A Long Hot Summer
« on: October 27, 2017, 12:01:06 PM »
We will be picking up the war after the summer has passed, which will be about six months after the battle at the outpost.

Vor'Ruk will have made it back to the empire and delivered his report but not yet have returned to the rest of you in the forest.

Grant has returned with more survivors of the outpost attack (he reaches you on the march south a week or so after you left).  Grant, for bonus xp, post a recount of what happened to you and those that remained at the outpost after the others left.  Vor'Ruk will not hear this story, as he is gone, but the rest will hear it.

Saladien will spend most of the summer educating your allies about weathersinging and working on ways to counter the efforts of the others.

Haas and Valizar will be spending much of that time going to Jaswap and Baenrl and other places where are needed to inspire and convince.

Ash is sent on a diplomatic mission.

Grant's heroic efforts only add to his renown and the level of respect given to him in the forest.  He remains with Martin and Ellic as a show of strength and a symbol of the righteousness of the cause.

More details on all to come in the next week before we start, but start posting questions.

I find this amusing.  I hope it's a mission to the Elven Kingdom.

Grant's recounting:

From the battlement walls, Grant, the Lord Commander, and the remaining soldiers, watch Haas and the others leave in silence.  Only after they are out of sight for several minutes, do those remaining stir themselves to prepare their defenses.  Mud balls continuously rain down on the Outpost for what seem like hours.  Then the attack comes.

When the battle begins, it starts with a cacophony of croaks.  The defenders say that lesser soldiers would be shaken by the noise, but they are not.  You all rush to the defenses and wait, taking cover from the barrage of mud balls, which more annoy than hurt.  The assault goes for an hour.  Mud, occasional javelin volleys, and several sneak assaults by a hundred come and go.  Nothing makes a major impact on the outpost, but it does its job of keeping the defenders working not resting.  Then the croaking stops.  Moments later, a roar is heard right over the wall.  The mighty wyrm rises over the wall, looking healed and not undead.

Grant can not believe the good fortune Tyrogatore has given him.  The chance to fight this mighty wyrm again.  Grant rushes out to meet it head on.  Grant uses all of his skills and lays into the beast with all of his might.  Grant delivers several mighty blows, but in so doing, receives some grievous wounds himself.  Grant is grappled by the beast several times and, while he rallies the courage of the defenders, it takes direct intervention from the Lord Commander for Grant to escape the wyrms clutches.  Grant beats a hasty retreat to the outpost wall to recover from his wounds.  As soon as he does the wyrm casts its gaze upon him.  Grant succumbs to the mental domination of the wyrm and is taken out of the fight.

An indeterminate amount of time later, Grant is freed from the mental grip of the wyrm by a mighty slap in the face from the Lord Commander.  The Lord Commander tells grant that the beast has withdrawn from the field, likely fearing to die another time.  Most of those remaining are hurt to one degree or another and the morale within the outpost is grim.  The Lord Commander discusses the use of the Outpost’s ‘Final Measure’.  This is the final defense of the outpost, from within the vault, the Lord commander can trigger an explosion that will destroy the vault and everything in it, as well as the Outpost, and everything within 500 paces of it.

After some discussion, Grant says he will take the remaining 30 men into custody and escort them to Fort Grey Litchen, to be judged.  5 minutes later, the Lord Commander and Quartermaster give Grant several items they deem too necessary to the fight on the line to be destroyed.  Grant and the rest of the men then leave. Only the Lord Commander and the Quartermaster Greg are left behind in the outpost to enact the ‘Final Measure’.

Grant and the rest of the 30 soldiers quickly move down the path, away from the boiled line.  Not long after, from behind them, a tremendous explosion can be heard, and then felt.  The soldiers stop for a moment as the enormity of these events sink in.  The men know that beyond the walls of Outpost 8 they are branded traitors.  They know that their time ahead will not be easy.  But, they have faith in their Lord Commander and in Grant.  With hearts heavy, they continue their trek.  As they walk, the soldiers stand straighter, their brows furrow in grim determination, and a slow seething anger builds within them.  To a man, they silently vow vengeance for their fallen comrades and death to all wugs and their allies…

After Grant and the remnant reach the rest of you, the story is told and there are many cries for vengeance and heart felt toasts to the dead.

It takes the group 18 days to reach Balinhost.  The walk is long because there are so many of you and you mus avoid a variety of places since you are somewhat behind enemy lines.

Among many other things that happen once you reach Balinhost, you find out that the Lord Commander and the few that stayed with him are being held captive at Outpost 7.

As a reminder, here are some of the important players in the campaign:

Ellic Dofelostate - Defacto leader of the coalition of the forest.  A halfling strategist from the Fellos Estate, descendant of great halfling strategists for centuries.

Martin Bradtree - Commander of the forces of Balinhost.  A warrior of great skill that competed at a high level in the last Suian.  He is a Fironi.  He shares command of the coailition.

Tali - Sakor'akai wizard formerly of the Fellos Estate.  Head wizard of the coalition.  He is not seen as often in Balinhost and is not a visable to vocal leader.

Liam Oakenry - Halfling Lord Commander of Outpost 8 that mutinied against the Woodduke.  He is now in prison at Outpost 7.

Fauns Bowland - the current prime minister of Balinhost.  He has not been in the position long.

Akrak - Warlord of the gnolls of Garlaccal.

Nabil - new Sultan of the fire giants of Baenrl who is a follower of Tyrogatore.  Upon his decree, the fire giants reached an agreement with the coalition.

I thought he was a Tyrogatore faithful?

Other names:

Skaeshin - the fey war leader that has been recently called back into the world.  You encountered him first at Cheadsolas with his fey troll who Vor'Ruk slaughtered.

Taemus Bewall - the last Wooduke

Giovanni Scalefriend - the voice of Scalehome, ambassador of Greenfellow.

This joke didn't go over like I hoped...Doesn't Ash have Elves as his favored enemy?  Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

All I know is Stonmus, his Elemental Giants, and his curb-stomped daughter.  He took my foot.  Tyrogatorian justice will rein down on him some day for his transgressions against our faith.

Oh, and The Devourer.  He ate my arm.  He will also pay for his crimes.

You are correct, Ash hates elves.  I didn't realize it was a joke, that was a good actual guess as to who he was going to see.
