Title: Storm My Castle...Please
Post by: Asinjin on December 07, 2012, 09:44:56 AM
Asinjin will get things started with his Inquisition spell on the barbarian.

"I apologize for this.  It will not be pleasant.  Your actions and refusal to cooperate have lead us to this.  Smofarf protect us."

He gets a save, which after what I do with the spell and him is a DC34 Willpower.  I twin the spell, so he has to make two.

If the target fails its save, it is forced to reply to the caster's questions (10), speak truthfully, and not respond in such a way that the answers provided may be misleading.

The questions posed may be answered with a simple yes or no, or they may require a more detailed response.

This spell cannot be used to force the target to divulge information it doesn't know, and the target creature is unable to fabricate lies of any kind while under the spell's hold.

1. Where is the army you were with marching towards?

2. Why are you and your people following Uscis and the army?

3.  List of the the creatures and allies that are traveling with the army.

To Thale, "We need two spells.  Hopefully they exist in the college or here.  Earthbind and Anti-Creature Aura."

I ask everyone else if they know who ringmen are.  Note that there is no time constraint on the spell's questioning.

4. What are your orders while marching?

5. What are your orders when you get to the city?

6. Where have you stopped on your trip from your home to here?

"Do you mean the wyrm? Based on its size I only know of two or three that it could be. The oldest and most powerful is Urfeaar the Scalding, who lives somewhere in the islands near Tas-tio-Horari. He rarely stirs, is content to eat sea creatures and likes living so I doubt he would sign on with Uscis. The second is a female, Speir the Cruel. She has no taste for massed battle. That leave Itkuressek the terror of the northern islands, who hates the Kingdom and goes out of his way to attack our ships when he can. A chance to burn an Icefian city or two would greatly appeal to him."

"I think that one is the more important one.  The other one can be cast by a cleric of....wait.  I can contingency to have the spell go off when it comes near.  So the Earthbind is more important."

To the others, "What do you think of luring Uscis and his mount out to the edge of the horde, that should prove easy since I was able to do it without trying.  Then ambushing it.  Huthrim, Ari, myself, Parker, Rubius, and one other."

Someone near by points to the ring mail worn by all of the standard Icefian soldiers.

4) No stopping and no infighting. 5)kill, pillage etc. 6) We met the main army two days ago. We only stop for a few hours to rest.

I leave him.  "Does anyone have any military questions, or any questions for him?"
Martine asks: "Are their tribes other than the Cavehome and Hunters of Men? What of the Blackhammers and Snow Serpents?"

to Huthrim, "Are you skilled at killing reds?"
Mouser says: "Only the Scalding is a great wyrm I believe. The Terror is one or two categories behind.

Huthrim says : "I've never killed a red. The only one I fought escaped. They are tougher than blacks and blues because their breath weapon is so much larger and they seem at home in any terrain. They also seem to be better magic users."

Question 7: "What tribes are traveling with the army other than the Cavehome and hunter of men?"

I cast detect magic to determine what other spells are effecting him.

To the others, not in front of him, "It has just occurred to me that the barbarians, at least the Cavehome, must not know what is traveling with them.  They have to be shielded from seeing and knowing, otherwise they would flee."

What is creating the visibility problem?

Huthrim says: "I was just going to do it myself.  You should know, I usually plan and research for a month or more before setting out on a hunt. Wyrms that survived the Hunt should not be taken lightly."

I think that is an excellent idea.

Asinjin, do you think your ethereal mounts can out run Big Red?

I will take one out to the horde and try to attract Uscis' attention, and try to draw him off. If the sword has truly broken him, he will follow. I will lure him back here, within range of the Castle's artillery. Uscis will be compelled by the sword to engage me himself, leaving the wyrm to the cannon. A small party can lay in wait, springing on Uscis once the bombardment begins.

Perhaps we should try to coordinate a strike on the main force while Uscis and the wyrm are occupied...a small party of our most powerful casters can venture out and thin out the horde.

The Phantom Steeds cannot out run the wyrm normally.

"I would like to try and ambush them both in the field."

The cannon have a 7 mile range. What do you consider the "field"?

Huthrim listens and shakes his head. "Unless the dark knight has some magical control over the wyrm I doubt it will allow itself to be drawn into combat so easily.  A wyrm that survived the Hunt will be cautious. Our best chance would be to go in the hours before dawn when it will be sleeping. If the black knight is truly possessed by the sword he will come alone.

I know this countryside well. There is no where nearby that is good ground to ambush a wyrm so we must be very careful."

"It was easy enough yesterday to lure to both Uscis and the mount out to the edge of the army.  That is far enough away for us to ambush them."

Once we pick a location for this confrontation, Astrek could dig out some burrows and tunnels in advance to conceal our number and provide a safe area to fall back to. Enough earth above us should conceal us from the wryms senses as well as the sword.

Other than Huthrim who do you include in these conversations?
Title: Re: Storm My Castle...Please
Post by: Asinjin on December 10, 2012, 08:48:46 PM
I can only take five others on my teleport, so the four of us and Huthrim.  Astrek is now a killing machine, so he gets one of the spots.

Wait, I need to include Thale as well, since we will need his casting to prepare us for the ambush.

"We go out.  I lore them to the rest of you.  You are hidden from them magically.  We it gets close enough, Hurthim, Rubius, Parker and Ari unleash with ranged attacks from hidden.  I will contingent a spell to save me when it breathes on me, then you fire."

"There is something about 'falling back' to a hole in the ground where a "nightmare-made-real" breathes all consuming flame down upon me that makes me question the effectiveness of that tactic."

My locate creature worked on the dragon, correct?

How long did it take it to get from where it was to the edge of the barbarians where I attacked?

How hard was it working to move as fast as it was?  Meaning, did it seem to be moving 1x, 2x, 3x, or 4x to go that fast?

Back to the remainder of my inquisition questions:

7) Who leads the barbarian forces?

8) Who made you the offer to come to Icefia and do this?

Yes the spell worked. It was clearly moving faster than normal but did not appear to be exerting itself.  You were about a mile away from it and it was there in well under a minute.

At one point during this planning, Asinjin has a coughing fit then says, "Why are we planning this?  We aren't in charge here.  Who is responsible for this?  I'm no killer of beasts and armies."

Shaking his head.

"I need to be away from here soon.  Arian, what do you want done?"

We go ask him, what he would like done, and what his plans are for the attack.

You find Arion, Nisoru, Martine, King Oliver, King Rosetree, Michael, Ajax, an Ice Gnome and a dwarf with blond hair and an ill fitting tabard bearing Stasis' symbol all standing around a table with fairly sophisticated models of the castle, Messada and the surrounding countryside. They all appear to be listening to a figure most of you have seen before: Thanis Whiteknight, the former Lord Protector of the Kingdom.

They listen to your ideas, a few of them with looks of genuine fear, before responding. Nisoru says: "Drawing Uscis away from the army is an excellent idea, but this is very bad ground on which to challenge the wyrm. You would have to get it very close to the castle for the defenses to be of any help. Unless you could paralyze it in some way."

Thanis says: "Unless Uscis is a madman, and they typically don't rise to positions of power in armies, I don't think there is any chance he intends to try and breach the castle. Even if we assume he has only a minimal knowledge of the disposition of our armies he must know that there is no force capable of breaking his siege within a month's march; and not until the spring.  He means to trap us here and force us to fight or starve. We must find a way to drive off his barbarians and disable the juggernaut. I am confident we can dispatch the zombies with the forces we have on hand."

Ajax says "I disagree. Uscis knows of Stasis' plight and it is also likely that he knows it will soon end. He means to strike now."

"There is something about 'falling back' to a hole in the ground where a "nightmare-made-real" breathes all consuming flame down upon me that makes me question the effectiveness of that tactic."
Nothing that can't be solved with a 90 degree turn. More practical than engaging the wyrm completely out in the open.

What is the terrain in the surrounding countryside?

Do we know what kind of range the Hunter can detect paladins at?

There is nearly three miles of open field north, west and south. The city is a shade over a mile southeast. Due east is the river, which is frozen but not solidly.

Nisoru says: "We know a great deal about the sword as it was captive here for so long. Still, only it's master knows the full extent of its powers. It can exactly locate any paladin within one mile, much like Lord Ari's ability but so precise as to render invisibility useless. There are countless stories of the sword guiding its wielder to paladins miles and miles away."
