Any questions about the ship or crew?

The morning that you see the pirates ships (Duo-tio-Shelleshe) is the 8th day of the 10th month (Napay) of 787.

Captain Ispolis - What you learn about him in the week and day day you have known is so far is that he is energetic and easy going, for the captain of a ship.  You have yet to see him cast a spell or wear armor.  The only time you have seen him carrying a weapon is when the squid came near the ship, and he had a small rapier.  He always dresses nicely, although the clothing is not always the finest quality.  He often wears a bandanna.  He speaks several languages well (common, elven, and gnomish at least).  He is nimble and appears to be able to do all of the ship tasks at proficiently, but not expertly.  He speaks with Karven the Navigator and Lander the Prelate more than the others when not on duty.  They appear to have known each other for a while.  He spends time teaching the midshipemen, Chase and Kel, when nothing else pressing is happening.  Every night, he shares a bottle of wine with the officers and one lucky non-officer.

Ship Mage Eric - A young human from Port Talp, his accent is tricky for anyone not used to it.  He sounds like an untraveled Claude, and he is as young as Claude when he started.  He hair is a mop and whatever money he ever had was likely spent learning the magical arts and buying materials to practice it.  He talks of having older siblings and being left with few choices other than to learn magic.  He is forthcoming and friendly, and it worries most that he might be the most effective arcane caster on the ship.  His sailing skills are minimal, but he knows his way around the ship and understands the lingo.  He is of average height and thin, but neither clumsy nor weak.  He can operate a crossbow well enough.  He is most comfortable and spends most of his time with the other Talpans.  He is often looking to help out with basic ship activities even though he is not required.

Master's Mate Thermon - The hulking ship enforcer is either in his sling or walking near Sal the master at arms.  He will talk to anyone who approaches, but answers nothing about his past if asked.  He often just watches the sea from his sling, half asleep.  When called, he comes to help with any heavy task, although with Valdis able to do many of the same things and more able to get around, the need is lessened.  There has yet to have been an instance where his authority has been required.  He has little in the way of belongings, only two shirts that you have seen on board fit him.  He wears sandals, the only crewman you see with that footwear.  Tucked into the deck is both the massive spear and a huge axe.  If he were smaller, he would be a much greater help, and many think he is sad and bored staring into the water.

Some lesser crew members:

The only halfling is Eager, an able seaman.  He is as his name implies.  His does not like the cannon and works hard to make sure he is more needed above deck.

The two Gree are Ritvali and Rodian.  A Seaman and Able seaman respectively.  They are excellent crew and take orders well.  They get along with any of the crew that are serious about their jobs.  Mostly, they stick together, but they seem to take a liking to Run.

The only Vass is Nasisik.  He is but a seaman and while it is hard to tell, you think he is young for a lizardfolk.  He is tall and thin, you could even say lanky.  He swims well.  He too seems to take a liking to Rin; however he and the Gree don't talk at all to each other.

Veronika talks happily with anyone on board...  She mostly talks about fashion and how Talp is such a unique place for fashion with technology and arcane so widely used.  Today she wears tight fitting white cotton top and leather leggings.  She has furry lined heeled boots which makes her look much taller then her 5'6".   Over that she wares what we would describe as a pirates long coat with exaggerated lapels in greens and blacks.  Across the front seams are many gems which anyone with any skill can tell aren't real.  The right lapel has thin outline of what you think might be a very stylistic tree frog made out of those same gems.
She's too easy to talk to and you find yourself telling her things you wouldn't normally tell.  She sweet and helpful around the ship, proving to be nimble, have a great attention to detail, but definitely not a strong sailor.  Jobs she's given get done, sometimes be her, sometimes by a stumbling ship mate that offers their help.

She manages to convince some of the other crew to give her extra space to store her belongings, which are more numerous than most.

On another note, she does have more work than previously thought.  She is in charge of repairing clothing, which as the voyage gets longer becomes more work.

She puts herself in positions many times to force interactions with people to see how things go.. She does all clothing repair from the roof of the forecastle snuggled up in Thermond's hammock sling thing.  She'll read a book leaning against a cannon.. etc.  She's always dressed nice and somewhat provocatively when you run into her.  All clothing repair is done thematically.  If a Carpenter has a new sleeve attached to his shirt, the seam will be a classic dove tail joint re-created in thread.  If a gunner's mate has a threadbare knee, she attaches cannon ball styled knee patch.  While she isn't the most amazing seamstress you've ever seen, she's better then most and takes more time.  Everything you get back is in better shape then we she got it as well as cleaned and ironed.

The petite Rin is a quiet first mate.  She seems to lead instinctively, using her Wisdom more than any practice of the art of sailing or ability to read people.  She garners respect from her clarity of her chosen path and commitment to her goals and in general being a kind person.  She handles herself well in all situations.
She spends most free time in the water. She seems to be connected to the life in the ocean, which gives her comfort.  After a long shift you can see the desire in her face to get back in the water.  You often notice her sleeping on the back of Tsunami as she surfaces to breath.  She eats fish, but never red meats.  She can often be seen eating seaweeds in many different preparations.  Her favorite snack seems to be dried seaweed chips she makes by drying seaweed over the masts of the ship.
She straps her long spear to the main mast of the ship giving herself easy access to the large weapon, but is always seen with her Yumi bow and arrows on hand.  She wears the same Glistening kelp cloak, Penguin themed bracers, fish scale leather armor every day.  For those not used to Hororian physiology the tight fitting armor display of curves is the only hint that she’s not a young boy.  All her equipment is tightly strapped down and streamlined to let her swim freely without worry of losing anything.  Her quiver is unique, as a standard bucket style would be impossible to swim in.  She has a long strap made out of shark hide.  There are 100’s of snaps on it. She places an arrow between each set of snaps and rolls it into a coil.  As she pulls arrows from it the snaps open and give her one arrow at a time.  Pulling from the outside of the roll as the strap uncoils she is able to make it through the entire set of arrows very quickly.
She is happy to talk to anyone but very rarely volunteers any information.  She is often seen telling Veronika “NO” as she tries to dress her in something less practical.

The captain is quietly amused by all of your 'antics'.

Thermon smiles but says nothing.

Helmsman Cheenan - An ice gnome who had a stool built into the deck so he could be a more effective helmsman, he looks out of place because of his oddly burnt skin.  The usually pale white skin of an ice gnome has not taken well to the sea sun in his several years out at sea.  The tops of his ears and his nose are perpetually brown with what everyone assumes is burn.  His hair is thin, long and straggly.  He usually wears a dark blue beanie.  He is always clean shaven to the point where you are not sure if he can even grow facial hair.  He has sharp features arms and legs that are thicker than you would expect for his relatively lean torso.  Despite obvious obstacles, he is by all accounts an excellent helmsman and skilled enough sailor.  He talks in a funny accent but always in the expected sailor vernacular.  He talks to the look-outs, navigator, and the swimmers more than any others.  From the scuttlebutt on the ship, he is a worshiper of Frostine and he has some magic tricks up his sleeve.

Cannon Master Howey - A human Plateauian that is dedicated to cannon function and design.  He is thrilled to be on the ship and be able to see these long barreled, rifled cannon at work.  He is likely in his 20s and by all accounts has had spent a few years at sea.  He has short brown hair, doesn't account for appearance much, and often forgets a meal while working on the cannon.  He talks mostly to the gun crews and is happy there are eight so that he can move to the next one after one gets bored with his conversation.  No one is sure if he is a tinker or a crafter, as he has no other clickers but his in depth knowledge of cannon is such that he sounds like a tinker.

Master Mariner Isyawi - The consensus for best sailor on the Pride of the Rose, he is a middle ages Horarian.  Allegedly he has spent fifteen years at sea plying his trade as a sailor.  It is hard to argue as his rope skills and overall knowledge of sailing as well as his climbing and swimming make him the most well rounded crew member.  He prefers to speak Horarian, and therefore doesn't talk to most of the crew casually.  He does make it clear that his has no love to the Shelleshe and hopes for the success of the mission and the war.  His tanned skin and black hair show his many years at sea, and his worn hands and lined face show years of work.

Claude quickly tries to inventory the materials that he is responsible for on the ship.  During his off times he will speak with the various members of the crew.  He can be seen speaking Gnomish to the helmsman and fluent Horarian to Rin and the Master Mariner.

During this free time he tries to make sure that everyone has what they need...even if they don't know they need it yet.  He offers the usual items to help the crew see farther, hear better, cure hangovers, cleaning oils etc.

He also wants to take the time to speak with his old friend and new ship's Master Valdis.  He will proudly offer Valdis one of his latest potions.  He assures him that even though one just like it turned Rin into an Umber Hulk that the chances of that happening again are nearly impossible..he thinks.

Has there been any discussions on how the crew plans to handle an up close encounter.  Is Valdis responsible for designating any sort of boarding party or assigning duties when it comes to combat?

Valdis is in charge of boarding actions (which the captain has stated he does not want), and boarding action defense.

(Valdis will use his Animal Affinity power to bump his Charisma score)  3

Valdis will take stock of the crew to see:
Once the people with bows and skill with crossbows have been identified, Valdis will rig up 3 floating targets with some spare wood and canvas.  He will then ask Rin and the Gree to take them into the water at the crossbows longest range.  He will then have the crew use the crossbows and their own equipment to see who the best shots are.  He will ask the Gree and Rin to retrieve as many bolts/arrows as possible.

Valdis will have the  targets moved closer in increments to gage the skill of bowmen and crossbowmen at different ranges.

Once their skills have been assessed he will divide them into squads and and run them through firing drills.

For those who have no aptitude for archery, he will organize them into squads and drill them on repelling boarders and cutting grapleing lines

You find that only two non-officer crew members have brought a bow on board.

Everyone can use a crossbow.

There is no one that is an excellent shot on the crew.

Your tests run smoothly, although the results (that the crew is not highly skilled in archery) are not what you had hoped.

Boatswain Travis - The most unassuming of the notable crew, he is an average sized human with brown hair and eyes.  He dressed the part of the sailor and keeps himself in order.  He does nothing to make himself stand out other than to come quickly when called with the ship's log.  He helps out when needed and seems to do a good job and keeping things in order, his primary role on the ship.  He is in his 20s, has had several cruises before this, including one with the captain.  He does not have a distinctive accent.

Rin quietly strings her long Yumi bow and puts displays her considerable skill with her diety's chosen weapon.  Doesn't seem range is much of a problem for her.  She uses her Animal Whistle to command Tsu to retrieve the bolts and arrows which she amazingly has a good bit of experience doing.  Some come up broken, being gentle isn't something a 18K pound whale exceeds at.  The whale clicks and spouts often..seemingly enjoying the work  and every once and awhile a large fish is tossed on deck as well.

Veronika is a completely different tale. She (makes a bluff check) and fumbles at the simple weapon.  She seems barely able to charge the weapon and place a bolt without it falling off. (slight of hand check)  Once pulling the trigger and having the bolt fly haphazardly sideways (dex check).  She blushes and giggles and asks for help .  To a trained eye her dexterity at the task might betray her intention.  As with a strong sailor behind her helping her air her bolts seem to fly try and find their mark (bluff check). Though she isn't as skilled as some, she aims easily and with purpose. Today for target practice she wears a thin long sleeve white sweater with a heavy hide furry short vest.  She has heavy leather bands crisscrossing her body trying to look like a wilderness barbarian.  She wears heavy material blue pants (jeans) crisscrossed with more straps and fuzzy high heels boots.  On her head is a brown furry cylinder hat with her fiery red hair flowing freely from underneath. When she starts shooting she puts blue "war paint" on her face.. she says to look more fierce. (bluff check)

Doctor Garet - One of the crew that commands the most respect is the veteran human sailor Garet.  He is bald and tall and solidly built.  He wears nothing that would possibility impede his movement, even at the risk of being wet or cold.  He wears no symbols and says little that would give away anything about himself.  The crew learns by his actions and knowledge that he has been at sea for a decade and more.  They say is he Plateauian, which he does not correct.  His tactics for healing are mundane but correct.  He helps around the ship when needed and can perform the basic sailor's tasks with some skill.  He speaks mostly to the doctor's mate and to those who need his services.

Master of the Forecastle Antwan and Master of the Tops Parker - these two humans are good friends and friendly to everyone else.  They are competent at their roles, and seem to have been shipbound for five years or so each, most of that time serving on the same ship.  They are both in the early twenties and full of life and energy.  They talk to anyone who approaches them.  Gabriel is rubbed the wrong way by their seeming lack of proper order and discipline, although they obey orders and get things done reasonably.  They take and make bets during Valdis' archery drills.

Victoria walks over.. seeming drawn to the oddly handsome 8 fingered alchemist and the thickly rugged ships master by the word "sail" and she smiles sweetly at then.  "Isn't that something you should be able to answer.. you know.. being an alchemist and all?  I could weave some of your mysteriously amazing powders or materials into the sales.  And I must tell you.. Navigator Karven - The oldest looking crew member, and oldest human crew member.  He has dark hair, not particularly well kept and down to his shoulder.  His face is worn from a life in the sun.  His clothes were once well made but are showing their age.  He wears dark blue and dull grey colors all the time.  He speaks about the sea if asked and routes and stars, but little else of interest.  He is well spoken and can expound on navigation and his areas of interest while making them seem interesting and relevant to each crew member.  By accent you cannot tell where he is from.  You have seen him play the drum with the others and have heard that he can cast some spells.  You have not seen him carry a weapon and he does not participate in the archery drills.

Master at Arms Sal - A human in his 30s, he is the boss of the hulking Thermon.  A gruff man, he is often seen with a pipe.  The weed he smokes creates a strong smell that bothers those with delicate senses.  He has been ordered to only smoke above deck.  He is the veteran of many cruises.  He is a man of average size, but is made to look small by his mate.  By all reports, he is the best dagger fighter on the ship.  He does not talk much to the lighter hearted of the crew; the bards and the fairer races. He is more often crude than anyone else, and no one makes Veronica and Rin feel more uncomfortable than him.

Prelate Lander - A human who appears as if in his 20s, by the respect granted him and his knowledge you feel as if he is much older.  He is clearly a cleric of Habastly, which is made clear by his long brown hair and modest robes and sandal dress.  He is rarely seen without his spear, which he leans on as a staff and which is rough handled.  He is nearly six feet tall and has the walk and movements of a fit man.  He is easy to talk to, but not chatty.  He helps the doctor when asked and is considered a blessing by the crew because of his ability to create water.  He does not often preform sailor's tasks and when asked he never gives a clear answer as to how long he has been at sea.  His accent does not give any clues to where he is from, although the lack of heavy accent does rule out a few places.

"Well...I uh...of course I could do that.   Let me think...cooling gel might work but that's more for skin.  Hmmm..Fire bane.  Thats it!  No..that's more for skin too and burns like crazy if you don't wash it off soon enough.  Greasy too.  Ahhh..Devils soap.  That might work.  We would have to re-apply every hour though. No that won't do."

At this point Claude is definitely having more of a conversation with himself than with anyone around him.  He starts digging around in his pouch as he wanders away from Victoria.  He is mumbling  something about 20 ways to make fire so how hard can it be to make something not burn.

"I can just make it harder.  Like iron and then it can't burn..right?  No no too heavy.  Blackout oil?  That's not bad.  Not bad at all.  I would need a lot of it.  That works..oh wait..that's more for something once it's already ON fire.  Think Claude."

He seems to come out of his trance for a moment and says "Like my Grandfather always said..If there's a solution search till you find it.  If there be none then never mind it!"  With that he just wanders off.

Gnearly Gnoghitall, the ship's carpentry apprentice, is a 3' tall, white haired, black eyed, pink skinned Tinker Gnome.  He is very focused on his work and you all notice that he is exceptionally gifted in his crafts.  He is an expert fisherman, but even more impressive is his skill with boat repair, engineering, and design.  Even when not working, he tends to walk around wearing a leather smock and tool belt.  He fishes with a spear and fights with a light crossbow.  He is reasonably sociable, but not a very gifted conversationalist.  He speaks with anyone who engages him in conversation, but tends to drift off into alternate topics involving boats or exotic creatures.  Overall, an asset to the crew and very reliable individual.

At one point during the first couple days of our journey, you notice the captain exit his quarters with a handful of senior officers.  He appears to be smirking and moderately amused.  When the crowd clears, you all see standing behind him a 5' tall, silver eyed, silver haired, ebony skinned Drow male.  He is absolutely majestic looking, although when making direct eye contact, it becomes clear that there is a distinct air of sadness in his eyes.  His hair is lustrous and wavy and nestled under a beautifully designed feather cap.  He's wearing a navy blue puffy shirt with wide lapels.  The shirt is wide open at the v-neck exposing his hairless, chiseled chest.  He has matching pantaloons.  His boots are finely crafted black leather and he has a matching belt and vest draped over the shirt.  The vest appears supportive enough to aid in battle.  He has silver cufflinks that match his eyes and a silver pin shaped like a tidal wave affixed to his lapel.  He has a rapier on his hip and a light crossbow across his back.  He steps around the captain and addresses the crew.

"Forgive my initial deception my new friends, but it was necessary to gain passage aboard this fine vessel."  With that comment, he tips his hat to the captain.    "Allow me to properly introduce myself.  I am Chase Stillwater.  As Midshipman, I will be fair and honest, but firm on ship rules.  As an adventurer, I represent the eternal flame of the immortal spirit.  I understand that some of you may be uneasy with someone of my...genetic composition...but rest assured, I'm here to help.  I am attuned to the weather patterns of this world and can weave my magic to help us on our journey, wherever it may take us.  Our enemies will quake with fear in our presence and they will know the fury of the sea.  If ever you feel down and out, be certain that Tfop will guide us to victory.  He has guided me out of isolation and slavery and will surely be there to aid us here on the open seas.  I look forward to our journey together."

With that, he bows and hands the floor back to the captain.

Victoria raises her hand as the group disperses.. " Is it true"  and nods " that once you go black.. you never come back?"  It's clear she trying to lighten the mood, but it's also clear that not being around a group of women this quip isn't as funny as it should be.

I thought her name was Veronica?  In any case, Chase gazes at her and responds...

"That, my dear, is as true a statement as ever uttered.  If you play your cards right, perhaps one day you'll find out."

He winks at her and looks to the crowd for a reaction.

"I think some entertainment is in order."  He smiles widely then gracefully makes his way over to Veronica/Victoria and gently, yet firmly, grabs her by the waist.  He locks eyes with her then begins to whistle a haunting rendition of a classic waltz.  He takes the lead and guides her through an extremely enchanting dance routine all the while playing to the crowd and pandering to their glares to lighten the mood.

The crew roars and cheers at the dance.

However, later the captain with Valdis and Rin, has a stern talking to both of you.  "That fraternization can't be allowed here.  There are two females trapped on a ship of over 60 males.  If anything like that happens again, Sailmaker, you will be dropped off at the next port wherever that is.  Midshipman, set an example and from now on demonstrate restraint and respect to our female crew."

"Understood Captain.  Please forgive my outburst, but I felt it necessary to quell the wave of negative emotions spreading through the crew at that moment.  I will be more mindful of my responsibilities in the future."

"And to you Madam Veronica, I meant no disrespect.  Thank you for indulging me this evening.  Your free spirited nature will go a long way to boost morale on this vessel."

He bows and nods to Veronica, Rin, Valdis, and the Captain.

The captain continues, "I understand both of your motives, and that is why there will be no discipline actions taken this time.  But there will not be leniency if it happens again."
