But the ones we fought were made of flesh.
Correct.

It is clear to almost all of you that there was a portal of some sort used in the Lakius ceremony.

Thamolly says: "I doubt it came from the Plane of Water.  Why would it harm faithful of a water power?"  Russel says: "I know little of the planes.  Until my recent experience they held little interest for me and chronomancy works poorly off the material plane.  Maglore, Allanda, Ulik or Escalon would be those that I would ask.  Ben Dothan also."

Ari has a pretty good know(planes) check...d20=12+19=31.

Ari can detect lingering evil auras. He also has the planar ranger's "planar sense" which let's him determine the home plane of an outer planar creature with a Wis check (DC=20-HD of creature), if that applies.

Dagon is pretty obscure. He is often referred to as an "Elder Evil". He is feared by the Tanari and is the lord of a vast water realm. He has many followers among the evil creatures of the deep.

That depends on the level of evil.  Use the standard levels of evil for detect evil.

Lingering Aura: An evil aura lingers after its original source dissipates (in the case of a spell) or is destroyed (in the case of a creature or magic item). If detect evil is cast and directed at such a location, the spell indicates an aura strength of dim (even weaker than a faint aura). How long the aura lingers at this dim level depends on its original power:
Original Strength    Duration of Lingering Aura
Faint    1d6 rounds
Moderate    1d6 minutes
Strong    1d6x10 minutes
Overwhelming    1d6 days

Upon closer inspection the well only appears about waist deep on Ebian before the water changes color so the tentacle must have come from the portal.

Overwhelming. The well itself and the water radiate magic.
