Summer in the City (Portet that is)
« on: July 26, 2014, 10:21:53 PM »

After the zombie attacks the entire city is quiet for several weeks. Most of the residents stay indoors, even in the low city.  Escalon leaves the morning after the battle but more than thirty Guardians remain.

Ari returns after four days to clear relief by the followers of all the goodly powers and Chartok. Word spreads in the  following weeks that the diplomats have agreed in principal that the lands that once comprised the Scaled Nation shall become a "Protectorate" of the Kingdom of Icefia. No details are released and there is clearly dissension among the elves.

On the 13th day of the fifth month there is a tremendous crack, as loud as summer thunder but low to the ground. Within minutes it is followed by a great rending sound and masses of people make their way to the river banks. The ice that had covered the river for over a year finally breaks apart. The water level of the river is very low and word from the north is that it remains frozen there.  By the  Day of Light the harbor is a mess of small ice plates and the galleon, which had stood immobile in the ice for months, bobs free.

For the constables, patrols seem more tense. There are no attacks in any section of the city but there seems to be less trust than there was before. By the middle of the sixth month there is a consensus among the constables that there are many unfamiliar faces in the low city: Horarians, gnomes and "non scaled" elves.

On the seventh day of the seventh month, during the short night, the constables are on patrol in the dock ward when they hear the distinct sound of the capital ship's ballista firing; not into the city but out to sea. Within minutes the great ship is under sail and moves out into the darkness. Many residents come out to see if any sighting can be made of what transpires but there are no explosions and no ship enters the harbor that night. The following morning the galleon returns, showing a few torn and burned sails but no major damage.  Chartok informs you in a meeting that two warships tried to run the blockade but were driven off after a few hours of maneuver and battle.

On the last day of the month a convoy of ships, twelve transports escorted by two corvettes, frigates and battle cruisers, sail into the harbor. Tons of food and supplies are off loaded and some is distributed by the end of the day.  The crowds are subdued, especially the elves; there is little rejoicing at the bounty. At the end of the day, usually over a glass of wine or ale, the Elven liaisons explain to their counterparts: a lone Icefia galleon immobilized in the ice meant little; six war ships, especially the Eagle cruisers so distinctly Icefian, sailing into the harbor unchallenged means the Scaled Nation is no more.

Have their been any more untimely deaths of scaled elven collaborators by Griffon?

Feel free to post anything you would like to do in the months between where we left off and where we will begin.

All of the Icefians are given leave in the seventh month to visit family and friends.

Robert goes home to visit, and if it is convenient, stops in Cape Tolya.

Are there any encounters we have, or other events in those months that indicate the threat is still around?

The transport stops first in Cape Tolya so you can visit there if you want. You can take another transport from there to Phiam.

More info will be forthcoming but the general answer is very little happens after the arrival of the relief shipments.

Gneetagh continues to train for his eventual entrance into Sword Sainthood.  If there's a chance to visit Brentan Firepeak, I will.  If not, I continue to help out around town to distribute food, teach the children how to fight and read/write other languages, and clean up the general mess from all the damage that occurred during the recent battles.

I also follow up on the encrypted safe houses we were investigating earlier.  Are those criminals still at large, or did everyone flee after the big thaw?

You can return to Phiam to train with Brentan if you wish.

Your efforts to engage with the townsfolk meet with little success. After the arrival of the warships the people, elves, are considerably less inclined to be seen with you or any Icefians.

There is no progress on the investigation during the summer. How would you try to learn if any of your targets have departed?

I check shipping manifests and employee logs of the local dock workers.  I will also ask around at the local pubs about any suspicious activity that may be inconsistent with the changes that took place when the warships arrived.  I also look into rental agreements with the landlords responsible for the suspected warehouses to see if anyone violated their contract or skipped town suddenly.

Does Rob get the impression that he is going to be recalled to the city?

So we'll be picking up ~3 months after the undead attack?

Bryvus volunteers to support the Guardians in whatever official or unofficial way he can. During leave he remains in the city if they are still there.

Are there any wizards among their ranks?

Can someone remind me what our wages are? If I have enough coin, I'll make some scrolls and/or scribe some new spells if I can find another wizard to share a spellbook.

Do you mean among the Guardians or constables?

After the battle the Guardians go undercover and word gets to you that they are avoiding the constables and marines in an effort to gather information from the local population.

There are two other wizards among the constables, neither as competant as you.
