Title: The Maker of War
Post by: Asinjin on November 11, 2016, 12:24:21 AM
To start with, xp:

Saladien - for being a good source of information and talents the other don't have - 2500

Ash - for scouting and more scouting - 2200

Valizar - for one round of mighty smashing after losing the foot that stomped around the multiverse - 2000

Vor'Ruk - for two devastating charges - 4000

Haas - for lots of effective Tyrogatore spell including a T Rex - 2300

What is left after the battle:

- the giant cleaver inscribed with "If you want your foot back, come and get it - Stronmus"

- The remains of the one dead Dusk giant

- the taffers bring back a slew of fey stuff

Can I. get a recap for the end of the battle

I don't remember when you left, so:

Predator warned Ash of the incoming creatures, which turned out to be Taffers retreating from the vanguard of the Fey force.  Ash barely escaped with his and Predators life as he fled from the fey force.  The group was soon surrounded by a chain wielding fey and a swollen mouth breathing troll on one side, and a force of Dusk Giants on the other.  Before engagement a unseen fey began casting powerful spell, stunning most of the group. The Habastly cleric summoned multiple swarms to defeat the smaller fey in the trees. The chain dude attacked our Habastly cleric Mallory and leaped away, spurring Vor'ruk is impale the swoll troll in a glorious charge.  Two Dusk giants barely were able to contain Valizar while Haas called down a physical representation of Tyrogatore.  Ash shot up the giants from afar.  The unseen protagonist fey baleful poly morphed our habastelea cleric and took him away.  Eventually Valizar fell to the beat down by two giants.  A third creature appeared with a massive cleaver, lopping off Valizar's curb stomping foot with a cackle, keeping it securely as a prize.  Vor'Ruk charged one of the giants surrounding Valizar and gutted him causing the giants to re-think their plan and they all disappeared.
Saladien's Kobold Fey cohort tried to get our attention, but it took time for Haas to cast comprehend languages because Saladien was still stunned.  He told us the Fey where still here and it was only an illusion.  We where able to end one of the giants before he got away, but all the other escaped.

Phyyric Victory, we lost a uber powerful cleric of habastalea.

Okay, so here's the deal.

1) I need to be healed seeing as I'm at the brink of death.
2) I need to get an artificial limb installed.
3) I need Ajax to Gate me to Stronmus' front door so I can challenge him or one of his champions to get my leg back.
4) I will die a glorious death at the hands of Stronmus and be reunited with the mighty Tyrogatore.
5) Haas will need to get a Valizar tattoo inscribed on his leg in order to honor my legendary curb stomp.
6) I need to either get cracking on a new character or focus on the Gnolls since Valizar's life is coming to an end.

One of the first questions you need to decide is whether you remain in Cheadsolas or go back to Balinhost.

I think we should regroup in Balinhost via the plant traveling staff.

Without Mallory, does the staff have enough to get you back that night?

I think we're capable of taking 7 (including Rom'Pei) with the staff.  Mallory accounted for another 5 (including himself).  We could take the most severely wounded back and the rest could stay in town until the staff recharges in the morning, or we could all stay here tonight and make three trips in the morning after the staff recharges.  7 of us go back (3 charges), Rom'Pei travels back (3 charges), then takes the rest with him back to Bainhost (3 charges).

Are the Taffers skilled in the healing arts?

Are they, by any chance, capable of removing epic level curses bestowed upon by greater gods?

They nod yes, and dance around your missing foot for ten minutes.  When they complete their ceremony, they smile at you as a flower grows from the ground where your foot was.  It is yellow, like a daisy.

That better be a curse reversing daisy of complete regeneration or Valizar is feasting on squirrel meat tonight...

Since we are on the topic of the cleaver and I assume that you get back to Balinhost safely whether its by Tyrogatore's Breath of Transport via Plants;

The cleaver is a magical two handed weapon for a medium character.  It does not offer a bonus to hit.  It is made of some planar metal which radiates chaos and you also learn that it can store one divine spell of any level that can be delivered by an attack.  It deals 1d10 damage and is a martial weapon for any of you.

If you die in Stronmus' realm, your soul will be trapped there as that insane deity's plaything, forever outside of even the mighty Tyrogatore's supreme reach. Do not be a fool.

At some point your prayers lead to the conclusion that the curse could only be removed by someone that can counter Stronmus' divine spell power.  There is also a built in removal mechanism, although your prayers can't reveal what it is, your common sense leads you to an obvious conclusion...

I will pray for an hour to swap out Summon 7 for an extended Tyrogatore's Breath/windwalk.

Then by the next morning, you are back in Balinhost, exhausted and with a report for Ellic and Martin.

The Taffers remain to watch.

When Sernene hears of what has happens, she is saddened and tries to divinely find Mallory to no avail.  Note that by the time she does that it is the next afternoon and it will have been 16 hours or so since his capture.  She responds after that, "I will return home and try to determine what is happening.  They are surely scared and confused after Mallory's message and disappearance."

He has his people inventory the Fey equipment that you bring back.  As best the taffers and you calculate, the swarms killed 140 fey.  Add that to the several you killed when you arrived back in Cheadsolas.

Only magical items survived the swarms, that and bones, although barely the bones.

9 Magic items are counted.  Further analysis tells Ellic and others that there were more (potions and such) as there are lingering magical auras.  However, the swarms destroyed as much as you found.

Ellic says, "You took the risk, so you keep any that you can use.  I would ask that you donate those that you can't to the war effort."

The first item you find, and later examine (or at least Ellic's people do), is an amber dragonfly.  It is normally only two inches long, but when activated, it behaves like a Mage Hand and grows to three times that size.  It requires a Handle Animal skill check to activate.

I would never ask The Great Lizard for such an item.  I only meant a well crafted piece of wood or stone or something like that.  I just need to be able to stand up straight so I can properly dispense Tyrogatore's justice.

The 7th item is a Ring of Enlarging, the fey call it a Giant Ring.  When worn, the wearer grows two size categories.  However, it cannot make stone or metal grow, so only non-metal and non-stone objects worn will increase in size.  Also, it only works for creatures that are naturally Small or smaller in size.

Just to be sure I've been doing this right all these years...it's 1 skill point to speak a language and 2 skill points to read and write.  Is that correct?  I know certain races require double that cost, but in general, is that how language works on Habololy?

It depends on if it is a class skill for your class; but for most base classes 1 point to speak and 1 to read/write.  Monk and Cleric would both be 1 and 1.  Kordan would be 1 and 2.

Okay, that's what I meant.  1 for speaking and 1 additional for read/write for a total of 2 (unless it's a cross-class skill).  Thanks for clarifying.

After you have returned and recovered, the items have been identified and await you distributing them, Ellic gives a report.

"All of the information you brought back is valuable, thank you for your efforts.  I know that we lost Mallory, but until right before you went, it was not an asset we had.  What we gained from Sernene and hopefully the rest of Cheadsolas could be a great asset.

Before, I used a chess analogy, so again; we have moved our bishop into play, and to counter our move they were forced to reveal a rook.  The winged fey creature is known as Zat.  It is the only one of its kind of real power on Habololy.  It came from the Gremliv Jungles, likely to join the fey on this battle.  It has been around since before the Doggeden War, but other than that I know little of it specifically.

The grey skinned Unseelie fey is not of Habololy, at least regularly.  Legends talk of him arriving in times of strife.  His name in Skaeshin the Maker of War.  He is a Shardakai fey.  The symbols on his body that you described are the symbol of a cult deity mostly unknown here, Maab, queen of the Unseelie."

Tali, who is present for this conversation, but has mostly been absent in the past several weeks, chimes in, "Maab has never been able to hold sway over much of the forest, but the cutting off of the Beastlands and the swing towards unseelie has been concerning to me that she might gain more influence.  Skaeshin is her best move towards influence.  Luckily, other forces of the forest that are remaining neutral in this war will not in keeping her at bay.  They are on alert for her clerics and I am confident that as long as we can defeat Skaesin, she will not become a factor."

Ajax sighs. "Maab is very dangerous. She is not a power of the Beastlands and her agents will likely be at full strength here. The goodly powers believe she may have engineered the crisis with the Beastlands and almost certainly tried to have Lord Arishimoto and his allies kidnapped in the Outlands. The longer this conflict drags on the greater the risk to all of Habololy from the anger of the outer planar powers. Stronmus has declared war against Tyrogatore and placed a substantial bounty on the heads of his clerics and champions."

Perhaps we can put out a call for aid to the religions of the Council deities to combat this new threat? This war is being used as a platform by 2 vile cults to gain influence on Habololy. The faiths of the Oldest Orc, Han~Sui, Dedestroyt...many should find this situation concerning enough to act. Ellic, have you contacted any of the relevant heads of clergy?

Ajax looks far more concerned than any of you have ever seen. "A journey to the Plane of Shadow is almost certainly one that will end in your death. The plane cannot abide the presence of life and in the course of only a few days you will become a shade or simply die. Worse your soul may be trapped there for eternity. In that place Nilas'Anor's servants are imprisoned and can still access his power.  If you fall there none of our powers can rescue you. Only one of celestial nature such as Solaris, servant of Hemator or Escalon the Arrow or myself could perish and return to the upper planes.  It is strange that they would take the cleric there, for they would have to expend considerable energy just to keep him alive. "

Maab would be a rival of Compture above all others but also Lakius. Her title is "Queen of Air and Darkness". Many evil lycanthropes worship her so Dresta would not welcome her either.

"Grovetender Lastelm will not join either side of the war and has left it to the local grovetenders to decide which side if either they will join.  It would take Scalehome ending lives on a large scale for him to join.

The faith of Dedestroyt would not join a war as a whole, but they are already involved as individuals...mostly on our side.

The Oldest Orc?  Are you trying to make a joke?

Treetop will not fight against Fey and creatures of the forest.

The dwarves of Smofarf have no interest and are too far removed.

Han~Sui has no army, and his clerics have as much allegiance to the nations they belong to to leave.

But to answer your question, I have looked into contacting the religions.  None have responded helpfully.  Our best allies all already here.  Stasis and Tyrogatore.  Tfop sent us Claude for a time and if the pirate war was not engulfing them, they would send more aid."

We are going to jump about a month in time, so I want to make sure anyone who needs anything immediate done gets it done before we pick up with these characters.  That's not to say you only have a week (because next we will do the gnolls) but just be advised that when we pick up with these characters, time will have passed.

I expect two to three gnoll sessions before we go back to Haas and crew for the remainder of the season.

They discover that the a curse will be transferred to anyone that removes it.  So Tali says, "I could disjunction it, but it both runs the risk of robbing me of my powers and then being cursed."

They work on a prosthetic, but one that can accommodate your weight is hard to make.  It can get done, but it will take time, unless you have lots of coin to pay.

I will not allow anyone to risk losing their powers over my foot.  I will wait for a prosthetic replacement or for Haas to research a way to create one out of force.

As far as payment, I don't have coin, but I can pay with a mighty staff.  I have no need for a weapon in combat.  The Great Lizard has blessed me with all I need in battle.

Shame you won't use a clicker, there are a number of people on the plateau that would trade you.

That said, Grant or Haas can contact Reik and some Drunnbar follower will make you a admantium foot / leg in exchange for that.  The value of the staff is such that they will have it done in two months.

You will have a -2 penalty to Dex and your speed will be reduced by 5 feet, but will now have a 2% immunity to critical hits (the off chance that they hit your foot.

Valizar would prefer a mighty Haas blessing over a prosthetic, but it might be wise to have a physical foot available in case Stronmus blocks your magic somehow.  Tyrogatore's enemies grow by the minute.  These fools must be made to pay for their insolence, and if I'm going to kick ass, I'll need a foot to do so.

Shortly after the new year begins, Haas and crew are made aware that a noteworthy individual has arrived and that they should gather at the shrine of Dedestroyt to meet him.

When you get there, you see a square faced, six foot tall, black haired human.  He has tan skin and is wearing a banded mail like armor with the symbol of Dedestroyt latched to the front of it.

Ellic says, "This is Mortimor Lede, Stalker of the Dead."  The human nods.  "He has come to answer the call we sent out for assistant against Scalehome.  He brings with him letter for Haas."

The human stands and says, "Great Haas and Mighty Valizar, despoiler of Stronmus' offspring; I bring you tidings from the Nabil, Commander of Baerl." He offers a scroll.

Ajax let's out a low, guttural, (very Orcish) snarl.  "I bear the Stalker no I'll will but I will not fight beside the servants of Baenrl. The fey are misguided and slipping towards damnation. The fire giants and their "allies" are already there waiting for them."

"Ellic, I will not abandon you or Commander Bradtree but I may choose to fight more of this battle on my own."
Wow, deja vu.

Ellic says to Haas, "Are you okay with this envoy coming to talk?"

Ellic says to Haas, "Are you okay with this envoy coming to talk?"
"If you choose to treat with them I will not interfere but it is not in their nature to give aid and then depart.  Those you invite as allies are apt to remain as occupiers."

Early in the second month, Ellic reports another diplomatic event.

"Our gnoll allies, the skilled either brothers pack, while trying to rescue one of their own that was imprisoned at a fort of the Wooduke's.  They were trying to free Kaklan, a gnoll that had for a decade had fought on the Boiled Line for and with the halflings.  In the effort, they killed a Deva.  Two of the pack of eight are dead."

The next session will be while Haas is at the meeting, since Hero will not be at the session.

Tyrogatore teaches us that even though all Vass have teeth, they will not all try to bite you. Individuals are judged based on their actions, not on their race or country of origin. I will give the giants an opportunity to prove themselves.

It depends on if it is a class skill for your class; but for most base classes 1 point to speak and 1 to read/write.  Monk and Cleric would both be 1 and 1.  Kordan would be 1 and 2.
Does this include the language of your native people?  For example, if you're an Elf, do you need to spend 1 skill point at 1st level to be able to speak Elven?  I've always played it so that I spent a point on my native tongue.  If that's not necessary, I'll get 1 skill point back per each of my characters.

You get your native language for free.

A meeting is set for Haas and Adam.  Ellic suggests Valizar accompany Haas and Ellic asks, "Is there anyone else that you would like to take?"

In other news, Tali reports that Ajax should return to the Fellos Estate, as the protection dome around it should not last much longer.
