Title: News of the City
Post by: Asinjin on May 18, 2013, 02:32:29 PM
I will be posting happenings in the city that you hear about either in the paper or through word of mouth.

23rd Leenot 786 - Report from the canton of Barthelem - workers recently uncovered a clicker buried from the time of the War of Technology.  While excavating for construction of a new row of homes, the workers hit something.  After examination, they determined they should call in some experts.  The experts concluded it was an old clicker and cordoned off the area so they could better dig out the clicker.  Citizens are advised to remain clear of the area until the work is complete.

This story appeared in the Vabun Times and the Twin Cities Post.

26th Leenot 786 - A rare brazen daylight armed robbery took place at Exotic Buds in Mazarg canton.  The assailant entered when no one else was in the shop and demanded goods and coin from the owner, Herman Sfop.  The robber used a small blade and was in the shop for about a minute.  Passersby saw him flee the shop laden with bags.  He is described as a short human with average skin tone and no facial hair.  He was dressed in typically clothing for the weather; pants, shoes, shirt.  If any one has any information about this crime, please go to your local constable.  The owner is offering a reward for the return of his merchandise, unused.

1st Mafeeti 786 - Today, Raygen the Liberator is due to arrive in the city.  His last appearance came a year ago and speculation is that his arrival precipitated the downfall of the notorious Barot's Guild.  Although some believe that his latest pilgrimage to Port Talp has to due with another guild, it is more likely that he has come to participate in the not so well kept secret conference to discuss the city's possible entry into the Coastal Sea War.  If that is his reason, it should not be doubted that his presence will mean that the city is going to be going to war on the side of the Republic; an action whose consequences cannot be predicted.

4th Mafeeti 786 - In the canton Beledam, yesterday, a memorial service was held for Merte Klamont, hero of the War of Technology of the 250th anniversary of his death.  The man of words saved the city untold horror with his words, preventing the Tinkocracy from engaging Port Talp and allowing it to go mostly unharmed.  His death, at the hands of tinker extremists had the opposite effect the killers wanted, convincing the leaders of the Tinkocracy that the city did not need to be attacked.  Esteemed merchant and the founder of Rousal Cosmetics, Livianna Rosaul, gave a talk about the man.  She is the only living person known to have talked to him.

6th Mafeeti 786 - The Tower of Time was destroyed by an unknown assailant.  By the time the powers came to depend the tower, the destruction was complete, although the battle that ensued was monstrous in scope.  Chaos magic on a scale not seen since the time of Bart reigned down.  The Marshall herself arrived to deal with the problem and was able to drive off whoever it was that attacked the tower.  Before her valiant effort, a dozen wizards were killed, including most of the Chronomancers.  (note that the article is much longer, but I will only go into detail if any of the rogues has a particular interest).

This appeared in The World Beyond, and is listed as a story from Iott.

Max wonders aloud: Wouldn't it be easier to just call it a clock? I mean its not actually made of time right? And can't the "time wizards" just fix this by going back in time and be better prepared? Whose in charge down there, these things are easy to fix.  What's a chronomancer?

Any articles dealing with the decision to enter the war ?

Two papers that you see (note that most aren't daily, some aren't distributed near you, and some don't report local news).

From the Ten Minutes: "City Leaders decide to enter Coastal War on side of Destroytian Republic.  Measures to be taken yet to be announced.  Look out for tricksters trying to take advantage of the war.  No draft is in effect.  No taxes have been levied."

From the Pom Daily: "Yesterday it was announced at various public forums that the leaders of our city have decided to take us to war with the Horarians.  The decision was a laborious one that only came to a conclusion with the events of rogue Horarians who used slaves to bring ore into the city to sell.  The emotion of that incident from last week has allowed the leaders to bring enough pressure to those that had held out against war to force their hand in voting for war.  In the days and weeks ahead, expect to see taxes and regulations, which will fly in the face of the tenants of freedom that is the excuse for entry into this war."

7th Mafeeti 786 - Tomorrow begins the week long annual festival of music hosted by the college of Port Talp.  Mae Lyn Jiron, renowned cellist, who has been in the city performing will be performing.  Although she is the most renowned musician to be joining the festival this year, she is not alone.  The Student Choir and Orchestra of the Academy of Music and Song in Amansky will be in attendance.  Halfling weathersinger, Hermly Stormbreaker, will be performing.  The cost is the same as last year, 1 silver per person per day.  Some performances have an additional cost.

12th Mafeeti 786 - The majority of cantons on the tech side of the city passed new regulations regarding the use of water through the piping system.  These restrictions will make sure the water is cleanly and potable.  The move has been opposed by the leaders of the mage side, who do not want to spend the time and coin to update their already outdated water systems.  Despite their threats and opposition, the counselors and block captains of most of the tech side cantons joined together and passed these regulations.  Thanks to the mayor and the duke for their help in these new regulations.

14th Mafeeti 786 - This story comes from the prison in Draguig.  Last week, a prisoner attempted a murder suicide.  The prisoner's name is being kept confidential, but reports of the event, a rarity in the prison, have come to light.  The event will again raise debate over the type of magics keeping the prisoners in control and also the stance on capital punishment.

15th Mafeeti 786 - Fire lit the area miles south of the city early yesterday.  Our Liberator Raygen and the Maker of Kings Aesculos intercepted agents of Sutyr trying to reclaim a Horarian pirate Tyradin that had fled our fair city.  A gang of Horarians had sheltered him for days and were handing him off to the agents of Sutyr who had traveled long and far from Baenrl.  The villains were confronted and told to surrender.  Some, knowing their predicament, likely knowing who stood against them, surrendered or fled.  Others, the powerful agents of Sutyr, fought the servants of good and freedom, Raygen and Aesculos.  The battle was explosive and raged for many minutes.  Finally, our heroes, with Tfop and Stasis blessing, vanquished the tyrants.

16th Mafeeti 786 - Tash Tash shipping has threatened to close it location in Port Talp if the city continues on its path to war with Kathow-tio-Horari.  Owner says that it will take only one Horarian death caused by the city's involvement for him to close his business.  Tash Tash currently the least expensive means of shipment and travel to much of Kathow-tio-Horari.

17th Mafeeti 786 - The Festival of Music came to a close with a marvelous performance by Mae Lyn Jiron and Hermly Stormbreaker.  The two brought the rain down literally for a brief time and heating up the stage with a fabulously choreographed routine.  The Horarian made one more plea for peace before she left the stage to thunderous applause.  The mood was a happy one tinged with apprehension, as the majority in attendance expressed disagreement with the city's recent announcement.

20th Mafeeti 786 - Last week, analysis began of the Beauon Estate in the Violet canton.  The estate finally fell into city hands one year after the owners disappeared.  No heirs could be found in the intervening time.  The estate, which has a value of over 2 million gold coins, has been the object of much arcane and divine speculation.  Investigators from several organizations have begun with the gates, which are magically fortified and have yet to be crossed.  The Beauon family, which had lived in Port Talp for over a century, were known for their ability to infuse plants with all manor of magic.  Their business assets which did not reside on the estate will be auctioned of next month.

Here is a story from Ayva's father that she relays to you.

"When I was very young, your grandfather tried to get into business with them, so he did lots of research.  He saw opportunity and profit.  He talked about it for weeks and weeks, trying to figure out how to make coin and make a deal.  Unfortunately, he was never able to get it done.  Too many problems.

They came to the city, two Nipits, male and female, from Amansky.  They had a business in plants, and started to sell their brand to the local alchemists.  They bought land, at the time outside the city limits, grew some, and sold it.  They knew what they were doing.  Clerics of Habastly and the elves didn't like them.  There was something about them was was off putting.  Eventually, we all found out what it was.  They mixed magic into the plants.  They grew faster and better.  Not natural, is what the clerics said.  Immoral, is what the elves complained.  But dad didn't care, he was going to make coin.  By the time he figured out a way, it was too late.  He had been warned, and at this time he didn't make the rules, to steer clear of them.

They are an odd lot.  The two Nipits had three children, but no grandkids.  They adopted a number of humans, elves, and nipit orphans.  Everything was happy on the estate, which by the time I was your age was a fabulous place.  They charged admission to come and see the topiary, that's how fine it was.  Can you imagine, charging for that, what a deal.  We have it just to keep up appearances, but they can charge for it, or could.  The kids all joined the business.  They went of trade missions for many years at a time.  If not for the scrutiny of the clerics and elves, their company would be a major player.  But they aren't, second tier, not first."

and here is word on the street

"So the family has not made many friends.  They annoy the Habastlys and the elves.  They worry the Smofarfs and the purists.  They have always been into taboo mixings, experimental drinksm yadda yadda yadda.  But recently, favor turned against them.  Someone had them dealt with.  Soon all of their belongings are going to the city.  A Big payday for those in government.  The elimination of a nuisance to their enemies.  I can't wait until the auction."

I will try to find out what I can bout the estate and where the items are being stored.  Maybe we can get our hands on some of them.

12th Napay 786 - Skorzee Island dispute rages again.  After the announcement by the leaders of Port Talp that they would be joining the war effort on the side of the Republic of Destroyt, it was inevitable that they near century old dispute would raise its head.  The island, once only big enough for a man to stand on, but now large enough for a village of one hundred, sits within sight of the well used trade route between the mainland and Ekarude.  It was originally claimed by no one, but when it reached a certain size and usefulness, it was claimed by Magenthia, whose claim was later backed by the other city states of the Main Continent.  The Horarians disputed that claim, and held that it has been in their territorial waters all along.  The dispute went away and returned several times, with each conflict ending in a pay off.  Now, the Horarians are at it again, and this time claim that they will defend the island from any visitors.  Any that arrive will be assumed to be invaders.  The islands resident have not been contacted for comment.

Can Enzo go? I'd like to add a gorgon to his polymorph list.

23rd Baston Sun 786 - News from the Great Halfling Forest is that the Lord of Scalehome and his fey allies have conquered the Fellos Estate.  The battle lasted several days, during which the halfling put up a valiant fight as is expected from the legendary defenders of the forest.  Even with their orcish allies arriving to aid them, the Halflings could not stand against the might of Scalehome.  Commander Ellic was overheard saying, "We shall return." as he fled the estate.

1 Trest 787 - The efforts by a local company and the town of Grimhold are fully underway to reclaim the lands of the entity once known as the skull lord.  Anyone interested in joining the effort, where pay is in reclaimed land, is encouraged to go to Grimhold soon.  Once winter comes, the efforts will slow for the year.  So far, only token undead resistance has been encountered.

How long does it take for news to reach Port Talp and get printed?  In other words, how much time has passed since the Plateau campaign and this article?

How long does it take for news to reach Port Talp and get printed?  In other words, how much time has passed since the Plateau campaign and this article?

This article is printed at the beginning of the 5th month, while the last plateau season began about a month and a half earlier.  This article is printed before the end of that season when the clerics go on crusade.

The time in between the event occurring and being printed varies.  Sometimes based on the time it takes for the events to be known, other times based on the interest or desires of the printer.

Unless the article explicitly states a time, the people of Port Talp have to make their own judgement about when the events occurred.  This can often depend on your opinion of the paper.  That is a lot easy for the stories about events nearby, which the last two stories I posted being two exceptions from the two papers that report news outside the city.

For this article in particular, no date is given.  The general perception and the expected time frame for news from the plateau is ten days to two weeks of delay.

27th Leenot 787 - This year's haul of Deep Blue Crabs was at an all time low for summer.  Never Before have we seen such poor crabs.  Likely, the Horarians are up to some treachery and are the cause of this.  (included with the short article is a overdone picture of a Horarian with a net scooping up lots of blue crabs out at sea and a small coastal city on the horizon)

28th Leenot 787 - Yesterday, the Sailor's Guild blocked access to several piers in Belsun.  They claimed that the owners of the piers are in fact Horarians and are in violation of city rules regarding sailor safety.  As no ships were docked, there were no delays, but the sailors' guild promises to remain until the issue is settled.

This is posted in many of the papers as well as posted around the city.

It is reported in numerous papers that the Mayor and other city leaders are meeting with the Marshall of Iott in Port Talp in mid-Wavery, the 4th month.  This news does not appear to have been leaked from an inside source, but officially announced by the powers that be.
