I wanted to call this thread: Bring out your should be dead.

The day Mortimor goes into the fort is the 25th day of the 11th month of 788.

The plan as it stands:

Mortimor will go in to look for those that should be dead.  During that distraction, Saladien will sneak in and look around.

You have surveyed the area with animals to find a small entrance into the caverns below and are looking for ways to go through that to hopefully get inside that way.

A couple notes on the Stalker of the Dead (which would be known since most of you worship Dedestroyt and you had two clerics in your midst).

- It is not until a higher level than I guessed that there can be only one of them, 8th level or higher, so he might be up to 7th level as a stalker
- You notice, and this goes along with the legends that you have heard, that Mortimor sleeps very little and seems no worse off for it
- The first time you neared him, many of you feared to go near him.  Syrus still won't get within ten feet of him, and Saladien is gets queasy.

As a companion, Mortimor is humorous and good to have...to the gnolls.  Saladien finds his colorful descriptions of the deaths of those he has hunted down not amusing.

"There was this fat wealthy Magenthian merchant.  He soiled himself when he saw me coming.  It smelled so bad."  hahahah  "He got to his ship.  I only walked after him.  Stinking and crying as he went.  I let him think he had gotten away, and then I brought Dedestroyt's finger upon him!"  hahahahaha

Ozzle listens wide eyed and eager for more details every time he tells a story.  When he speaks of the merchant soiling himself, both he and Cackle laugh in stereo.  Cackle purrs when he hears of people crying and begging to be spared.  After hearing these stories, Ozzle sleeps like a baby that night knowing that his fallen brothers will be tormenting the soul of the murderous giant that sent them home to Dedestroyt's realm.

RECAP:
We built a mighty funeral pyre for our fallen brothers after taking a fang from each of them in their honor.  We howled and barked for hours as the embers rose to the sky.  We noticed faintly colored light emerge from the flame as they burned.  Orange (for Necromancy) and Green (Enchantment).  As far as we know or felt, nothing happened to any of us after their bodies finished burning.  Not sure where the essence of their blood magic traveled to.

Saladien received a letter overnight.  Turns out it was from the giant stating that he'd give us 7 days to mourn the dead then we could either surrender or be killed.  We all vowed to avenge our brother's deaths, so we marched on.  Tarkin and Ozzle helped cover our tracks as we slipped deeper into the forest.  We managed to travel for about 11 or 12 days until Saladien received a sending from camp saying that we were going to be joined on our travels by a mighty stalker of the dead named Mortimor.  He reached us eventually and let us know that the giant is on Dedestroyt's naughty list for being brought back from the dead.  We planned an ambush and continued to travel.

Eventually, we saw some clouds roll in and, sure enough, guess who paid us a visit?  This time the brothers were ready.  We strategically hid around the edge of a clearing in the forest while Tox baited him into close combat.  Mortimor hid in a crevasse while camouflaged by leaves and twigs.  Once the giant and his griffon appeared, it was on.

Fey were sneaking up on us while we were waiting for the giant to descend, but Scratch would have none of it.  His spidey senses took over and the poor bastard who got to us first ended up grappled and beaten into a coma.  He had just enough air left in his lungs to alert the other fey in the area before the darkness took him.

All of us were glitter dusted, but most of us managed not to be blinded.  Saladien and Drax fired back with burning embers of revealing to root out a good number of fey.  Cyrus, who was sneaking around, managed to catch a fey sniper in a tree and pummel it with a swarm of bats, effectively taking it out of the fight.

Once the fey were routed, Saladien cast a major image of an amorous griffon flying down to put the moves on the giant's griffon companion.  The distraction worked and the griffon stopped in mid-air to await the phantom griffon.  The giant, initially unaware of the distraction, swept in and hit Tox squarely in the chest with the magic mace, but not before Ozzle unleashed a hunter's mercy infused arrow into his heart.  Tox took the blow like a champ with his new armor and fought back.  The giant then called to his companion to snap him out of his daze, but he had been severely wounded by the arrow.

After a brief melee exchange with Tox and some magic assaults by the spellcasters, Mortimor sprung from his trap and assaulted the giant.  At this point, the giant was reeling from combat.  Tarkin hits him with another hunter's mercy infused arrow, more magic hits, then Mortimor announces he must deliver the finishing blow in order to send Dedestroyt his prize.  Tox flies into a fury, but manages not to deliver the killing blow and instead beats him with his fists.  Mortimor brings the mighty sword down and nearly decapitates the giant to finish him forever.

Shortly after the final blow, a lightning blast struck the corpse and knocked the brothers back.  Mortimor laughs as he realizes it was Stronmus' attempt to bring him back from the dead, only to fail miserably due to the power of the stalker.

We bury the giant's items so we can't be tracked or scryed and take his potions.  We then decide to head to the compound to complete our original mission.

We all get to the compound and stake out the area with animals and magic.  We decide the best approach to execute our rescue is to have Mortimor go in and announce he's there to collect the souls of those who should be dead.  While he's distracting the soldiers and scouts, Saladien and Cyruss will blink in invisibly and try to pinpoint our p.o.w.'s.  The brothers find a nice underground entrance they can sneak into and await the signal that the coast is clear to attempt to enter.  That's where we left off.

There are three giant sized waterskins filled with magical potion.  Each has a gallon of liquid.

"Well done brothers. But Stronmus' pack has claimed 2 of our own. We are owed another life."

If there is time, Drax cuts out the giant's heart, takes a bite, then passes it around to the others.

If there is still time, I am taking a finger.

Did we find Bugs Bunny's playbook last session?

There is time for both, although Mortimor takes care to leave the body in good order when you depart.

Just to clear up a bit.  It wasn't Saladien that cast the illusion it was Cyrus.  Also the griffon was pretending to attack the other griffon.

A few notes about the fort from your animal recon:

- Outside the wall, there is a ten foot ditch and a ten foot rampart with wooden spikes.  This exists on the northern, eastern, and southern walls.

- The only gate, on the western side, has an inclining road of about feet leading to the gate.

- The fort is rectangular with the long sides facing north and south.

- Everything is made of wood.

- The clearing around the fort is home to several thousands halflings and other races.  There homes are not fortified and low to the ground.

- The animals note that they see at least a couple Sakor'akai flying around the fort.

- There also note that there are humans and elves in and around the fort.

- The wooduke's flag, three vertical bars, two green flanking a brown, flies above the fort.

Is the wood duke a know Fey/Scalehome sympathizer?  I forgot if we already established that.

About a year ago, he withdrew support for Ellic and the forces opposing Scalehome.  He has not officially endorsed or joined Scalehome, but the feeling from Ellic is that he is no longer and ally.

So the animals didn't find anything in the scouting that might change up our plan?  Such as the location of the prisoner.

They did not find out where Kaklan is.  They cannot get into any of the buildings inside the fort.  Given enough time, they might be able to get in (maybe a few days for the right opportunity).

You do get a report that there is a cleric of Habastly working in the fort (although this is surprising).  There is a shrine to Habastly in the town surrounding the fort.

The animals are able to land in the fort and climb the walls without magical interference or alarms that are obvious being triggered.

Mortimur says that he will contact you that evening, when he prays so as not to be noticed casting the senging.

We will pick up tomorrow with Mortimur making his first sending to you that first night.  He will have been in the fort for about eight hours.

We still don't have a good plan to use the distraction.  The walls are watched, if they have any discipline we will not get in.

I will be blinking with fey invisibility so it depends on how many fey we have.  Can any of clerics divine that for us to see if there are any fey in there and if it is a good idea for me to go into the fort.

Maybe we should just Ask for him back, if a Gnoll force shows at the edges of their fort they will release him.  We could also blockage them, preventing anything from getting in our out for awhile..  Might change their minds.  Subterfuge isn't out strong point, so maybe we should challenge them a bit to a stand up fight.

For what it is worth, Syrus and Saladien do not see any Fey around.  Syrus suggests that even if they don't even the fort during the diversion, they can at least watch from the tree line and look for fey that would be watching Mortimur.

Syrus offers to cast Augury about an action you want to take.  If will require someone give him valuable tokens that belong to the person taking the action for him to cast.  The tokens are a focus, not used up in casting.

I thought it was Syrus and Saladien who were going to blink invisibly throughout the compound.  Maybe they should cast Augury on themselves to see if that action is wise.  Scratch said he could get us underground with his blood magic, and if worse comes to worse, we can always kill our way to where they're keeping him.

You are correct, Syrus would cast it on himself and Saladien, so I guess he would have those items.
