Title: Divine Champions 2, Nycaloths 0

Lots to accomplish in the next two weeks. Start with the immediate aftermath of the ambush and I will move on when you are done.

Rubius checks on everyone and supplies healing if needed.  Once that is done, he will collect all the items from the ninja stew that Ari left all over the streets.  After that, I suggest we prepare to explain what happened to the authorities who will probably be here shortly.

(OOC: I was hoping to see "Introducing the new Nycaloth Slayer" prestige class..." in the subject line.  ;D)

"Ok.  We need to get everyone into the mansion, like now.  Ajax, get our wards moving.  I'll deal with the authorities."  Parker pulls out a quill, ink, and parchment and leaves the following note pinned to the Nycoloth and the golden puddle of not-Thaddius:

'These creatures have been slain by Parker Berko and Company.  For a complete recap of events please go to [insert Parker's address here].  Thank you for your timely arrival.'

Parker will pick up two stones and cast light on them both and place the stones underneath the notes so that the authorities will be sure to find them.  Then follow the rest into the Mansion compound

Does the Nycoloth body remain there, or has it dissipated?

The walk with the Furius Guardian back to the house.

Are there any city folk watching, or in site?

I will Legend Lore the flail later.

A crowd has already gathered where Ari dispatched the assassins. Two junior constables who look like they are having trouble keeping their breakfast down are keeping them back.

As soon as the furious guardian come out an even larger crowd gathers to watch. The nycaloth begins to dissipate. It leaves behind a belt, gauntlets and greaves. It's torc was destroyed by Ajax's blow.  Even after laying hands on himself Ajax is seriously wounded but he says he will heal and to save the wand charges for later.

The furious guardian collects those other items as well and carries them back.

Asinjin never goes around that corner to witness Ari sushi-making.

Instead of the notes, Parker will just go over to the Jr. Constables and give them the same information as was going to be in the note

No one invisible. Ari does not detect anyone in his radius either, though the flail's aura is now distinct.

As Parker informs the constables of what happened (and after all the loot is collected), Rubius will go around to the people in the crowd, offering food and drink and doing his best to comfort those who seem most upset, especially women and children.  I assure them that the area is safe and that everything is under control.  I do silly monster sounds and make contorted faces to amuse the children and weave a tale of how heroic Ari, Parker, Robyn, Asinjin, and Ajax were was in defeating them (leaving out the gore, or course, and I make no mention of Arian and Liera).

Diplomacy check = random roll 17 + 8 modifier = 25.

You all make it back into the mansion without further problems. Jarius and VJ bring cold water to drink and clean up. After you are all present for a few minutes everyone, even Parker, begins to develop a headache and then nausea.  Ari, Arion and Asinjin are particularly affected.  Ajax's aura seems diminished. Ajax approaches the golem and as he gets closer raises his arm to shield his face as if he is walking towards a fire.  "Be rid of it. Cast it into the sea or bury it but take it from here, it is a shard of the Darkness."

Asinjin in Elemental Body form is immune to physical illness, however the headache is there.

Unless you are immune to death effects and ability drain you are suffering the full effect.

It is an artifact.

You are quite sure that you will die before completing the spell. (Everyone except Parker and Ajax are losing one Con point a minute. Parker is losing one every ten.)

I will cast a Vision spell, it only requires a standard action to cast (it is the more powerful and faster version of Legend Lore.

Seriously?  No save?  Rubius gathers all the companions and tries to usher them away from the Berko Estate as fast as possible.  I won't force anyone who wishes to stay but will insist to the best of my ability that we leave after Asinjin casts his spell.  "Asinjin, please have your gaurdian destroy this before I orphan my kids and widow my wife."

Asinjin, does your spell allow you to know if the CON drain is permanent?  If so, how do we rid ourselves of it?  If not, how long will it last?

How far do you try to go?  The house has a lot of square footage but it's no more than 70' in any direction and at the moment the flail is in the foyer so every room in the house is within 30'.

Assuming you will succeed at the paltry DC 20 check:  This is the Flail of Nilas'Anor. It has been summoned here and will return to him.  It is a +5, unholy, fire, cold, acid, lightning, poisonous,  large heavy flail. It is also cursed as to non-evil beings.

Seeing what is happening to his friends, Parker springs into action.  Parker sprints to his office, 'accidentally' knocking Rubius down along the way.  He leaps over tables, chairs, the odd ottoman, and Jerius in his mad dash.  Once in his office, he tears through his supply of scrolls until he finds the one he is looking for and then sprints back downstairs.

Once downstairs, he grabs some rope from their supplies and cuts off a 6' section of it.  With the rope in hand, Parker moves as close as he can to the 'Furious Guardian' and uses the scroll to cast a Rope Trick spell.  Once the spell is cast, Parker instructs the Flail into the extradimensional space he just created.

Ok a technical note here, the space doesn't close.  here is the description from the SRD:

When this spell is cast upon a piece of rope from 5 to 30 feet long, one end of the rope rises into the air until the whole rope hangs perpendicular to the ground, as if affixed at the upper end. The upper end is, in fact, fastened to an extradimensional space that is outside the multiverse of extradimensional spaces (“planes”). Creatures in the extradimensional space are hidden, beyond the reach of spells (including divinations), unless those spells work across planes. The space holds as many as eight creatures (of any size). Creatures in the space can pull the rope up into the space, making the rope “disappear.” In that case, the rope counts as one of the eight creatures that can fit in the space. The rope can support up to 16,000 pounds. A weight greater than that can pull the rope free.

Spells cannot be cast across the extradimensional interface, nor can area effects cross it. Those in the extradimensional space can see out of it as if a 3-foot by 5-foot window were centered on the rope. The window is present on the Material Plane, but it’s invisible, and even creatures that can see the window can’t see through it. Anything inside the extradimensional space drops out when the spell ends. The rope can be climbed by only one person at a time. The rope trick spell enables climbers to reach a normal place if they do not climb all the way to the extradimensional space.

The bolded section is what Parker is after.  The spell will last for 6 hours.  that's more than enough time to make sure everyone in here isn't going to die and for us to figure out a permanent solution to the issue of what we're going to do with it.  it should just sit there in the space until the spell ends.  Unless of course there is something else at play here which prevents it from staying in the extradimensional space

"Unless of course there is something else at play here which prevents it from staying in the extradimensional space."

When the golem releases its grip the flail drops out of the extra dimensional space.

After two rounds Arion and Lira leave the room and when they don't feel any better they leave the house. This is now round 4.

As they they attempt to leave, Parker directs them (and everyone else) to his office instead.

How long will it take Parker to carry Drag the Flail to the vault?  How long would it take the Furious Guardian?

Asinjin thinks, would an anti magic field or a subvert planar effects spell stop the effects?

What happens if we drop it on to an upper plane?

For Parker a little less than a minute. Can the golem fit through the doors other than the front door or into the stairwell down?  If it can it will take a bit longer than Parker.

Then, unless someone stops him, Parker wraps the haft of the flail in his magic cloak and moves it to the vault.  (Parker has a 22 Str, nit sure if it is a factor in the amount of time it will take him to move it)

I expect the Anti Magic field would stop the effects, correct.

Subvert Planar Effects makes the recipient immune to negative effects from planes that don't match the recipient's alignment.  So if we are feeling ill because the flail is giving off energy from a lower plane, than it should work.

I doubt the golem can maneuver in most of the house's rooms.
That's what I thought. It clearly can't go upstairs as the steps won't support it's weight.

Arion stops when you call to him, draws out the sword and swings double handed at the flail. There is a resounding clang, but no spark or sign of damage to either weapon.

Ajax says: have your golem carry it to the docks and cast it into the sea.  I will follow a safe distance behind as I cannot maintain my defenses against it the whole way there.

Robyn and Ajax both grab you before you pick it up. After a moment of reflection you are fairly sure the cloak would not protect you any better than a pair of gloves.

The anti magic field should work. The subvert effects likely not as it is divinely crafted as opposed to radiating from one plane in particular.

As you open the door Ajax slips in front of Arion and Lira and gives Arion a stern look. Arion dismisses his armor.

Brentan, with Udarin right behind him, looks fit to be tied. "Twelve dead men and two puddles of who knows what in the street!?  This was the nice part of the city when the Onice lived here!  It's bad enough that you raid a shrine, and yes I know Sir or Lord Bartholomew was in charge and well within his authority, to say nothing of the bounty hunter that I already ran out of my city once and . . . what in Amat's cursed name is that!?" (pointing at the flail)

Udarin, casting his eyes around the room, asks much more quietly "Are we in an antimagic field? Hopefully of your making?"

To Udarin and Brentan, "Good Gentlemen, one of the 'puddles' out there is a form of doppleganger known as an 'Adapter'  We have reason to believe several of them have found their way into important positions.  Ari has a blade from Escalon of the Guardian Vale that will allow us to know if you are one of these creatures.  Fear not, we have all take the same test. (Parker shows his hand as proof).  I'm sure you will agree that knowing if you are who you say you are is of paramount importance before getting to the events of the evening.  And, just so you don't think it is some sort of shenanigans on my part, either Lord Arishimoto, Fayalen of Tfop or Aescalos Thanos, Paladin of Stasis will perform the test."

Your statement is met with blinks and confused looks for a moment. Brentan mutters "I should never have left the army." He then sticks out his hand. Udarin says "Could we perhaps step out of the antimagic field first.  I have no reason to doubt you but one of you could be one of these creatures as well and I am all but defenseless here."

They follow you up the steps. As soon as Ajax steps out of the field his glow returns, causing both constables to start (jump) and Brentan to shake his head. "I suspect you have something you can offer me to drink in this house professor?"

Rubius follows the group up the steps, pops his head up out of nowhere, and declares: "I'd be happy to offer you a drink Constables!  What would you like...peach nectar, apple cider, grape juice, coffee, lemonade, perhaps some ale...oh, wait, you're on duty, never mind...would you like some cheese, bread, and fruit to go with it?"  He is smiling wider than he has in days, shoves a piece of bread into his own mouth, and continues to gesture to the food as crumbs pour from his lips.

About ten minutes after the constables arrive Mouser (undisguised) enters with Robyn. Striding past Ajax, Arion and Lira, he stops dead at the edge of the antimagic field. With a slightly cocked head he examines the flail. "That is an imposing weapon. Awesome, neither of them are douchebags.  Good to know. :)

We tell them that a powerful Yougoloth (sp?) and its Adapter sidekick attempted to ambush us with about two dozen minions outside our home.  Fortunately their plan was thwarted by our forethought to scout our own backyard as we have made some powerful enemies as of late, and not because we get ambushed pretty much everywhere we go.  Like all the time.

Brentan leaves, having taken a stiff drink of whatever the best is you have on hand, telling Udarin to get him a full report if warranted. He does not see Mouser or is too annoyed to take notice. Udarin returns to the foyer where everyone is staring at the flail, stands next to Mouser, says "excuse me sir" as he starts to step past him, recognizes him and for the second time in an hour jumps with fright, this time with a yelp. Mouser simply says "Deputy" and continues looking at the flail.

The next few minutes bring even more visitors. Barrington Claywall, the high cleric of Smofarf arrives with Jarius, VJ returns empty handed and reports the cleric of Lakius is at sea. As you are starting to explain things to them Nisoru arrives with Thamolly Pratt, Sir Bartholomew and, oddly, Rathos.

Nisoru takes in the scene for a moment. "We bring good news and bad. All of the Captains of the Knights that we could assemble have been checked and have not been replaced. Only Cardan Etruk of the Orcish Empire and Wilar Tel'cu cannot be found. Maglore has learned that the Adaptors can only hold the shape of a living being and whatsmore must be on the same plane as that being. If they are separated for more than three days, or the subject dies, the connection is broken. Tomorrow Marius will have to return his captives or expose his infiltrators.  Therefore tomorrow we must act. The knights and I will assemble outside the castle. Michael is already working to identify those men he can trust to allow us entry to the outer bailey. Escalon and the Guardians will attempt to rescue the captives.   I would ask you to infiltrate the Castle and bring Arion to the Council. "

"No, you will enter the Castle through the secret tunnels you used . . . already. The knights and I will hopefully be admitted but if Michael does not succeed the we will be defenseless and will most likely have to flee. Our arrival will also serve as a a distraction to our enemies within and outside the Castle giving you a greater chance once you are in the Castle."

Rathos says "I can answer that: I did. Sort of. When I was so rudely taken back to the founding era Prince Gideon and Lady Maria naturally were concerned about the existence of caverns so close to the Castle. Naturally they began searching for the caverns. There are a number of unconnected caverns that we found but we could never find the exact route. When I returned to this time it bothered me so Dean Hawklyn and I and some other students began documenting the caves and where need be making connecting tunnels. The last time I went in I realized that our work made the final path."

The battle took place around 11 am as it took you a little while to turn in the prisoner and walk to your mansion. It's been about an hour since then.

What does Asinjin tell Barrington ?  He was doing OK until Nisoru and Bartholomew showed up. Now he looks a little out of his depth, though he and Thamolly appear to be old friends. If he recognizes Mouser he has not shown it yet.

VJ and Jarius, seeing the number and stature of your guests begin making lunch. As most of the assembled are eating the flail disappears. Ajax asks Asinjin to move into the other room so he can see if it is truly gone and when you move the field he reports that it is no longer present.

Barrington thanks you for the hospitality, says farewell to the assembled, speaks privately with Thamolly and leaves.

Udarin, who has not touched the food, says: "Alright, as the only actual representative of the Crown here, what in the Abyss is going on? Why are people pricking each other with that knife?  Who are you? (Ajax) Why is the princess here? And why does that young man have what appears to be the Gemblade !?!"

Rubius gladly accepts.

You arrive at the College in the early morning hours. Ajax, Ari and Arion draw some notice but stranger things have been seen there, especially this year.

The walk to the north end of the city is uneventful.  You arrive at a row of shops, your destination being slightly familiar (Asinjin presumably covers his eyes) but not exactly the same as it appears unoccupied. Rathos produces a key to a heavy padlock and leads you inside. The basement steps reveal a stone floor with a heavy trap door in the middle of it; this exactly as you remember it from before (?).

That is where we will pick up.

XP Ari, for proving numerous opponents of lesser ability are no match for you 3250
Asinjin :2700,Parker 2500, Rubius (still the lowest level) 3000

I'll take a darkvision as well.

Ari also casts a primal instinct and a primal hunter that night, both which last 24 hours.

Let me know what they do tomorrow.

Or how about now. From Dragon Magic. "Instincts" gives a +5 initiative and survival. "Hunter" gives a +5 jump, climb, swim. Both together give uncanny dodge.

Good news, I have more Darkvisions.

I also have Mage Armor for anyone that doesn't have +4 armor bonus right now.

Better news, I cast Anticipate Teleport and Perfect Summons (widened) on Nisoru.  They will last through the fight.

Better Better news, I cast one of each of them on Arian...just in case I get killed or dispelled.

Still more preparation from your cranky non-neighborhood diviner.

I cast an Extended Luminous Armor on myself (note I usually use my shirt to do this, but it will save me the trouble of having to cast ray of resurgence on myself tomorrow); which I cast next.

Anyone else that wants a Luminous Armor cast on them that will last through the fight, let me know (+5 armor bonus, daylight, and a -4 to hits on you), so essentially a +9 AC.)

I cast Greater Status (exalted deeds version), on Ari, Rubius, Parker, Arian, and Ajax.  The spell is cast on me, but those are the people I pick to watch.  Once again, will last through the fight tomorrow.

I cast Detect Scrying on me, which will last through tomorrow.

I cast Elemental Body Air on myself, last through tomorrow.

Ext. Darkvision and Ext Greater Anti Teleport on myself in the night, to save my spells tomorrow.

A Widened Ext Perfect Summons on myself.

And lastly for that night...A Contingency spell set to cast an Indominability should someone cast a Reciprocal Gyre on me.

In the morning, I cast my typical Mind Blank.
