"Who were they intending to make king?"
Thale says: "Hold that thought, we need to move this conversation somewhere more appropriate."

Thale leads the adapters, under heavy guard, out of the palace and inner bailey to a non-descript building. Ari, and possibly Parker and Asinjin, recognize it as the Ministry of Security. Inside there are a group of armed men and a few women, lead by Deputy minister Delaque. Thale says: "Deputy, you and your men will submit to a simple test by Lord Ari. If you are one of these doppelgängers then you can surrender or resist but you should look to your fellows for advice."

She looks confused but she and the others all submit and pass the test. She then leads all of you down into a tunnel and then to the Gaol. The adapters are all put in separate cells.

To the adapters, "Is there a leader among you?"

To Ari, "Any presences detected?"

Rubius makes a spot check to see if any of the Adapters are casting any spells, praying, or reaching for items.  d20 roll 16 + 8 = 24.  If I see anything, I whisper the info to my companions.

a few of the ministry guards radiate faint evil and some of the palace guards as well.

Which one do you ask?

None of them have cast spells or used any visible powers.

So there's not too much duplicated effort you should decide as a group what your plan is for interrogating them. They are all placed in individual cells but will be brought to an interrogation room.

There is nothing more immediate that needs to be done?

The castle is scure?  We have checked everyone for more adapters?  Messages need to be sent to all of the people of import around the kingdom about possible impostors.

How much do we get to do?  We hold no positions of power (except possibly Ari).  Are we allowed to interrogate them?

The situation is as described and thus far you have all just been swept along.  You are free to take any avenue you choose.

DM, I realize that we're in mid-session, but has there been any progress made regarding the 500,000 XP you owe us from the last battle?

Yes
Sarcasm aside, you are only a few hours into the day with no rest in sight. XP will be awarded when you get to rest but in the meantime you have adapters to interrogate as well as a bunch of other possibilities.
