Do the Minataurs seem to be affected by the duel in any way?

They do not appear to know its going on, even though it is a mere 100 feet away from them.

Are we affected other than simply being bystanders?

Asinjin:
No, you can try to effect the battle if you want.  They appear to be casting four or five spells a round, so fast you can't tell what they are (Luigi has a chance to tell).
