Title: Tinker Feats
Post by: Hero on November 03, 2011, 11:10:04 PM
There's a feat in Races of the Dragon called "Extraordinary Trapsmith" (http://www.realmshelps.net/cgi-bin/featbox.pl?feat=Extraordinary_Trapsmith) that reduces the cost and time required to craft traps by 25% (or 50% for kobolds). I think we can adapt this feat for tinkers:

Design-Build Expert
You can save time and money constructing a clicker by overlapping it's design and crafting phases.
Prereq: Craft(clicker) 5, Knowledge(any tinker design category) 5
Benefit: When you determine the cost and the time required to create a clicker using one of your own designs, reduce the base price by 25%.  Because some decisions are omitted from the design and instead made on the fly during construction, the optimum design cannot always be achieved; the DC of tinkering checks made to operate a clicker made in such a way is increased by 2.
Special: A tinker gnome who selects this feat can instead reduce the base price by 50% for determining raw materials and time required to create a clicker.

I don't know about the tinker gnome getting it to 50%.

Probably right. Just kept it consistent with the trapsmith feat.

Attention to Detail

Your thoroughness in planning ahead makes your designs easier to construct.

Prereq: Tinkering 4, Knowledge(any tinker category) 4, Craft(clicker) 4, Int 15+

Benefit: When designing a new clicker, you may add a number up to your Tinker level to the Design DC check for the clicker. If this check is successful, the Craft(clicker) DC to construct this design is reduced by the same number; construction cost and time are reduced by a percentage equal to this number, while design time is increased by this same percentage.

I like this one a lot.

Innovative

Your are a visionary when it comes to designing new clickers.

Prereq: Tinkering 8, Knowledge(any tinker category) 8, Int 17+

Benefit: Your intelligence is considered 8 points higher for any knowledge checks made to design a new clicker.

Savant

Your ability to design, build, and repair Clickers was seemingly ingrained into you at birth.  Concepts and practices that take others years to master, come to you as easily as breathing.

Prerequisites: Innovative, Tinkering:12, Knowledge (any Tinker cat.) 12, Int 19+

Benefit:  The DC for Designing, repairing, and building new clickers is reduced by half your Tinker levels.

Both of these are good, but I want to wait to see how the rules work out before adopting them.  We may find the rules for creating clickers to be too easy or hard already.

Not so much a new feat, but an old feat for tinkers: did we decide when you take Weapon Focus, how specific do you have to be with firearms?

Can you take Weapon Focus (firearms)?  (epbuls)?  (Pistols)? etc...

I asked that years ago when considering feats for Marston and it was determined at that time that firearms and epbuls could be combined unless something specifically states otherwise.  For example, one could take Weapon Focus (firearms/epbuls), but you cannot apply the benefits of the Pistolier to shotguns or sniper rifles because they aren't specifically pistols.

I think weapon focus should be based on the style of weapon (pistol, rifle, shotgun). Shouldn’t matter if it’s a epbul or firearm for the purposes of attacking.

That makes sense to me, although I can't ever imagine anyone taking focus in shotgun since it only needs to hit an area.  I suppose for other more advanced feats as a prereq.
