Title: Ranger combat styles
Post by: Hero on April 23, 2023, 09:26:59 PM
So I recently stumbled on the Pathfinder ranger and noticed that there are many different options for combat style in PF compared to the 2 available in 3.5.

Here’s the link:
 https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/ranger/ranger-combat-styles/ (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/ranger/ranger-combat-styles/)

I really like the idea of adding some additional combat style options. We don’t need as many options as PF, but some others beyond the basic TWF and archery paths would be flavorful. In particular, I think we could use options for mounted combat (for Yellowian rangers), natural attacks (for more savage races with natural attacks), and thrown weapons (spears are ancient hunting weapons).

Thoughts?

I like the idea of sprucing up Rangers.

I like it - Pathfinder stuff seems pretty sweet.  It's a slippery slop

I think a few of those could be added.  Their list is too large.

Suggest we add combat style options for Mounted, Natural, and Thrown attacks.

Mounted
2nd: Ride-by Attack (https://dndtools.net/feats/players-handbook-v35--6/ride-by-attack--2455/)
6th: Spirited Charge (https://dndtools.net/feats/players-handbook-v35--6/spirited-charge--2733/)
11th: Improved Ride-by Attack (Habololy Yellowia book)

Natural
2nd: Improved Natural Attack (https://dndtools.net/feats/monster-manual-v35--5/improved-natural-attack--1533/)
6th: Rapidstrike (https://dndtools.net/feats/draconomicon--92/rapidstrike--3227/)
11th: Improved Rapidstrike (https://dndtools.net/feats/draconomicon--92/improved-rapidstrike--3228/)

Thrown
2nd: Brutal Throw (https://dndtools.net/feats/complete-adventurer--54/brutal-throw--278/)
6th: Power Throw (https://dndtools.net/feats/complete-adventurer--54/power-throw--3329/)
11th: Hurling Charge (https://dndtools.net/feats/miniatures-handbook--75/hurling-charge--3488/)

If we add the two-handed weapon which was something I suggested before playing my giant.  I would love to remake the giant with two-handed style.  It would make it easier to become more of a ranger and dwarf crusher instead of the just the 1 ranger level I have now.

I like these additions and would like to suggest non-combat based Rangers as well.  I haven't thought too deeply into it yet, but the concept would be skill based instead of combat, such as a tracker who maybe gets extended tracking skills and the "scent" natural ability, maybe Darkvision too.  Or perhaps an animal handler who gets Skill Focus (Handle Animal), a list of skill tricks to add to their animal companion, and maybe Charm Animal (1st level Ranger spell) as an innate ability kind of like turning attempts or even at will like Detect Evil for a Paladin.  Just some thoughts, but like I said, I'd need to put some time into exactly what skills/feats/abilities would belong to "Tracker" and Animal Handler."

I considered that, but didn’t do it because 2 handed weapons don’t seem very rangery to me. The others proposed involve animals, hunting weapons, and bestial races, all of which seem appropriate for a ranger.

Should those be prestige classes?

Possibly, or maybe additional upgrades to the Mundane Ranger.

I generally agree but for the larger races it seems like it would work  I can't see a human or an elf with two handed but wielding a weapon in each hand does seem very orgrish or giant-like to me so I think 2 handed would fit better.

Thinking about this more and I could see double-handed weapon style being thematic for a medium sized lumberjack chopping down trees with an axe. That’s kind of rangerish.

Double-handed
2nd: ?
6th: ?
11th: ?

If we add this, I am not a fan, the abilities would not be damage related.  These would not be massive damage specialists.

Are these approved for use? Odde is picking up 2nd level in Ranger and I need to pick a path.

Might I also suggest an alternate path for large Rangers.

Thrown
2nd: Brutal Throw
6th: Rock Hurling https://www.dndtools.org/feats/races-of-stone--82/rock-hurling--2467/ (https://www.dndtools.org/feats/races-of-stone--82/rock-hurling--2467/)

Neat idea. Limited applications though, so maybe not broad enough for a stand alone style. I think the other thrown weapon style (brutal throw/power throw/hurling charge) would also work for chucking rocks, assuming you could pick up rock throwing ability/feat elsewhere.
