and sailors; some an influx of ships and commercial sailors. I also suspect that one or more organized criminal groups are seeking to fill the void left by the Onice’s fall.  Frankly, you are one of the most experienced squads in the city and your reviews from the supervisors in Portet, some colorful language from Chartok aside, are excellent. For now I’ll assign you to the market station.”

The last month of 788 and the first four months of 789 are uneventful. The winter is harsh but relatively quiet. As spring arrives crime rapidly increases. Most of it is minor but by the Day of Light all of the constables in the city are working extra shifts.

As the summer continues you receive a message from Cobus (which includes a welcome back) that members of both the Redleaf and Sal’ean groups have established interests in the city.  By the end of the summer many of the most senior constables remark that it feels like the Phiam of their earliest days on the job.

The fall brings the usual flurry of ships  arriving and leaving dock as quickly as possible to try to get in one more crossing before the winter. Petty crime and fighting declines as many captains only allow their crew a single day of leave. This in turn leads to an increase of reports of missing sailors who don’t return to their ships in time.

The winter is again harsh and Brentan departs for the last month of 789 and the first two of 790. You quickly learn that Udarin intensely dislikes being the acting First Deputy and you are called upon to take over several serious cases. Mostly they are  high value burglary cases, perpetrated by professional crews. You solve most of them and by the end of the year are convinced that one of the criminal groups is hiring them.

Spring of 790 brings another increase in crime, this time with more violence between rival groups. While you still get assigned to patrol near the end of the second month, just before Brentan returns, Udarin assigns you to headquarters and brings you in for a briefing.

“Over the last few months I have noticed a pattern in the reports of sailors not returning to their ships. I will assemble my notes for you. In the meantime I have assigned you here because we have been briefed by the High Constable that his Majesty and the ministers are concerned that agents of one or more of the organized crime groups may be working for enemies of the Kingdom.”

We will start on the first day of the 3rd  month (roughly the day the other group left for the Plateau). Add an additional 15 months of experience with the same bonus.

Robert is nearing is 31st birthday and you see grey is his hair, especially in his newly grown thin beard.

At some point in the intervening years, you were all inviting to his wedding, details later.
