Asinjin:
Here I will list things that you characters know of, and also things that you have never heard of (in the case of the 2nd, its for you players since your characters don't know what they don't know.)

Asinjin:
If there are dragons, none of you have ever seen one.  You know what they are and you fear evening mentioning the word, lest one actually appear.

Asinjin:
Assume you have not seen a giant (this may change for an individual character), but you believe they exist.  You would only call them giants, however, not have classifications for them (frost, fire, etc.)

Asinjin:
Elementals exist, along with mephits, much in the same way as you expect.

And Earth Elementals officially have tremorsense in 5th edition.

Asinjin:
None of you have ever heard of a Gremlin.
