I think avatars just dissipate. (In this case after being stomped and blown to smithereens)

Couple questions/comments:
  • Were plans discussed to retrieve Solaris and Alara? That’s a problem I feel like the survivors should discuss and assign a lead.

And then it was done...

Dash let them know that Soar said goodbye but that sadly their other ally Miril was dead.  Worse yet, they could not find the body in the rubble.

Just noticed this. If we catch Harrick riding around on a dragon zombie...

of the 11 PCs loosely and directoy involved in the Battle of Ila'Alnar

Win Rate ( living ) - 7/12 - 58%
Loss Rate ( dead ) 4/12 - 33%

Of course Solaris is a wild card here.. could play with either team.

RIP Knot, Koth, Valizar, and Vor'Ruk.

Thoughts on whether the win rate for the Company of the Long Odds is higher or lower.

Alara’s vision slowly cleared, but the ringing in her ears showed no sign of subsiding.  She remembered the fall onto the unyielding stone floor.  She was sure that there were others present when she came through.  There was at least a moment when the wretched presence of the avatar was gone, but just as quickly it returned.  Then there was guttural roar, followed by a shockwave and then unconsciousness.

She sat up and without thinking, removed her helmet and cast a minor healing on herself.  It succeeded and she looked to the mithril diamond shaped power key on her belt.  It was not shining, which was comforting.  She looked around and realized she was surrounded by bodies; dozens or more.  Before she could gain her feet, she saw Solaris standing beside her, his mace in one hand and the Gemblade in the other.  In his always serene voice: “I have augmented your defenses against fire.  You have only been unconscious for a few minutes.”

She stood up and looked around.  All of the bodies were in shackles.  They were mostly dwarves; not surprising given how many were captured at Oneash.  She took the Gemblade and examined it.  There was no glimmer of light.  Whit a sigh she secured it inside her backplate and drew her own sword.  Taking another look about she said “I don’t think we are on Baator.”
“We are not;’ Solaris replied, ‘If we were, we would be cut off from Hemator and Stasis, except for your power key.  I believe we are on the Plane of Fire.  Likely we are in a Fire Giant stronghold.  They are immune to the heat, but need air to breathe.  Fortunate, if odd.”  Looking at the dead prisoners, he said: “I think they were powering the portal.  They were slain by the blast.”

“Can you raise them?”, Alara asked, before she realized the scope of the horror.  “A few, but as we are not on a lower plane, their spirits have made their way to the powers they followed.  We should go, while we are immune to the heat, whatever spell was protecting them in life must soon expire.  Neither of us need to add that to our list of experiences.”

They made their way through the massive, rough hewn halls, finding no sign of occupants.  Symbols of Sutyr and other powers were found throughout.  Weapons and small amounts of treasure were scattered; clearly left in haste.  Along with chains; lots of chains.  “Can’t you Plane Shift us back to Habololy, or to the Mount?”, Alara asked.  “No, not out of this place.  For now at least, it is still a divine realm.”

After two careful hours, the exit beckoned.  A long ramp leading down to a “breakwater” against a sea of magma.  In the distance there were other “islands”, some floating others fixed.  As soon as Alara passed the threshold, she staggered back.  The “air” outside was nothing but smoke and soot.

As they looked out over the endless seas, two dozen creatures, with the upper bodies of humanoids and the lower half serpents, pulled themselves out of the lava.  All but one were armed with a spear or trident of glowing iron.  The exception carried an iron staff.  They cautiously slithered up the ramp and began speaking in an alien tongue.  Solaris answered, telling them that he and Alara were travelers.  The staff wielder pointed to Alara, emphatically gesturing with his staff.  “He is offering me safe passage for you and the Gemblade, which he called your ornament.  Safe to say, Stasis’ and Hemator’s reputations don’t precede us.”  Alara prepared for battle and as waves of energy began to emanate from her, the Salamanders formed a semi-circle around them.  Just as it seemed they would charge there was an explosion of smoke and ash, and a red skinned figure appeared.  Its lower half concealed in a cloud of smoke, bare chested and covered in gold and bronze jewelry, it towered twelve feet tall.

â€œAh! My friends, very good! The sultan will be greatly relieved that you are safe.  We could not find you deep inside the fortress.”  Alara and Solaris shared a look of suspicion and confusion.  The efreet for a moment seemed completely unaware of the salamander company, but then looking about, began a stream of, what Alara was sure, was invective and profanity, in the same strange language of the salamanders.  The leader seemed prepared to press his case until the efreet drew out a massive scimitar that caused the air to hiss.  The efreet, with a gesture that clearly indicated his last best offer, pointed into the fortress, and the salamanders slithered in with no further complaint.

“Now! The sultan awaits with your advocates. I am Kerim, your humble servant. Come!”  With no way to cross the magma sea, or breathe for that matter, Alara and Solaris took the efreet’s arms.

part 2

In a sickening cloud of brimstone, they appeared on a massive causeway. Half a mile wide, and miles end to end, it rose fifty feet or more from the magma ocean. All manner of fire creatures, including fiends, fire giants and even a red dragon, headed in each direction. Many cast a curious, even hostile, glance at them as they walked, but none approached. Karim chatted with them, mentioning that the Plane of Fire has only two powers that reside there, but Alara and Solaris could not take their eyes from the sight before them. An enormous city that blotted out the sky and horizon, sitting atop a hemisphere of brass. The city seemed impossibly dense, that the buildings were crushed against each other, but as they drew near it became clear that it was simply a trick of perspective. They passed the great bronze gates and the massive elemental guards saluted Kerim. Inside, the plaza had been cleared, and twenty mephitis, bowing and scraping to Kerim, who kicked one that moved too slowly, rolled out an enormous carpet. “Come! I would be ashamed if you did not see the City of Brass from the sky!” With all aboard the carpet soared into the air. The city was the size of a small kingdom; Hertopowlis made of brass, bronze and gold. As they flew a palace of brass and coal black stone, covered in precious stones and metals, awaited them. They alighted upon an upper entry way and were escorted through the great halls. As they walked a group of steam mephit servants cleaned them, one even re-braiding Alara’s hair.

With a theatric flourish, Kerim opened another towering set of doors to an equally gigantic throne room and proclaimed “Lady Alara, most honored Knight of the White Sword and true heir of Stasis, the Godsword, Bane of the Infernal and Enemy of the Dark Powers, and Lord Solaris, Celestial Steward of Hemator, Lady of Healing, the Redeemer of poor, foolish Habololy; I present the Lord of Flame, the Potentate Incandescent, the Tempering and Eternal Flame of Truth, the Most Puissant of Hunters, Marshall of the Order of the Fiery Heart, the Smoldering Dictator, the Crimson Firebrand, Marrake al-Sidan al-Hariq ben Lazen, Sultan of the Efreet and the City of Brass.”

Before them was another efreet, this one visible from head to toe, even more lavishly appointed and twice Kerim’s size, seated upon a throne of gold that seemed on the edge of molten. Within the hall there were also dozens of efreet, a few salamaders and an uncountable number of mephitis all working on one task or another. The efreet cast a stoic gaze upon them as they approached the throne. Alara and Solaris looked about and knew that if they were not truly guests, they would either die here or be leaving in chains.

As they drew near the throne, the throng parted and Alara breathed a sigh of relief. Standing beside the throne were two men. One she did not recognize, with deep red skin, jet black hair and impossibly handsome features. He was dressed in plate armor, with a battle axe on his back and a symbol of a flaming axe on his tabard. The other she did, an unassuming man of indeterminate age, with pulled back gold hair and matching goatee. He was dressed in a simple but fine white robe, emblazoned with the rampant platinum dragon. The red skinned man came forward and kissed Solaris on both cheeks and Alara’s hand. “Greetings! It is a great honor to meet you, I am Gargal, servant of Girru.”

Before he could continue further, Kerim cleared his throat.
“My lord sultan, behold, these great warriors who, I, your most humble servant, have retrieved from the fortress of the usurper, and delivered into your most auspicious presence.”

The sultan leaned forward, and streams of molten gold dripped to the floor, where mephitis immediately scraped it up. The great efreet’s coal eyes evaluated them for a moment.
“Glad, we are that you survived your time in the fortress. You have our gratitude for defeating the usurper in battle on your world, for it weakens his foothold here. In recognition, we have turned aside every offer, and there were many of great price, to make you guests in another realm. You are fortunate to serve such respected powers, or at least,’ casting his eyes at the white robed man, ‘that your patrons have such respected mentors of their own. You are free to go. Kerim, escort them to the Parapet of Departure.”

As you depart, Gargal bowed and said: “Farewell uncle, my mother sends her love.” The sultan waved him off dismissively.
Kerim, clearly somewhat dejected, led them to a high, flat roofed tower. “Farewell. Perhaps if I am ever summoned to Habololy, I will seek you out before my time is ended.”

In a more familiar experience, though very jarring on this occasion, Gargal delivered them to the bliss of the fields of Mercuria. In the distance, Stasis’ city of Paladia could be seen and near at hand a city of similar size of white adobe crowned with orange roofs.
Gargal said: “Lord Solaris, I can also return you to Hemator’s realm, or you can go into the temple in Paladia. You are welcome here in Gillura if you wish to rest.”
