I think we are only 2 1/2 kegs into a 7 keg trip

Dylan reads the book on K'Thow history/customs most of the time he can. Prefer reading in pitch blackness, as the light on the white pages gives him a headache. He'll find a closet/store room where it's dark to read. He's not anti-social about it, but is very happy to absorb knowledge.

Assuming 160 miles per day, if you were proceeding directly to Olan, it would take about two weeks. This is day 1

Ruby also spent a very small amount of coin on appropriate sailing attire while in Cape Tolya. She sells the red dress that she wore to the event now that everyone has seen her in that. She comments that Lyri says wearing a different dress to each event makes a better impression.

Your first night aboard is not restful. The crew works in three shifts and while not raucous it’s not quiet either. When you take the deck the next morning there is nothing but empty ocean in all directions. You can see the two closest frigates with the naked eye and the next pair with a spyglass. Tessa and Tadren have attached a huge kite to the stern and take turns riding it aloft. The captain has allowed it today as you are still in waters technically under Icefian control. Nisoru leads sword instruction for the marines (there are twenty of them) and prayer before the midday meal. There are two chaplains aboard, one a cleric of Stasis the other of Lakius. Both are clearly intimidated by Nisoru.
The crew is roughly 80% human (and supermajority of that Icefian) and most of the remainder are half elves, with a few elves mixed in. The exceptions are a senior marine NCO, named Fortas, a Vass; the ship’s navigator Gaudio, a Nipit; Gullen the master of the artillery, a Plateau Gnome (who is very excited by Lord Tadren and Tessa’s presence) and his apprentice Ruben, a Goblin.

Dylan asks Nisoru " What is the point of the other ships, if Other families want to get involved, why don't we do something else? seems pointless for a army of young nobles and princes to descend on Kthow.. "

(I posted this last night but for some reason it’s gone)
He responds: Diplomacy builds trust and peace; both of which have been absent for a long time. The embassy should be about 70 people when all is done so five ships is appropriate, and safer. As for the two ships that have tagged along I mean to find out what their purpose is. Don’t worry, there will be plenty for you to do, and you are a follower of the Lady of Learning, so this is essentially a pilgrimage for you.

Please show some respect when addressing Grand Master Metakae. Godric shoots Dylan a nasty look, but all you see is his head turn.

This thread got weird.

At the end of the second day the captain warns you that you may want to stuff your ears or just wait to head to your bunks. The crew will be doing a night firing drill, loading firing, reloading and firing again all of the ballista. It will be uncomfortably loud for about 15 minutes.

Sounds like something worth watching.

Ruby does as recommended.

The crew performs the drill, shooting at buoys dropped by the frigates on each side. The captain and Gullen are not completely satisfied and make a third of the crews fire another round. The noise is terrific, dozens of nearly simultaneous shrieks that makes you wonder if they named the cruisers after the sound, as it reminds you of some great bird of prey’s cry.
When you take the deck in the morning there is an obvious change in the crew’s bearing and demeanor. There is less laughter and responses to commands are sharp. Most stations have a sword or spear and bows and crossbows are racked along the gun whales. Gullen and Ruben both have three pistols and Ruben has an enormous double barrel blunderbuss stored at the stern. The captain gives the order to run up the colors and a massive flag with the arms of the 2nd fleet is unfurled from the top mast and the stern castle. You cannot see any of the frigates.
The captain says: “Lord Metakae departed before first light to speak with the captains of the two ships that joined the consort. He will return after midday. We have set a course for Shorioto, an island he needs to visit. We should reach there by dark.â€

Is there any indication that we are expected to join him for this visit, or will we be staying on the ship?

The captain replies: “I think he intends to take a party ashore.â€

Dylan watches the night artillery exercises with his sensitive ears plugged. Remembering a book he read some time back at the college about naval combat, and how cannon where supposedly the more loud placements. He pondering how all the light on deck for the humans to see would make a target for other ships to shoot at. Seems a little silly. The Kingdom should find a crew of more sight enhanced races if it really wants to fight at night. He decides to mention it to the captain.

The captain refers you to Gullen if you want to learn about naval artillery fire.

Uther attempts to make nice with the ship’s mage. Just because we are students of opposing elements doesn’t mean there needs to be animosity between us. I’ll try to engage Sekul in conversation to learn her backstory when she appears to not be busy.

You are part of what is now an 18 person contingent accompanying Nisoru Metakae on a diplomatic mission to Layraedia and Kathow-Tio-Horari.
Who are the others assigned to our group?

She clearly feels an obligation to speak with you as you are a royal but you immediately get the impression that she has a certain awkwardness that has nothing to do with you.
She tells you that she was born on the Plane of Water but that her mother is Icefian. She bears you no I’ll will but Girru is not noted for his tolerance.

I will be introducing them as we go on.
