How's the Sgt?

Did you remember to make his self-stabilization checks? Maybe he can save himself since we are all so inept.

He's dead. (I gave Quorl the spot check when he failed the first two stabilize checks.)

"We have to go now before this gets even worse.  I can carry the Sergeant and the prisoner after we bind him."  I am still large so I should be able to.  "We aren't far from headquarters."

"Robert, I will gather the assassins' possessions as evidence and help cover our retreat back to headquarters.  Master Quorll, may I continue to use your scimitar until we get back in case we're assaulted again?"

"Someone quickly search the dead, we don't want to leave anything obvious, but I don't think we can take them all right now."

A description of who does what, what methods they use and for how long would be helpful here.

Before Robert lifts the bodies for exit, he will search the ones that are not being taken.

"Brevis, can you detect magic?"

I'm so used to being on the other side of the law that I forget we're the good guys and have every right to be here.  Since we're so close to headquarters, I say we send someone to bring backup and take all the time we need to search thoroughly.  By that I mean taking 20 on searching the bodies, each room, both the interior and exterior of the house, and the two adjacent houses.

Why risk getting ambushed while trying to bring the bodies back by ourselves?  Let's have the full support of our fellow constables in this investigation.

"I disagree, that one that left knows we are here and could easily know that we are in bad shape.  Their reinforcements are closer and their messenger is already on his way.  All it would take is one more of those elementals, and we are crushed.  I don't even want to search the house in case of traps."

pause

"And perhaps if we get back quickly enough, they can revive the sergeant."

I doubt they'd be foolish enough to return here knowing that a squadron of constables lies in wait.  One man can't truly know what shape we're in, especially after witnessing how effectively his associates were dispatched.  The sergeant stands a better shot at getting revived if we have a cleric sent here.  We took them by surprise and that gives us the advantage.  If we leave now, we risk losing any evidence that may be here and that would dishonor what the sergeant stood for.  I don't want his death to be in vain.

"We didn't take them by surprise, they were lying in wait for us.  The focus right now is making sure no one else dies, we have to go as soon as possible.  Having a cleric sent here will surely take longer than us going to the cleric.  The sergeant stood for sense and justice, neither of which are accomplished if we die here."

I cast detect magic and scan the room and the bodies.

"That elemental was not here of its own accord. There is a spellcaster lurking somewhere in the area that we have not yet seen. We should move quickly."

Each of the dead men have a magic ring, one has a magic short sword, the other two magic daggers. Both have a potion and you see three empty potion bottles on the floor.

The man you captured has a magic sword, ring and boots.

I grab all the magical items and stuff them in the bag of holding.

"They are probably watching the front door. We should go out the back, but we'll have to make our own exit. Robert, can you work on that? Meanwhile, I'll try raising an alarm. Maybe if our enemies think reinforcements are coming they will be less likely to re-engage."

I cast "ghost sound" out front of the building and mimic a ringing bell. As loud as 16 humans shouting, so should attract plenty of attention.

Robert will take up the sergeant's hammer and smash down the back door or window, whichever at quick glance looks easier to get through.

"Constables!  We are leaving!"

"Very well Robert.  For the Sergeant's sake, we'll do it your way."  Gneetagh picks up Sgt. Windborne's body in a fireman's carry and steady's him with his right arm.  With my left, I'll keep the scimitar at the ready in case we're attacked.

You make your way out into the streets. You can all make a spot check at the end of the alley.

Robert total 21, however, no glasses, so big minus every ten feet.

Quorl lets Gneetagh keep the scimitar for now.  29 on his spot at the end of the alley.

Quorl sees two well concealed men on a rooftop to the north (left) about half a block away. There appears to be a crowd forming at the end of the street the house you left faces.

HQ is southwest of your current position so right and at some point another right.

"Can anyone go ahead and make sure there is not another trap?"  Robert does not have his glasses on and is carrying two bodies.

"Let's just stick together Robert.  If there is a trap we are…well, let's just hope there aren't any."

Just out of curiosity, are there any wyverns in the sky circling us as we make our way back to HQ?

There are wyverns in the sky but as far as I can tell you have not made a decision.

Right towards the crowd or left towards the guys on the roof.  HQ is behind you and you can't start that way.

"We should head towards the crowd. They could not have known their assault would attract so much attention, therefore it is not likely that there is an enemy hidden among them?"

Is there a temple close by that would allow us to bypass both the crowd and lookouts?

As you are deciding which way to go all of you hear a woman's voice say:  my Lord Marius, protector of the free elves of the north, master of Greysnows and faithful servant of the true powers makes you this pledge: if you and the oppressors of the elves who you command, leave these lands in peace, he will provide for them a bounty of food and a promise of an early spring with gentle rain to nourish their fields. In a show of his good faith, one thousand stone of fresh fruit and vegetables has been left on the back slope of the Nest

It is loud and seems to come from above.
