Title: The Best Augury Ever
Post by: Asinjin on December 03, 2014, 08:29:59 AM
We didn't get xp from the previous session (shark fight), which we rested after.

We can list our preparations for the load dark road.

"Should we contact Roland?" asks Kerkly.

Asinjin has put up a Telepathic Bond that covers: Parker, Tomas, Ari, Astrek, Robin, and Shaar

Benlin has put up the Interplanar Telepathic Bond that covers: Aezir, Benlin, Rubius, Ari, and Kerkly

A list of the items from the two assassins so that we know what Cydny has would be good.

Kerkly puts a Protection Charm on everyone (that's ten of them), +15 on your next save.  Lasts for hours.

He asks, "Cydny, what is cut off from the temple?  What kind of magic divination and communication can get out?"

Yes, I know you said they were generally minor, but since we have time to flesh them out now.

The ones from the ambush are not minor. The ones from the five today are. I'll post a list.

Kerkly asks, "Is there anyone inside you can trust?"

No and I don't know who we will find. When I first was expelled they did something to me that left me very confused. I wandered the streets for a week until a group of women took me in. We then met the tritons who took me to their city. They dispelled the enchantment and I demanded to be returned to the temple.  When I returned I was admitted but immediately silenced and taken to a mummification chamber where Balthazar and the High Cleric performed the curse upon me and the other woman.

Kerkly, "Why go through all that trouble?  Not to be insensitive, but couldn't they have just killed you?"

"Isn't her uncle a high ranking member of the Guardians?  If she were killed, there is a chance, however remote, that the Guardians would somehow find out.  And, trying to bring her killer to justice, might stumble upon their plan.  By doing things this way, they still ran the risk of being found out, as is evidenced by our eminent foray, but not until it was almost to late. Or, it could be that not-Balthazar and the High Cleric cast an Augury and asked whether killing her was a good move and got a resounding 'No'."

Kerkly asks her, "What can we expect in the way of clerics and resistance?  Will any be willing to talk with us?  Are there any protections the temple offers to the clerics and faithful inside?  Will we be able to contact our deities in Falan's temple?"

That last one may be answered by a religion check (total check roll 25).

"I expect they will move to stop us as soon as we are detected. I don't think anyone present inside will be opposed to the plan or ignorant of it for that matter.

I don't know how many clerics and other followers from other temples may be present.

The entire temple is invisibility purged and there are numerous spell traps for undead and fiends but none for mortals. The passage brings us in behind the two golems that protect the main entrance but the high cleric can call them and the pair that protect the inner forum. It would take several minutes for either pair to arrive if we are stopped soon after exiting the passage.  We will most likely have to deal with the pair at the inner forum if that is where the ritual is taking place."

Are there any sympathizers to our cause inside the temple, either working as informants for other goodly deities or simply opposed to the thought of this severing ritual?  Anyone that may be able to provide a diversion as we infiltrate the alter chamber?

(part two of response to Kerkley): I have no reason to think you won't be able to contact your power. (Then seeing Kerkley's symbol) Is your power one followed by the Guardians? If so you should be fine. If not I have no idea.

As for special protections for followers I don't think so but the Temple's armory of magic swords is the greatest in the world so if the guards have been armed they could have very potent weapons.

"Also, while I'm thinking about it, Cyn, do you have aNY further details about this 'Severing'?  I mean, is it strictly metaphorical in that they are going to sever ties to Falan and give their worship to some other being? Or do they need to physically sever something from an avatar of Falan. Because, although I have fought and destroyed avatars before, having the god of the undead pissed at me is pretty low on my to-do list.  And even being friends with his niece or granddaughter or whatever she is isn't likely to asuage a gods anger if you destroy his avatar."

Items:

From the more powerful assassins: 1 +2 Short Sword of Deady Precision, 1 +2 Short Sword of Paralyzing, 14 +1 (permanent) shuriken of venom, one set of boots of speed, one set of boots of climbing and leaping, two sets of +6 bracers of armor, two rings of protection +3,  two belts of resistance +3, one amulet of second chances, one amulet of life drinking.

Each also had the following psionic items: chameleon skins +20. These can only be used with no armor or psionic armor.  A ring of improved inertial armor +6. One of them had a circlet (crown) of the beast and the other had a third eye of concealment.

"A fine idea my friend.  If memory serves, I do believe Roland said we could call on him if need be.  I'm sure he'll be interested in recovering his sword.  By the way, does anyone know exactly what an amulet of second chances does?  That sounds like something that may prove useful for Cydney considering her recent run in with psionic forces.  It may also be beneficial if someone could make us all faster in case our undead protection fails us and we need to make a hasty retreat."

Parker pipes up, "  I can make most of us faster.  Kerkley or Benlan will have to take care of the rest."

Parker looks through the items and takes one of the Chameleon skins and hands it to Robyn and takes the other for himself.  "I doubt that the rest of you, Rubius excepted, could make use of these. Robyn can make use of a couple of the rings, a belt, and a pair of boots.

Parker uses his Bard-Like Knowledge ability to see if he can figure out what the amulet(s)(1d20+7 :: 8+7 = 15 and 1d20+7 :: 14+7 = 21, headband (1d20+7 :: 18+7 = 25), and crown (1d20+7 :: 18+7 = 25) do

I'll alert the marines that we are going into the Temple and request a few squads to cover the entrance and the black field should a massive undead-horde spill into the streets.

I will also inform the First Deputy of the false Balthazar and our plans to enter the Temple. You know where to look if you don't hear back from me.

Asinjin says, "Might it be helpful to the mission to call in Roland?  I can Send him."
Yes.

Envenoming sheath/weapons and the life-drinking amulet will be destroyed. Guardians can probably do it.

Will a chameleon skin fit Astrek?

As Parker is perusing his spellbook, "Do we have any protections against the Mind Flayers psionic abilities available to us?"

Okay. I'll scribble that down on a piece of paper, put it in a sealed envelope on my desk, and instruct one of the acolytes to deliver it to the constable station the day after tomorrow unless otherwise instructed.

So the last 2 times we tried to infiltrate a well fortified structure we faced a dispelling wall. Both times it proved challenging for some of us to pass. Let's plan ahead this time. Anyone have any thoughts on how to deal with the one we will undoubtedly encounter today?

"Not to sound as if we know what we are doing, but, Cyndy, do you happen to know the floor plan of the temple?  Where does the secret door bring us out inside?  Where is the largest gathering place in there?"

"Also, Ari, it occurs to me that, while we are making our move here, it might behoove us to notify our friend, the proprietor of Good Gear Good Luck, and make him aware of what is about to happen.  There might be something He or someone he knows can do on the other end of things."

Parker grabs the shuriken and puts them in a pouch. He also has his Mace (Rod of Alertness) on one hip, Winder in its holster at the small of his back, Bastard Sword in its sheath opposite the mace, and his Holy Sword strapped to his back.  He also has a knife in either boot and two in his vest.

Cydney says: "Of course.  The temple is divided into three parts. The front is for worship and houses what you might call a museum. The middle part houses the places of learning. That is where we are going. The tunnel will bring us up into a large circular room with two obvious exits, north and south and six alcoves, so one opening for each point on the wheel of swords. We will emerge from the southwest point and take the northern corridor.  Directly ahead lies the great auditorium. There is a long hallway right and left. The forges lie to the right and the laboratories to the left.  I suspect the ceremony will be held in the auditorium or the largest laboratory."

"Putting them somewhere safe for the time being.  We don't want anyone getting hurt right before our big adventure, do we?  On my honor, they will be destroyed with the rest of the items.  However, We have had enemies sneak right into our midst and use items against us that we thought we had secured.  I will not have that happen again.  It may take a while (Parker stabs Thaddeus with the golden needle), but i learn from our mistakes."

Roland says: That is very generous of you master cleric. The short sword is of no use to me. The chameleon skin and one of the psionic rings would be most helpful. I can also use those shuriken if the professor cannot.

OC: I realize I didn't make this clear in case you want to reconsider: the chameleon skin won't function with anything that grants you an armor bonus, unless it's psionic. Including Bracers, mundane, magical armor and spells.

I will go with you. I only ask that if it is possible we take Malfesseus alive. The return of my family codex means more to me than the sword or any of my other possessions.

Have you tried using magic to locate your codex. Asinjin is quite the grumpy talented diviner.

Kerkly asks, "How does a ring of inertial armor work?"

Roland says: like a Mage armor spell.

Roland takes off his black gye and as he allows the chameleon skin to envelop him you can see he has a tattoo of a couatl that covers most of his back.

Upon hearing that, Asinjin chimes in, "I am reminded that Falan is the lord of swords.  Be wary for enchantments that may take control of your blades while in the temple.  If possible, use other weapons."
Ari gives a concerned look to his primary weapon (a sword), his offhand weapon (a sword), and his backup weapon (also a sword). He then withdraws a naginata from his bag of holding. "This probably doesn't qualify as a sword, right? Too bad it's not magical...perhaps the high cleric might be able to temporarily enchant it..."

Ari also grabs 2 of those +1 daggers from the assassins as backups to my backups.

I'll put a peace bond on my backup shortsword, and strap the naginata to Astrek's saddle. I'm assuming the temple and black field entrance are big enough to accommodate a large celestial dire badger.

Parker holds his hands up in a "hey, i don't know what you're talking about" pose and uses one hand to point to Roland, who now has the shuriken

Against living opponents most will use necromantic spells.

The tunnel is large enough as is the outside entrance.  The interior door may require you to remove his saddle.
