xp for whoever tells the tale for Tox and Razk.

After the story is told, those two will have to decide what they do.  Note that Cackle is with them.

The (remaining) brothers let Mortimer and the ENF go into the fort for some recon.  The appearance of a Stalker of the Dead unnerves many of the occupants.  They wait for a sending from Mortimer to tell them when the Diseased one is being held.  Mortimer tells them that their target is being held in a pit and not in the fort proper.  The brothers discuss/argue about the best way to go about their rescue.  Scratch says use the caves.  Some say to go through the front gate.  Others want to climb the wall.  They finally realize Scratch is probably the wisest among them and decide to go under the wall.  They have the ENF's animals find a way into the cave system and Scratch uses his blood magic to make the opening large enough to crawl through.  Once in the caves, they send FlapJack to scout around.  After a few hours they make it to a cave that has magically reinforced pillars and what look to be well openings.  Not knowing how to proceed, the brothers go back and get Razik, who had stayed back with Tox at the camp, and have him use his blood magic to locate their target.  In the meantime Mortimer sends them again and the brothers ask where their target is in relation to the well that they found.  Mortimer responds with directions and the brothers hatch another plan that involves summoning a few creatures.  They get back to the cave with the pillars and well openings.  Syrus summons a small earth elemental to quickly find the pit.  Once the elemental returns, Syrus summons a creature that can melt stone and the creature melts a tunnel to the pit where Kaklin is being held.  Kaklin waits for the smoldering rock to cool a bit before making his escape.  As he is making his way down the tight shaft, the brothers (who can) see a glow-y halfling shape at the top of the hole they made.  Hates-Fey-Brother uses blood magic to make Kaklin small and Kaklin quickly falls out of the shaft and into the cavern where the brothers are.  Scratch uses his blood magic to all but close the tunnel to the pit and the brothers and Kaklin begin to move to the exit.  As they are leaving the cave, they see a tiny, firefly sized thing that emits a multitude of golden light emerge from the shrunken tunnel opening.  The thing grown and takes the glowing form of a Deva.  Kaklin says it is the Cultist Cleric's bitch.  The ENF throws up some magic fog and the party continues to flee.  The ENF does that a few times, then the Deva appears in front of them in a tight tunnel area.  The Deva gives them an ultimatum, Surrender or die.  That goes over as any of the other ultimatums the brothers have received has.  From what Scratch can tell, the Deva attacked and the brothers fought back with spear and spell.  The brothers got some surprising hits on the Diva and Scratch grappled it.  After about a minute, the Deva, having been stabbed, entangled, magic missiled, and insulted, summons its remaining strength and breaks out of Scratch's grapple.  It gets rewarded by some more stabs from the brothers.  Sensing weakness, Scratch, a devout worshiper of Dedestroyt, uses the power granted him by his deity, and uses a death touch on the Deva.  Dedestroyt smiled that day as the soul of the Deva was sent his way.

The brothers grab trophies from the dead Deva and head to the exit of the caves.  When they get there, they realize that there is a battalion of halflings waiting for them at the exit.  They look for another way out but don't find one.  The brothers reluctantly decide to surrender to a Stalker of the Dead who happens to be visiting the fort.  The brothers emerge from the caves and are relieved of their weapons and taken into custody.  They are put into the normal cells in the fort and the halflings proceed to cast every spell they can think of to keep them in there.

They have been relieved of all items, so the only spells that can be cast are verbal only.

It needs to be noted that Syrus is not put in the cell with the rest of you.

There are three cells in the bank of them where you are.  You are all placed in one, which is about twenty by ten feet.  Kaklan is not placed with you.  Those in the cell next to you are Kaklan's pack and they ask lots of questions; most of the responses are ones that are sad to hear.  Except the death of the Deva, of which the gnolls at least enjoy the news.

- Arcane Lock
- Deathwatch
- Consecrate
- Detect Magic
- Detect Evil

This is for Hero.  Just a side note that Habololian Magic Missiles don't get Spell Resistance.  According to the Habololy site and also documented on page 37 in "Magic of Habololy" is this revision:

Magic Missile
Spell Resistance: No

I suspect you may have been more effective against the Deva with this little tidbit of knowledge.  Just thought I'd relay this to the group in case you were unaware.

Wasn't his Ray of Enfeeblement that got stopped by the Spell resistance?  The missiles worked fine I thought

Can all of the gnolls that are captured and Saladien please list items of note that will be taken from you when you are captured.  Also note that I will allow for Tox and Razk to be holding items that would not have been at all useful in the mission.  One of those things that we already noted was your father's sword, which Tox is holding.

Where's Mortimur during all this?  We're supposed to be in his custody.  Is he here "watching" us or is he somewhere else?  If we get a chance to be alone with him for "questioning," I'd like to discuss how he plans on busting us all out of here without having to fight every soldier in the entire complex.  Also, he'll need to get our stuff back if possible.

You can dig into it, however, it doesn't take you long to figure out that the dirt replenishes fairly quickly.  Obviously magically.

The only door out of your cell is at the back of it.  Through the bars, you can see the main courtyard.  You cannot see out of the back door and into the hall that connects all of the cells.

He helps escort you into the cells and watches over you all as spells are cast.  He asks out loud so that you can hear (those of you understanding common), "These are proofed from magical communication?"  There is a nod of yes.

There is one point early the second day, where a loud argument breaks out between Mortimur and the cleric of Hemator Mathis.  Mathis wants an immediate trial and summary execution for the gnolls acts.  "There is no doubt that they killed blessed Rhea!  The punishment must be swift and unwavering!  Hemator condemns those action without question!"

Mortimur responds, and his deep voice dominates the halflings, "No, no, no.  A trial must take place.  The letter of the law cleric.  We are civilized, we have standards.  I will not sanction such an execution until those are met."  His tone is unmistakably tinted with sarcasm and for those smart enough the reversed argument between the two and what would normally be expected is odd.

To Mathis chagrin, the fort cleric of Habastly contributes after a few minutes.  "I have to agree, and am thankful to be able to do so, with Mortimur.  They are safely held and there will be a trial.  If the facts are what they say, it will not take long once a judge has arrived."

Arguments continue and finally, Commander Whitstone, the half cloak wearing halfling arrives.  "Everyone will stand down.  Cleric, return to your study.  Mortimur, thank you for your help, but if your mission here is complete, it is time for you to move on to the next town."

Mortimur leaves later that day.

Can we cast spells? Drax tries to surreptitiously cast a Prestidigitation (only verbal and somatic components) during meal time to see if any alarms go off. If he gets caught he claims he was just trying to impart some flavor to the terrible food.

When you try to cast, you find it hard to concentrate and must make a Concentration check in order to succeed.

The bare are narrow enough such that you can't get much more than your hand through.  That is enough to scratch the dirt outside.  You begin to dig (its slow going with just your fingers).  Before you reach a depth at which the dirt would start to replenish, a guard tells you to stop.

Also, Scratch will make constant listen checks to see what he can hear.  I can pinpoint people within 30 ft and has a +21 to his listen checks.

He is listening to try to determine the following
  • Distance from their cell door to the main entrance to their cell block
  • How many guards are in their cell block area at any given time
  • How long between roving patrols, if any
  • Conversations among the guards about them or Kaklin or the ENF

- The main entrance to the cell block is thirty feet from the entrance to the cell.  You are in the first cell.

- Just one guard in the hallway and one watching from the outside.

- The roving patrols that pass the cell in any way are in two forms.  One patrols the open area in the fort in front of the cell which you can see, they pass every fifteen minutes.  There is also pairs of soldiers that walk the walls.  Every five minutes one passes that takes a look at the cells.  In addition, the cells are visible from the courtyard, so anyone out there can look in at any time.

  • Conversations among the guards about them or Kaklin or the ENF

This will depend on how long you are there and listening.  But at least you learn:

- Kaklin has been put back in his pit with extra defenses.

- Saladien is a mystery to them and they are not sure what to do with them.

- You gnolls are grouped in with the rest of Kaklan's pack.  The assumption seems to be that you came to rescue him because you are his allies.

- They believe with some certainty that you have allies that were not captured.

Your time in the cell is more comfortable than you would expect in a gnoll prison, and depending on your impression of halflings, maybe less comfortable than you would expect from them.

The cell is kept clean through magical means.  The temperature is bearable, especially for gnolls.  Even though the cell is open to the outside air, you are in a place where even in deepest winter, which is now a month passed, it doesn't often get below freezing.  You are fed three times a day, and given clean water to drink to times in addition to your meals.  The cells are small, but there is enough room for you to stretch, walk and do simple exercise.  You are allowed to talk to each other whenever you want.

Detective spell are cast on you daily.

"Do they understand common.  I was told some do not."

There are two halflings and a human asking the question.

Just curses at them in elvish... ( so they don't think he can speak common )

"It would be easier if you all cooperated.  We need to have an open conversation here if your time is going to be reasonable."  The halfling, who is dressed in military dark green and brown with leather armor and a short sword says.  He has a round bush of curls hair that looks like a helmet would fit perfectly on it.  He is holding a board with paper and a pencil.

"My name is Fin.  I will be in charge of your condition.  It would be easier if I didn't have to refer to you by number or nickname I create.  So far, I have Drax."

Why should we cooperate with those who are keeping us here against our will? You have no right to imprison us.

Finn replies, "We caught you breaking a dangerous criminal out of confinement and you killed a Deva while doing it.  If you don't think that gives us the right to imprison you...I just don't know."

"But you should cooperate because it will only be better for you if you do.  Otherwise, we can't help you be comfortable."

You are wrong. You haflings betrayed our packmates and keep them wrongfully imprisoned here. We were trying to liberate them from you traitors. Your guard dog died in a fair fight that it initiated. Release us.

Fin shakes his head, "Let me know if there is anything we can provide to make you more comfortable.  Type of food, clothing, basic comforts.  You are being held under the authority of the Wooduke whose realm you are in and whose fort this is.  He will hold you here until a trial can be held.  That will occur once an appropriate judge can make it here."

The halfling engages in no more debate about the reasons you are where you are.

After about two months, the gnolls see that Saladien is released to Grant and Vor'Ruk.  There is no indication you are part of the deal, although there is an argument on your behalf.
