Feel free to pick up where we left off
-
Do we get time off after our battle?
Are we fully healed by constable clerics?
DO they ask that we follow up the investigation since we were involved?
-
Do we get a full report on the last time anyone has seen a group of wugs in Phiam?
-
Don't forget, we need to get to the Stormmoon estate quickly in the morning, so we can track the cook.
I sleep the minimum to get my power points back!
-
Once we are not in earshot of anyone but the four to six of us, I say,
"What is our best guess? That Lord Stormmoon took on a lady Charlene?
He possibly paid her with the gem.
The cook was either in on the arrangement or simply saw her come or go with the Lord.
Falce became jealous at the arrangement, that his 'girl' was seeing Lord Stormmoon. He contacted his former or still employers, the Onice. They killed Stormmoon on his behalf. Or they gave him the means to kill Stormmoon.
She was killed because she figured out the connection between Falce, Stormmoon, and the Onice.
Falce went into hiding to avoid being used to unravel the plot to kill Stormmoon, either to simply save himself to to prevent the Onice from being implicated."
-
"Maybe. I'm more inclined to think that Stormoon started seeing Charlene and that is what pulls him out of his misery. Possibly the cook introduced them or had a hand in their meeting, at the very least saw them together. This would have been around the time that Charlene would have been working for the Lady Luxuries. Either Stormoon, Charlene, or the both of them together stumble upon something there that someone, possibly these Onice's, didn't want them to see and they take out Stormoon to silence Charlene. They make the death public knowing that people will gossip and the news will reach her ears. She gets spooked and tells her estranged boyfriend, Falce, everything and that she wants to get out of the city. He has a history of theft from those he works with, so he likely swipes the gem from the Onice's and gives it to Charlene to pawn for gold. Bad move because they really want it back and hunt her down and kill her to get it, after questioning her about how she got it. They make her death look like an accident so there's no further investigation."

Assuming you have this conversation after you are healed but before you speak with the watch commander, who is summoned from his home, the sergeant looks very nervous as you finish. "All we have right now is a theory that fits the facts. We still don't know where Falce is or if he is even alive. He doesn't seem the type to be able to pull something like this murder off and we have no evidence that he had the kind of pull with the Onice to have them carry it out.
-
The sergeant says "Hopefully it goes without saying we can't allege that one of the Kngdom's most esteemed subjects was consorting with prostitutes and got murdered because of it without hard proof."
-
"I'm just guessing here. Just coming up with possibilities."
-
The sergeant says "Hopefully it goes without saying we can't allege that one of the Kngdom's most esteemed subjects was consorting with prostitutes and got murdered because of it without hard proof."
"I would think, by now, you would know that we..." Ularik looks at Brevis, "...most of us don't have doorknobs for brains. Besides, just because Stormoon was seeing the girl doesn't mean he was bedding her. He could have seen her like a daughter, or the daughter of one of the other families in the city. Hells, she might have been related to him for all we know at this point. We aren't going to begrime his name on a mere hunch."
-
"There is also no evidence that he was paying her. He may have been seeing her more traditionally."
-
There are lots of smart people with no discretion. While it would be nice if he was not paying her, assuming he knows her at all, that seems unlikely given what we know of her. We need to get to Falce through her and since she's dead that means someone who knows her; customer, friend or employer.
-
We should probably withhold the speculation and wait until we have enough evidence to tell the story. We need to remain unbiased, do we not?
-
"We are allowed to speculate among ourselves, are we not?"
-
I believe the cook just had been one of Charlene's customers. As solicitation is illegal, he would be nervous. Falce is still the key.
-
" So our course is still the same. Once we finish up here, we bring the cook in for more questioning."
-
"Yes, I think so. Since she was taken to the shrine of Dedestroyt, can we assume that she was not a faithful person? Or would it be worth our time to show this to the clerics in charge of the shrines and temples. Hoping they remember her from services."
-

From your conversation with the cleric of Dedestroyt efforts were made to identify her faith before she was sent to the potter's field. It does not mean she did not have a faith.
-
Did those efforts include going and talking to each of the possible temples or shrines?
-
Yes a description and sketch were sent to all the shrines and temples.
-
"Can we look into where the gem may have come from? Are there gem merchants in the city?"
-
"Can we look into where the gem may have come from? Are there gem merchants in the city?"
You may have missed that part of the conversation with the Knight of the White Sword; the gem is from Baeneral and was never sold here in Icefia.
-
I knew it was from Baenrl. I missed that it had never been sold in Icefia. Does that mean that it also never changed hands other than from Charlene to the pawn shop?
-
No it clearly was passed to he somehow but not from any legitimate place of purchase.
-
So it was smuggled into the city.
We should go back to the Downed Bed and see if there are any ladies that have recently left the employ of the Lady Luxuries that we might be able to talk to without having to deal with the other employees of that place.

Norman replies: I think you got hit a bit hard. Cobus came at us because he didn't want us bothering the Bed. I for one don't want to be on his bad side. Let's see if we can get the info from him or maybe the dock ward constables we talked to; we never went back to meet them.
-
When I said go back to the Downed Bed, I was thinking more of we should talk to Cobus.

It's Down as in the feathers.

Good to note.

Unrelated to the case, Rob asks the other, including the sergeant, "Is there any chance that the chosen and the wugs are allied with the scaled elves? Could the war be causing these strange attacks?"
-

The question about the Chosen is in vogue at the moment. The more conspiratorial think the elves could have paid or encouraged the attacks. The more level headed see two problems with that: the Chosen are a bigger threat to the elves and are often in conflict with them on the northern border of the Scaled Nation. The Wug attack has just happened so there is no opinion but it is unheard of to find Wug in Icefia except in the far Southwest between Fallingleaf and Pinceer.
-
Can I make a Knowledge: Religion check to know who the god of the Wugs is?
-
After the recent news, is there a sense that the war is about to come to an end. Although Phiam is so far away, it may not have an impact.
How much to get a magical message sent to Cape Tolya?
-

Loomashyn is most common and consistent with what you found.

How much to get a magical message sent to Cape Tolya?
After news of the blockade most believe the war will end in the spring. Everyone know there will be no fighting in the dead of winter.
Depends on: 1)what you mean by magical- sending? 2)Who is sending? 3)Who is receiving?
-
I want to send a message to my uncle in Cape Tolya to see how things are going there. Specifically, I want to know about views on the war and the possible appearance of Wugs or Chosen.

Your options for a sending are limited. There are no wizards (or sorcerers) of sufficient power in the city offering spell services. That leaves you with clerics. Who do you go to and with which power do you identify yourself when asked?
-
Before I go, I ask Ularik, "What blessings do you know of that could get a message there?"
-
"A 'Sending' would work. I can not cast such a spell, but the High Cleric at the temple of ArsurAny'odel is of sufficient power."
-
"How much do you think that would cost? Can you get me a discount? Are there any other spells that would do?"
-
"You'd probably have to make some sort of donation to the temple, Other than that I do not know. I am sure if you mention me he will help you. If you need a written introduction, I can supply you with that as well."
-
So what is our next course of action? Show the picture around and try to determine Charlene's actions on her last days.
-
"I thought our next action was to bring in the Cook. We've determined that he knows 'something' and it's our only real lead at this point. We could try to cultivate further leads, but I think we should follow up with the Cook first and foremost. I say we bring him in tomorrow, as long as we have a quiet place to question him."
-
After a hot meal the clerics of Gnarion heal all of you. I don't recall anyone missing a save?
The following morning you are not allowed into the assembly room. A more experienced constable tells you all of the sergeants as well as your watch commander and the commanders of the other northside stations have been inside with the first deputy, a marine officer and Lady Goldpath, the Knight and council woman you met, for several hours.
You and the other constables who are expected to go on duty are joined by constables from the other watch stations. The first floor fills to capacity and beyond before the door opens some 15 minutes later. You are then all ordered inside.
-
Do we know where are the victims of the Wug attack are? Has anyone been assigned to interview them?
As the crowd assembles, I casually ask around to try to get a feel of how much people know about what happened last night.
-
Are there plans to track down the last one?
-
Most of the constables are talking about the attack. Not surprisingly there are a variety of stories circulating, most involving some alliance of the Wug and Chosen. The victims are being cared for at the shrine of Gnarion and you do not know if they have been interviewed yet.
Once inside the room it is too crowded to sit; the first deputy and the three watch commanders are standing at the front of the room. The first deputy has a breastplate with a fur lined coif at the neck and a bastard sword. The watch commanders look very uncomfortable.
The first deputy begins: Deputies, it is time we take the fight to these enemies. It is no less than our sacred duty while our glorious armies are suffering night and day at the front to protect their homes and families. As both the Chosen and the Wug have for reasons unknown selected this part of his majesty's fair city to commit their evil deeds I have decided this is where we will make our stand. I have divided you into two groups. One will hunt the Chosen, the other the Wugs. Your sergeants will give you your assignments. All deputies are expected to draw lethal weapons from the armory until this threat has ended. All current investigations are hereby suspended until further notice.
Dismissed.
-
Turning to our group: "Did I miss something? Have the Chosen actually committed a crime, or are we tracking them down merely because their presence is suspicious?"
-
Also, I ask our sergeant if he knows who has been assigned to interview the Wugs and their victims.
-
Spellcasting logistics question: does the constabulary provide spell components used in the line of duty? Not an issue now, but they will start getting more costly, and 1.5 gc/week isn't going to pay for much.
And how about access to spellbooks and materials to copy spells? There is a financial burden to bear being a wizard, is there a reimbursement plan offered, or does everything come out of personal funds?

Only inexpensive ones. You have discovered the primary reason there are very few wizard constables. Same for the books.
-
Any other wizards at this watch station? Besides Ramsis.
-
Also, I ask our sergeant if he knows who has been assigned to interview the Wugs and their victims.
Sgt. Windbourne comes to find you after the assembly breaks up. He tells you that you have been selected to go after the Wug. The captured Wug has not answered any questions but clerics listening using a comprehend languages or tongues spells have heard it muttering about the dead, there being no hope and how they were foolish to remain in this frozen land. The family has been interviewed but have little to offer. They were returing home from the market when the Wug attacked from below.
-

There is an investigator named Marcus. He is little more experienced than you.

Is there a transcript available for review so we can see the specifics?
-
Talking to the group, not the crowd, Robert says, "This doesn't seem like a good idea. The army is better equipped to deal with this. We're constables. Bar fights, thefts, investigation. Not repelling a covert invasion."
-

No. You are given notes from the Sgt.
-

The Sgt. looks uncomfortable. "The marines and Lady Goldpath searched the tunnel last night. It ends in a series of caves 10 miles north of the city, probably below the fens. No one is happy about this but we have our orders."
-
"Orders are orders. Do we have anyone in our ranks that knows how to fight the Wugs? Do we have anyone that knows the fens well?"
-
Is there any more info on what dead the wugs are referring to? Their dead? Those missing from the potter's field?
Where's the potter's field in reference to the fens?
-
"Orders are orders. Do we have anyone in our ranks that knows how to fight the Wugs? Do we have anyone that knows the fens well?"
I guess the army is busy with the scaled kingdom. Seems both the Chosen, and Wugs would be a military operation. Why not just collapse the connecting cave. I can check on it weekly to see if they have dug it out.
-
Uleric looks around the room, then says to our group, "The military is off fighting the war, now the Constables are told to go chase Chosen and Wugs. Sounds like someone is emptying the city."
-

Where's the potter's field in reference to the fens?
The potter's field is between the city and the fens, about 3 miles north.
-
"This sounds worse by the minute."
"Aren't the fens frozen?"
-
"This sounds worse by the minute."
"Aren't the fens frozen?"
Yes they should be mostly frozen. Some are fed by underground springs so their might be places where they are still wet.
-
Uleric looks around the room, then says to our group, "The military is off fighting the war, now the Constables are told to go chase Chosen and Wugs. Sounds like someone is emptying the city."
If they do intend to send me.. the weaponless one.. after the Wugs I'll be able to check back on the city as needed while on your journey. I just wish I had more inner strength to do it more often. I might be useless in a fight by the time we get there.
-
"Aren't there hunters and rangers that would be better suited for this? I am not trying to shirk my duty I just don't think we're the best for this task. If we are the only available, then so be it."
-
"Aren't there hunters and rangers that would be better suited for this? I am not trying to shirk my duty I just don't think we're the best for this task. If we are the only available, then so be it."
Sgt. Windbourne tells you: "they have called for hunters and any retired rangers or soldiers to aid in the hunt. We expect every squad will have one. Lady Goldpath has also sent a call to the Knights headquarters in Messada for aid. I have the impression that she is not very happy we are doing this."
-
Did we get xp yet?
What is the exact date now (in game)?
"Does anyone have a theory about where the Wugs came from? They aren't native to Icefia."

"Does anyone have a theory about where the Wugs came from? They aren't native to Icefia."
In order: no, the 20th of the first month and many.
-
What percentage of the constabulary is being assigned to the hunt?
-
What are some of the many theories?
-
What percentage of the constabulary is being assigned to the hunt?
Less than 10%. Two shifts of the five north watch stations.
-
What are some of the many theories?
Primarily that some outside power (Scaled Elves, Chosen, Pirates) have imported th Wug to raise havoc. Some, not well educated, believe the Wug swam or crewed a ship here from the main continent. Finally there are those that Loomashyn or Frostine or Compture or Amat transported them here by magic.
-
We ever find out where that tunnel under the Frostine shrine goes?
-
We ever find out where that tunnel under the Frostine shrine goes?
The tunnel was completely blocked.
-
Did it lead in the same general direction as the Wug tunnel?
That seem to be a lot of secret tunnels under the city.
-
I thought the city's engineers were working on opening it up?
-
What do the notes say specifically about the Wugs' mutterings about the dead?
-

They were unable to excavate more than a few feet. It went straight down too far.
-
What do the notes say specifically about the Wugs' mutterings about the dead?
Just that the Wug was using the article the instead of describing something as dead.
-
Do any of you need arms or armor?
Sgt. Windbourne tells you to report at the normal time tomorrow and be prepared for a week or more in the wilderness or underground.
-
I do not need any arms or armor.
What could we bring that the constables wouldn't provide?
-
I do not need any arms or armor.
What could we bring that the constables wouldn't provide?
You need to decide what supplies you want, keeping in mind you are not seasoned adventurers but simple watchmen.
-
Uleric requests the following:
- 2 weeks worth of rations
- Sturdy pony or small horse
- 4 small barrels of oil
- extra torches
- a bolt of canvas
- any extra healing potions or scrolls that the constables can spare

A pony is not an option underground. You might be able to get a work dog but it would not carry much and it can't pull a cart in the tunnels either. Everyone will be issued a healing potion. The bolt of canvas would be very heavy- 150lbs or more. You can get clay jugs of oil, a gallon, but they are 10lbs each.
-
Robert takes the time to write a letter and give it to the messenger to deliver to Messada. He will ask for whatever the others ask for that he can carry.

The pony was more form Uleric to ride. He's sloooooooooow. Using it as a pack animal was a secondary bonus. Instead of the canvas, Uleric will just request 2 uniforms worth of old cloth/rags.

Do the leaders of this expedition anticipate that we will be underground most of the time, or above ground?

Do the leaders of this expedition anticipate that we will be underground most of the time, or above ground?
They don't appear to have any idea.
-
This is where we will begin tomorrow:
The constables are all assembled in their squads of 6-10. You are joined by a young man, 20 at most, missing an eye and an ear, named Damien. He is a hunter from the northwest of the city, beyond the dwarf town of Foothold. Most of the men and the few women have chain or ring mail with a rare breast plate or set of banded mail. Some have personal weapons that look like they have seen real use; army issued long swords and marine short swords are common. Others look like they are holding a weapon other than a mace or baton for the first time; swords and spears with the city crest, most unused are the majority. No one looks happy.
The Sergeant is approached by a clerk and handed a piece of paper. He reads it and motions for all of you to huddle around him.
It is a neatly printed letter that says: Captain An Kel's true name Anacial Kenai and he did not take with him what he came for when he left Phiam. He will return in the spring. Be ready.
