Title: A Dark Summer
Post by: whitesword on August 13, 2012, 02:38:04 PM
This is a second attempt at this thread (with a one word different title I case the old one can be found and copied)

Any group questions can be posted here. PC specific questions should be emailed to me.  You should refresh your memories of the War with the threads under the Constable section above. You may also want to refer back to the threads on the old board as we have been away from these folks for a while.

Asinjin posted a two part question in the missing thread but I only remember the second half: Is it actually dark?

Yes, both literally and figuratively. The mood of the nation is dark, worse than Parker can remember  it ever being since the end of the Wyvern Crusade. It is also the coldest summer in memory, human or otherwise. It snows in Messada starting only a month after the Day of Light and the skies are rarely free of clouds. Given the attack at the College and the High King's death people are often seen looking at the clouds nervously and a thunder clap that once would have gone unnoticed is likely to send people indoors.   The nights are moonless and rumors of Chosen, Wugs in the sewers and strange spectral dire wolves stalking the wilderness are rampant in the streets and public houses.

Parker and Ari are aware that Asinjin continues to make his home elsewhere.

"I will Send you daily for a report and return if it is needed."

He spends time helped to refurbish the rebuilt temple of Lakius.

The state funeral of the high king takes place ten days after the attack.  Under ordinary  circumstances it would have been held within five days but nothing is ordinary about this funeral. To the shock of many it is the High Cleric of Han-Sui , accompanied by the high clerics of Stasis and Gruweas, who performs the ritual. The streets of the capital are mobbed by mourners. The Brotherhood of the Unbroken Sword are active, trying to capitalize on the fear and anger of the subjects. They appear to be having considerable success. Ari is expected to attend as a representative of his Order. Despite the war there are ambassadors and dignitaries from virtually every nation. Ari is mercifully spared any political activities. (unless he wishes to speak with anyone)

More detail of the events to follow shortly in posts and emails

If Asinjin is forced at any point to be in Russell's presence, he asks, "Who is the next king going to be?"

Only if you seek him out do you find yourself in his presence.

Yes. You and the other members of the squad may go if you wish. Sgt. Windbourne will be going.

I do not seek him out.  Although I tell Parker and Ari they should ask him if they run into him, "He won't tell you, claim he can't for some ridiculous reason, or say that it isn't yet know.  Nonsense magic he professes."

Parker looks at Asinjin quizzically.  "I guess our romp through the fabric of time has indeed addled your brain, my friend.  We already know the answer to this question.  Or, at least, we know who the Guardi.... um, our powerful associates want to see on the throne.  Do you not recall the assemblage of Lady Melodi and the others after out 'trip' where we discussed our exploits and the final bit of realization that came from our discussion?"

Is this before or after ASinjin's investigations at the temple?

This reminds me of a question I forgot to ask: has Asinjin taken Sunjiata with him or formally released him from his service ?

Asinjin's heart is moved by the plea, as he feels much the same way.

"Very well, you may come with me."

However, before I take him, I subject him to a battery of divinations and other spells.  None of which hurt him.  I have to determine how many require his knowledge.

The Funeral: Part One.

The funeral is barely controlled chaos. For two days prior to the ceremony travelers flock to the city from all over the Kingdom and Gnarland.  Many make camp in the pristine green fields between the city and Castle Gemblade. It looks disturbingly like the brief views you had of the same place in 999.

Dignitaries from almost every civilized nation arrive, turning previously quiet embassies into small fortresses. Those delegations that have no embassy, the dwarves of Nomagrock in particular, simply buy out an inn for the week.

There are many notable attendees. Aianna Cadmurren, the high diplomat of the Destroytian Republic, and widely considered the greatest diplomat of the generation, is of course in attendance.  She, along with an honor guard of republic knights attend in full regalia.  She is accompanied by Harfirth Firstcrest, the former emperor.  They are the first to arrive, no small feat given their number.  The entire diplomatic corps seems to revolve around her, which gives credit to her reputation as the Republic is far less powerful than many other nations.  The High King's guard leaves the castle only for their arrival and escorts them to their embassy.  The delegation looks humbled by the honor.

The Yellowian contingent is lead by the king himself, Alawin Padwell.  The brash youthful royal is respectful but often lacking in the exacting measures of etiquette. He is accompanied by Wisker Deldoran, the royal mage and chief advisor and Brandon Wells, the Champion.  He is also accompanied by no less then fifty attendants of all sorts; among them but not always at his side is Thomas, the king's priest, a cleric of Tommimao.  In the company Parker and Ari spot Maleek.  Word spreads that Alawin has stripped the clergy of Tyrogatore of their legal judge status in the kingdom, although they can still adjudicate divine matters.  He has also outlawed the cult of Drunnbar completely, causing instant strife with the Ice Gnomes to say nothing of the Sledghammers.  There is also a delegation of Yellowian nobles apart from the Court.  The king's delegation is given an honor guard of mounted marines but few of the public seem to care.  The nobles enter the city quietly and stay at the city's finest Inn- the Diamond Arms.

From Nomagrok, Gunnbar 1st Sledgehammer, oldest prince, makes an appearance.  His contingent is small. After hearing the Yellowian king's proclamation, not directly, but through the grapevine, he declares he will fight the king for his insult whenever, wherever, once the ceremonies have ended. It is made known that for such an important event, the royalty of Drunnbar swallowed their beliefs and allowed themselves to be transported here for the honoring of such a noble man and king.  They go overboard in their homage to the king.  They appear sincerely saddened by his death.  Rumor spreads quickly that an army of dwarves enroute to help the kingdom in this time of need.  Ari is informed that Grimdrek is in attendance as a bodyguard. They are escorted but not honored in one of the more awkward moments of the day.

There is a fair sized Orcish contingent led by the Grus Cannus of the 4th legion.  They too are escorted and it appears they will not be honored until a single mounted knight, a woman bearing the standard of the High King's legion takes command of the escort and marches them to their embassy while a spell recites the litany of the 4th Legion's victories.  By the end of the procession a sizeable crowd has gathered to watch and, as it concludes, applaud in admiration.

Habastalai sends a single cleric. It is already clear that they disapprove of the war.  Their choice of a 2nd tier cleric, non-grovetender to attend the funeral is evidence of their opinion.

Iott sends Layla the Marshall who attracts a great deal of attention. She has ten attendants, a representative of each tower in Iott.  She is the antithesis of style compared to Aianna.   Attractive and influential in a very different way.  Her outfits are borderline inappropriate, but her charm and beauty are undeniable.  She talks to everyone.  She talks up the king of Yellowia's decisions, applauding them and praising him.  She says nothing about the wars going on around the world that would indicate her and Iott's position on them.  She expresses proper sorrow at the loss of the king, but to your eyes, she is here much more for the event of the gathered dignitaries.  The Iott delegation is largely ignored but Haskra the Reddened, the Sakor'akai dean of the Bardic College School of Magic greets them at their small embassy.

Thalmeret, Hertoplowis, and the Grean republic all send standard delegations.  They cause no drama and are expectantly appropriate.  They receive no escort.  Layraedia, Port Talp, and Northut arrive at roughly the same time.  Members of the Marine legion that was traditionally based in Layraedia form their escort.

The Great Forest sends a large delegation, represented by Wooduke.  Taemus Bewall.  He tells everyone that he is representing the Forest Coalition: Fellos, Balinhost, the Three Communities, and of course his realm.  He claims to speak for Garrlacal and Scalehome as well, but that is less believable.  His delegation includes members of all the races appropriate to his claim, and includes a total of fifty members.  Their delegation is escorted by a dwarf, a captain of the Knights of the White Sword named Derman Warmarch, and ten younger knights.

Finally, the delegations from the Kingdom's long standing allies arrive.  The delegation from Pacyr is notable.  It includes three figures of great import and their fifty person entourage.  Elizabeth Toppin, high cleric of Stasis from Pacyr, who is the official leader of the group.  Ari knows that Elizabeth is also one of the highest ranking Guardians, perhaps the mightiest not on the Council.  It is commonly believed that she is the most powerful of Stasis' clerics as well.  Thousands of people line the streets to see her and Nisoru Metakae precedes her on his griffon as she rides to the High Temple.  The grand entry into the city is lined with soldiers and many flags of Hemator's symbol are unfurled from rooftops.  Michael and the other leaders of the church greet her on the steps of the high temple.  She is accompanied by Roland, the cavalier and Defender of the Faith of Pacyr.  He is a formal, imposing, dour man  The third member is another skilled diplomat, the elf Simonir, the Lord of Strategies.

A large delegation lead by the queen, Brianne Rosetree, arrives from the Rosetree Kingdom.  They set out to show the proper respect and grief fitting a kingdom that has long been an ally.  A company of elves from one of the legions escorts them, led by a female elven general who embraces the queen. Conversely, Amansky sends an eight member mission: four Sakor'akai and four Nipits.  They are lead by a Sakor'akai named Keverene who is dark blue in color and he wears a mask of silver and white swords, eight to be precise.  Strydus Archir, the Nippit high noble and his house guard greet and escort the delegation.

The String Mountain Kingdom delegation is led by the king himself, Bruumur Premit Highmountain.  It is known among the diplomatic circle that the king is in bad straights at home.  After a ten year treaty between himself and his relatives expired last year, a battle for control has ensued.  He is on the younger side and not a gifted speaker.    He is happy to be recognized at least here as the undisputed king.   He is given a massive royal welcome, with an honor guard of Diamond Brigade shock troopers in full dress armor.  Thale Blazingem, the high mage of Icefia, Gramble Firepeak, Thane of the Firepeak Clan, Buld Mountainmagic, Herald of the Church of Stasis and Midan Granitebreaker, Avoral of the Guardian Temple, greet him at the city gates and escort his delegation to the embassy.   His only notable companion is a dwarven warrior, Boddar 'the one eye' Granitebreaker.  He is said to be a formidable combatant and expected to be a serious contender in the next Suian.

Finally, the gnomes of Gnarland arrive.  They are led by Snella Firstice, niece of the high cleric of Gnarion, ruler of Gnarland, that commands the attention.  A stunningly beautiful female, she is a cleric of Gnarion, and likely an Evangelist as well.  Their 50 gnome contingent is also given a parade first to the Temple of Gnarion, the first built outside their homeland and one of the largest as it is built to human dimensions, and then to the embassy, the oldest in the city.

Parker mulls over the notion of making contact with Nisoru, and runs the ideal past Asinjin and Ari.  Unless they have been keeping us up with their end of the effort to establish Arion, we're completely in the dark about what this event has on the plans to install him on the throne.

One night during their discussions Parker brings up the fact that 'Lord Arishimoto' could probably get an audience without raising too much suspicion.  With all of these delegated from various countries in attendance, there will be plenty of meetings and dealings among various powers.

The afternoon of the arrivals Ari, Parker and Asinjin each receive an invitation to attend the official reception for the diplomatic missions at the Bardic College.  The invitation come with an apologetic explanation that ordinarily such an event would be held at the Castle but the High King had turned all of the halls capable of hosting such a reception into strategy rooms and the King's remains were being attended to in the throne room.

For Parker the invitation comes from the Acting Dean and Dean Hawklyn.  For Ari it is essentially a command from the High Cleric.  Asinjin's invitation is from Dean Granitebreaker and he includes a note that many other artists will be in attendance.

RSVP by post or email ASAP.  If all of you are going I will post, if not the attendees get an email.

Sorry this is so late- my internet problems continue.

The State Dinner
When you arrive at the main gate, Ari and Asinjin are early, you find heavy security, with Icefian soldiers, Knights of the Republic and the White Sword patrolling the grounds.  In Ari's case he is saluted by the Knights and then surprised to find a "date" waiting for him: Padra, the cleric from Phiam, as the designee of the High Cleric.  She looks beautiful but somewhat uncomfortable.  There are many in the line that you do not recognize but that problem is quickly remedied as you are announced as you enter the great hall.  As you wait in line, well behind the dignitaries Asinjin hears a familiar voice greeting him: "It is is pleasure to see you master artist", and Itsuwaru smiles at you from an Icefian style suit.

The Icefian delegation is made up of the high wizard and four high nobles : Strydus Archir, Julia Parkstone, a half elf from another of the Kingdom's most revered families, Maratha Everhope, a human woman from a wealthy family, and Gideon Silverforge, scion of a great military and arms trading family, only recently elevated to high nobility.  Midan Granitebreaker of the Guardians is present as are all three of the wizards, Luigi, Cloud and Russell.  Luigi and cloud have attractive dates.  Russell has no date.  Many other professors and all of the deans are present.

The great hall of the College is arrayed as you have never seen it before.  The flag of every nation's delegation hangs from the walls.  Some, Yellowia, Pacyr, the Rosetree's, the String Mountain Kingdom, look very old and are chased with precious metals and stones.  Others, Thalmeret and the Grean Republic, look like they were hastily made but are still of fine construction.  A huge buffet table has been set out and there are over two dozen tables with seating for eight at each but only the name of the head of each delegation or some other dignitary placed at each.  Each delegation is limited to five attendees, which has apparently greatly upset the Gree and the Yellowians.  The Gree because of their indecipherable rules and Alawin because he has substituted his sister Lira for his cleric. Lira looks remarkably different than the last time you saw her but very uncomfortable amidst all of the attention.

All of the major figures from the delegations are present, dressed in their finest gowns, robes or suits.  Layla of Iott gets the most attention early on as her attire is the talk of the room: a revealing form hugging dress covered in magical symbols.  Later when Robyn arrives with Parker her dress seems to shift the conversation to her for a moment.  She draws a clear glare from Layla and her attendants.  Itsuwaru's accent disappears for a moment as he remarks, "Some things never change."
Still her time in the light is short lived as Queen Irene and Samantha Goldenseas, the Queen of the South (in waiting) arrive. Samantha is now 16 years old and will clearly be a woman of preternatural beauty but now still awkward and somber.  Her story is now well known; the only child of the late King of the South, Kandren and his wife a scaled elf, Eliandra, her father sought to dispel any doubts about his loyalty to the High King during the Wyvern Crusade and was killed in a sea battle.  His wife died of a broken heart leaving the child a ward of the Kingdom.  Samantha has short blonde hair, unbecoming a queen most whisper, and is exceptionally tall for a woman, let alone a half elf.  She is reportedly to attend the Bardic College shortly.  Their attire is nothing but appropriate but their entrance still causes all eyes to turn to the young woman.

Ari is relieved to find not only Midan present but Nisoru as well.  Midan introduces you to a gnome Gembel Whitemountain, who is a cousin to the Brokenglaciers, and a member of your order.  He is very honored to meet you and insists on introducing you to Snella Firstice.  She is the epitome of charm and etiquette and praises your order sincerely before moving on to other attendees.  Midan spends his night as far as you can tell with his fellow dwarves, Thale, Buld and the King of the Dwarves.

During the evening Itsuwaru steers each of you expertly into a conversation circle away from the main group where Simonir of Pacyr is quietly speaking with, Aianna Cadmurren, Tvisarc Naepaer, the Grus Cannus of the 4th legion, a bladesinger from the Rosetree delegation, an Ice Gnome, the Wood Duke and Keverene of Amansky.  Strangely none of them seem to notice your approach and you overhear Simonir say:  ". . .the war is all but won and even if it were to end today the Scaled Kingdom will exist no more.  The winter may not be of the Kingdom's making but it has proven their greatest weapon.  Between the lack of a harvest and the blockade there is no food left to feed the civilians or the army, we must  . . .", at which point Itsuwaru says, "My lords and ladies," causing all of them to jump (a particularly funny sight from the Orc) "may I introduce you to Lord Arishimoto Udinaru, commander of the Order of the Banished Hero and Feyalin of Tfop, Professor Parker Berko of this institution and master sculptor Asinjin al-Davounin el-Tarrak."  He then exchanges kisses with Aianna who eyes each of you as if evaluating your mettle.  The rest then introduce themselves to you.
(Post any questions or conversation you have or attempt with any member of this group.)

Before the end of the evening there are a series of speeches, a few controversial.  The first is from the young king of Yellowia. He is undiplomatic in what he says, but not the means in which he says it.  He speaks against the war, but defends the king's right to do whatever he sees fit.  His speech is followed by Aianna who, with great skill, conveys that the republic sees this war as foolish and that it must end.  The true enemies of law abiding nations lie elsewhere, not among the scaled elves.

The Horarian representative begins by praying for peace any implying that a violent death is the reward for warriors but is unable to conclude her speech as a visibly angry Harfith of the Republic shouts her down with calls of pirate! and challenges to put her own house in order before criticizing a noble king and warrior.  The orcs loudly support him and soon after he and they leave.  Aianna is clearly embarrassed.

Next comes the Wood Duke.  Taemus is a capable speaker, but never commands the room like Aianna.  He speaks highly of Stasis and the kingdom of Icefia and expresses sorrow that wars are necessary, but he avoids the question of his opinion on the current war in Icefia.  As the orcs have left, he makes mention of the orcish defeat several years ago at the edge of the Forest.

Simonir of Pacyr speaks of the goal of peace among the nations and cooperation against coming evils and receives polite applause from all but Iott and Thalmeret who look on with contempt.  Shortly thereafter Layla stands to make her speech but the back of her already low cut dress has been pinched by the seam of her chair and is ripped almost completely off of her.  She is quickly covered by an attendant's cape and leaves by a side door.

Keverene of Amansky gives the most memorable and controversial speech of the evening.  With his wings partially unfurled he is an intimidating sight and he makes an impassioned speech.  He speaks about the glories of the kingdom of the past, about its role in the freedoms of the world and particularly Amansky.  He decries the misguided war, speaks harshly against those that are prosecuting it, sending Lord Silverforge into a rage.  He begins to shout the Sakor'akai down only to find that both are momentarily in a globe of silence, cast by Thale, who looks angry but restrained.  Someone quickly dispels the globe but the moment has passed and both return to their places.

Finally, Snella speaks, also beginning with the glories of old Icefia, when Stasis ruled, when his children and grandchildren ruled.  She speaks highly of Nomagrok and their monarchy, pointedly looking at Alawin.  She advocates for a nation ruled in the ways of Gnarland or Nomagrok, a true theocracy with, either Stasis himself or his clergy as the rulers of the kingdom.  This earns a few polite claps and looks of disbelief from the Yellowians.

Post any responses or questions.  Two shorter parts still to come.

Aianna, after considering you for a moment says: "I fear that the church of Tyrogatore is in crisis. There are stories from all over Habololy of attacks both physical and' casting a practiced eye around the room, 'political." "Many of the high temples have reported attacks on their faithful." "As for Jaswap, there has been no word in some time."

Ari addresses Parker and Asinjin privately: "Be on your guard. Our enemies may consider such a gathering of Habololy's political powers to be too tempting of a target to ignore."

Sorry this is so late- my internet problems continue.

"Good evening My Lords, My Lady." Parker bows politely to each.  "Were that we could have met under happier circumstances.  What with the weather, the war, and now this..." Parker shakes his head mournfully, "The Future King (Parker puts subtle emphasis on those two words) will have a heavy mantle of responsibility placed on their shoulders right from the outset.  May the gods deliver us one who is strong strong of character and bold of heart.  I fear both will be needed in these troubled times."

You a get a mixed reaction with nods of agreement up until the word bold. The Sakor'akai responds:  "The next king (and the Bladesinger interjects or Queen) must be bold as Stasis or Gideon the First, not like Darscon or Gideon the Third. He was called the Bold and nearly destroyed the Kingdom and cost the allies the Great War."

Aianna says "Yes, wisdom, courage and temperance will be needed for this new king; but he must be bold enough to right the wrongs here and aid his allies when it is hard."

Do not feel overly secure, my friends. We do not know the full strength that our enemies can bring to bear. Just one of the Dark One's agents was able to defeat the king and his guard, Tfop bless them, who were all no doubt highly skilled. If all of our enemy's champions were to unite, who knows what they are capable of? Perhaps the King's assassination was part of their scheme to bring the Kingdom's allies under one roof.

It certainly seems unlikely, but until we know what our enemies plan, we must always be prepared for the worst.

There is an uncomfortable silence at that question and all eyes turn to Aianna. After a lengthy pause she says "The royal line is very confused and I have studied it extensively in the last few days.  Who possesses the traits we have mentioned Lady Alara, the captain of the Knights would seem ideal but she is a cleric of Stasis (at which the Ice Gnome perks up) and the Kingdom has never had a cleric of Stasis as high monarch. She is also of course a woman and there is an ancient preference for continuing the royal line that is not unique to Icefia. Furthermore here relation to the royal line is so distant that I could not even authenticate her claim."

"Other than Alara, there are many fine young cousins, many in the military and others in the service of one of the powers. None are well known outside the Kingdom and I will reserve my opinion for now.".

Yes- you last saw her when you returned. She looks more mature but still uncomfortable. She spends much of the night following her brother around, being introduced and lavished with praise. Brandon Wells is always right behind her.  Wells is around your age, of average height and build with typical Yellowian features and brown hair.  He doesn't convey the same dangerousness as the other elite warriors you you have met. He looks like a nobleman as much as a warrior.

As you approach Lira looks around nervously and when you are still a step or two away Wisker Deldoran slides in front of you. "Sir Arishimoto, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. Master Hardcastle speaks so highly of your character and skill with a blade. On behalf of his majesty allow me to thank you for returning Lira back to the College safe and sound. Hopefully her last year there will conclude uneventfully."

While he is speaking with you Lira has been hustled over to meet another ambassador.

As the evening moves into the desert service there are a series of gifts and tribute unveilings. Paintings of the king, ode's and laments are read or sung, the most moving of which is sung by a student at the College named Vaura Semeti. Her voice brings nearly everyone to tears, including all of the dwarves, and earns her a five minute ovation. She will also perform at the funeral the day after tomorrow. There are also several sculptures the most impressive of which is crafted by Asinjin. The attendees marvel at its construction and there are immediate offers to purchase the work.

After the tribute there is the exchange of gifts among the nations. Itsuwaru quietly tells Asinjin and Parker that this is a time honored tradition with many layers of meaning and  complex protocols. Among those protocols is that the gift must be opened in sight of the attendees and another is that the nation making the gift is not announced until it is opened and the accompanying message read aloud so that the recipient will not be prejudiced. "Given the speeches earlier this could be the the most entertaining part of the evening."

After a few minutes a clear pattern develops. Aianna is the recipient of numerous gifts; some are messages to the Republic while others are intended to keep one of her counterparts in her good graces. She is called to the front of the room almost every third time.

In between her appearances a few pointed gifts are given. Gnarland presents the Yellowians an Ice Crystal plate inscribed with the symbols of all the powers of the Counsil and all the good and neutral cults. Asinjin is impressed by the workmanship and notices Allanda's symbol glowing and Mouser's flares for a moment and then winks out.

Thalmeret gives the Pacyrans a replica of the wall that was breached centuries ago. They in turn give the Meretans a painting of Herstal Steelsun, the great general and defender of Cadullon on the Day of Falling Death; also famous for uniting nations in a common cause.

The delegation from Amansky gives the Icefians a copy of their treaty. Icefia was the first nation to recognize Amansky.

Aianna receives every gift with the same grace and formality. Her voice never betrays any frustration or boredom. On her seventh trip to the front of the room she receives a jewel box, ebony wood chased with midnight blue sapphires. The note reads "A momentary glimpse of what is to come." As she lifts the lid the box collapses in on itself and she drops it with a shriek as a perfect black sphere three feet in diameter expands in its place. She recoils from it but not before her left hand turns white like chalk and part of it crumbles to dust. The skirt of her gown too is disintegrated but she pivots away from further  harm.  The sphere then floats unerringly across the room directly at Elizabeth Toppin. She stands her ground and the it strikes her full on; there is a brief flare as the sphere strikes some type of protection and the sphere's momentum seems spent but all of the flesh of her hands and forearms is turned to dust.  You hear a bark of frustration from Luigi and Elizabeth sets herself for another assault but Roland knocks her to the ground, a cloud of dust all that remains of him.  Then just as quickly as it began the sphere disappears in a blink.

The room is completely silent except for Aianna'a sobs of pain.  A voice of quiet power breaks the silence "Lord Nisoru, see to Lady Elizabeth. Lord Arishimoto, see to Ambassador Cadmurren." All eyes turn to Allanda standing in the door way.  The shadows of the room seem to retreat.  Some bow, including the queen of the elves, the Sledgehammers back away, their eyes on the floor and most of the rest stammer some form of salutation. "I respectfully suggest that we consider the event concluded and that you return to your embassies and accommodations."  With that all of the delegations except the Pacyrans and Destroytians leave quickly, filing out mostly in silence.

Allanda turns to Russell: "Professor do you have at your disposal the spell of my old friend Gonaire that will show us what we did not see?"

Russell nods "Yes Lady" and he begins to cast a spell.  Around the room all of the professors, Nisoru, Thale, Midan and the three of you look on in silence.

Russell's spell shows the room in all it's splendor and nothing unusual for a time but as the gift presentation begins the shadows near the door and gift table grow subtly longer, no longer corresponding to the light and obstructions. As Dean Haskra hands another gift off after evaluation the box is placed on the table of cleared gifts seemingly by a hand of shadow. The extended shadow remains during the attack but withdraws at Allanda's entry.  Aianna and the Pacyrans watch in silence.

After a moment Aianna speaks. "Thank you Lady Dean. Lord Arishimoto would you and Master Asinjin escort me back to my embassy? I do not wish to send for Lord Firstcrest, word of this must not reach him until he is in a better state of mind. "

As you walk through the city it is quiet and the moon is covered but the city has always been well lit, in this section by magic.

Aianna says to you: "Master Asinjin, as I am sure you know little escapes my notice and I learned what I could of you once I heard your name announced but what little I have heard does not encourage me to share information with you.  So I can only judge you by your companions and as Lord Arishimoto is a man of honor and a true servant of good, though, she turns to Ari, somewhat lacking in etiquette, so I see no harm in explaining the Council of Succession.  This will be the third such Council.  The first occurred during the War of Technology when the heir was too young to take the throne.  The second when the High King was so incompetent, and possibly corrupt that there was call for his removal.  The Council is made up of the heads of the high noble families and the lesser monarchs.  There are currently 16 high noble houses.  There had been 13 for many years but Darscon elevated three families from noble to high noble status.  Traditionally the Grandmaster of the Knights of the White Sword would be on the council, but there has been no Grandmaster in generations.  Likewise the Lord Protector would sit but there is no Lord Protector, as Lord Thanis resigned his position.  Finally the High Cleric of Stasis sits on the council as well.

It is not an election.  The heralds and scribes present the royal line as it exists to the council and then they review each candidate beginning with the closest blood relation.  At this point there maybe a dozen relations of equal claim so they will each be evaluated.  A two thirds vote is needed to eliminate a candidate completely and a unanimous vote is needed for selection.  Relations can be eliminated, or simply passed over, for a variety of reasons including gender, religion, especially true since Baliol, Cleric of the Oldest Orc reigned during the War of Technology, profession and personal history.  On the whole the Councils have fared well but this will be as important as the first, perhaps more so."

He stopped you before you had a chance to call out. If you attempt to go around him he motions to Dean Hawklyn, the master of ceremonies. (There is no way for you to reach her without making a scene.)

Do we have a telepathy spell up? If yes, I ask Asinjin or Parker:

~It seems I am being prohibited from speaking him Lira. Can one of you try to talk to her while I'm distracting Whisker?~

To Whisker: "Perhaps you can explain the proper protocol to me, as I have no desire to make a scene yet. How does one formally request an audience to speak with a friend? I can assure you that I will not simply go away, I will speak with Lira before the night is done. As a Feyalin of Tfop, persistence is one of my greatest attributes.  Perhaps also one of my faults. And surely being from Yellowia you know that the best way to get a feyalin to do something is to tell him he is not permitted to do it. We are by our very nature defiant of imposed authority." All said with a genuinely pleasant smile.

How badly injured is she? I lay on hands for 42 hp if I think it will help. Heal check = 9+11 =20.

I assume I am carrying weapons but no armor?
That amount will be sufficient.  You are fully arrayed, just extra cleaned up.

Parker and Robyn make their way over to Lyria.  They will use other patrons to try to obscure the fact that they are trying to reach Lyria.  If it looks like they are going to be stopped, Parker will distract whoever it is while Robyn makes the final approach.  We will great other patrons as if we are just merry minglers.

Title: Re: A Dark Summer

The ceremony:

The Funeral begins under a low gray sky, typical of this cold dreary summer.  The city is packed with uncounted thousands lining the grand promenade that will lead from the prepared platform outside of the High Temple of Stasis.  The route is well known and well ordered with hundreds of soldiers and constables.  The body was brought to the Temple of Han-Sui last night (although the public does not learn it is not the High Temple of Stasis until the morning).  The ceremony will be brief but there will be speeches, an ode, a lament and then the party will process back to Castle Gemblade.

The list of prominent Icefians on the platform is extensive but a few bear mention.  All of the lesser monarchs are present.  Oliver Westrom, the King of the Midlands is a man of average height for a human, just under six feet. He may be as young as 40 but could be in his fifties based on his gray hair and weathered face.  All of you recognize that he carries a longsword bearing Kovan's mark on his belt.  He looks uncomfortable in full armor.  His wife is beside him. She is clearly much younger and beautiful but does not look like a noble woman.

The Queen of the North, Irene Degalas Gemblade is unaccompanied and dressed in a black gown.  She is in her late forties or early fifties, still one of the most beautiful women in the kingdom; her dark hair showing no grey but her face marked by grief.. He slain husband was the King's only brother.

Cyrus Whiteknight, the King of the West is incredibly aged, well into his eighties but appears at least ten years younger.  It is remarkable to you who met him, how much he looks like Garland.  He is dressed formally with a sword but no armor.  He too is unaccompanied and Irene sometimes leans on his arm during the ceremony.

The Queen and King of the Sea, monarchs of the smallest realm, its seat in Tripsea, are figures of great mystery and this is the first they have been seen in the capital in years.  Tanya Peerless is a woman if indeterminable age and unremarkable appearance, though beautifully dressed and made up for the occasion.  She has silver hair and blue eyes and after looking at her for only a moment you feel as if she is looking back at you.  It is very unsettling.  Her husband is shorter than she and roguish looking, with a rapier, high boots and pantaloons.  He is in his fifties but quick.  It is well known that he was a privateer and abandoned his name for her royal name when he won her hand.

The King of the Elves, who more and more your hear referred to as Rose Elves rather than Northern Elves here in Icefia, is Tanissal Rosetree.  There is no doubt of his royalty and all of his fellow monarch greet him warmly.  He has long blonde hair and green eyes, his armor is mithril and longswords rest on both hips.  Amusingly to some and touchingly to others he stands with the other full demi-human monarch, Gramble Firepeak, Thane of the Dwarves.  He is old for a dwarf but not ancient and getting a bit plump; the straps of his plate armor look a bit too long for proper adjustment and the hammer on his belt tilts out from his waist but otherwise he is finely dressed as well.  Neither Tanissal nor Gramble are accompanied by a spouse or consort.

Last is the wealthiest child in all of the Kingdom: Samantha Goldenseas, the Queen of the South in waiting.  Her guardian and regent is a serious, scowling, woman named Darva Starger, reportedly a cleric of Mouser and former agent of the Ministry of Security.  The King of the Dwarves and the Queen of the Elves are also on the platform.

There are few members of the Royal Family on the platform.  The only one you recognize is Alara, the Captain of the Knights of the White Sword.  It is interesting to see the assembled members of the royal family, for in some there is no resemblance to the image of Stasis, or for those that have met him, Gideon, his son.  But others such as Alara, Arion, and even Darscon, could be children of Stasis, not five centuries removed.

The platform otherwise has few recognizable faces.  You come to learn the identities of a few:  Howland Crystalsmyth, now the Steward of the High King's lands and responsible for the war and the Council of Succession.  He is a middle aged man with black hair, streaked with gray, slicked back all around and a goatee.  He is wearing a breastplate with a black sash and appears genuinely upset during the service.  Beside him at all times is a person all recognize: Martine Vanyar, the High King's Champion and one of the most dangerous men alive.  His champion's mantle is also covered by a black sash.  Behind them are Thale Blazingem, the High Mage, a String Mountain Dwarf, Strydus Archir, the Nippit high noble, Winston Summers, High Admiral of the Navy, Jeremy Eldsmith, High General of the Army, said to be the architect of the strategy of the current war and Amana Rosetree, High General of the Army and daughter of Tanissal and last Julia Parkstone, high noble and herself a half Rose elf.

The ceremony is performed by Eynas Coldsprings, the High Cleric of Messada and by extension the Kingdom.  It is well known that he is not the most powerful cleric of Han-Sui in the kingdom.  Cantrav Windbourne, cleric of the temple in Phiam is generally presumed to hold that distinction, but he is perceived by some to be too liberal.  He likely would not even hold his position but for the scandal of the Temple in Cape Tolya where the previous high cleric of the Kingdom, Garret Culdown broke with the church over the persecution of the cults and is now considered an apostate but still has the protection of the Kingdom.  He now runs a small shrine in Cape Tolya devoted to both Han-Sui and Stasis.  Coldsprings is accompanied by Welton Anolion, the high cleric of Gruweas' small church in the Kingdom.  He is a wealthy man from Phiam and is reputed to be among the most miserable people one would ever meet.  To Coldsprings' right is Michael Steelsmyth, the High Cleric of Stasis, Steward of the Church of Habololy.  Michael looks as miserable as Anolion's reputation before and after the ceremony; a combination of grief and humiliation, for Darscon was his lifelong friend who still sought his counsel until the very end.

The honor guard is formidable but understated.  The King's horse is led by John Toppin, the captain of the Royal Guard.  Toppin is the largest human any of you have ever seen.  He is well over seven feet tall and in full plate looks as if he is broader than any two men.  He carries a massive great sword on his back.  Rumors say he took it from a fire giant he slew and had it ground down to a useable size.  Given its size it is not out of the realm of possibility.  Behind him are Haida Degalas, sister of Irene, Thelan Eramu (Commander-General) of the High King's Legion.  It is rumored that she was slain in the attack against the High King.   A much harder looking woman than her beautiful sister but not unattractive. She is armored with a breastplate and wears two longswords.  She is the woman who rode out to meet the orcs.  She too looks crushed with grief. Next is Alexander Caladrian, the High Constable of the Kingdom, his mighty warhammer on his back.  The casket floats between them.  Last are three Captains of the Knights of the White Sword: Wilar Tel'cu, the ancient, dark green, Sakor'akai, Kaelan Eramu (Major General) of the Guardian Brigades, his mask painted black and his white sword sheathed between his wings.  Next is Lord Anthony Sunfall, a Destroytian nobleman who wears the symbol of Stasis on his left shoulder guard and Han-Sui's on his right.  He too wears a black sash.  Finally, at the rear is Thammolly Pratt, his face unreadable, in a navy blue robe with the symbol of the symbol common to the Kingdom, the Order and the Royal line emblazoned on his chest win platinum thread.

The procession moves silently up the promenade but as it approaches the High King's gate a sound builds through the crowd.  A murmur, then a hundred thousand words spoken together and then a common scream of fear.  The clouds above have taken the shape of a great gray dragon.  There is instant chaos and the crowd begins a stampede but as the threat is above they move in all directions.  Wizards place walls of wind and water in their way to prevent them from rushing the procession; some get through and are put to sleep.  The cloud shape lasts only a minute before it is dispersed but the panic lasts until spell casters calm the crowd with augmented words and other more direct spells.  It takes over an hour to truly restore order, collect the wounded and mark the dead.  The clerics of Dedestroyt who arrive are told to leave or be arrested.  One resists and is beaten unconscious by constables before the crowd can kill him.

Two days after the funeral a proclamation is issued by the Steward:  The armies are to hold their positions until the general staff issues new orders.  The lesser monarchs have complete authority over the lands save those of the High King.  No new laws or taxes will be issued, nor any appeals heard or executions carried out until after the Council of Succession has determined who is in line to take the throne.  The heralds are already at work identifying potential heirs. No date for the Council to meet is given.

It is now three days before the Day of Light, 785.

The next few weeks are uneventful. Presumably Asinjin returns to his secret home.

7-12 Leenot: the Southern Army, which had been encamped, but not truly entrenched, a few miles east of Portet, is attacked and destroyed in a merciless and relentless surprise attack by the elves main army.  After the destruction coastal forts and the troops sent to reinforce them the elves disengaged from their position in near where they had defeated the Northern Army and began a forced march to intercept the Southern Army. Likely they would have reached them in time but the death of the High King and the general order that the armies hold their positions allowed the elves to proceed at a more conservative pace and plan a lethal attack.

Nearly 100000 elves supported by nearly 1000 wyverns, likely all those battle ready remaining, attacked just after sunset, ensuring the entire first phase of their plan would take place in the moonless darkness.  The elves attacked without mercy and took no prisoners. When day broke the elves withdrew but had surrounded the Icefians and would not allow them to retreat. When night came the attack was renewed though the Icefians had improved their defenses and their casualties were less severe. On the third day the Icefians made no effort to retreat, instead entrenching on all sides but south. The elves spent the day studying the defenses and that night the elves launched an audacious attack, landing nearly 7000 elite troops within the Icefian defenses by Wyverns carrying light baskets. The infiltrators and wyverns caused mass chaos, destroying siege engines and crushing soldiers in their sleep. Even before the dawn a frantic retreat south began with heavy casualties. Again the elves showed no mercy putting any fallen soldier to the sword.  Only a well coordinated counter attack by General Bleedingblade and his marine legion avoided a complete disaster. The elves pressed as long as they could until coming into range of the navy's catapults and ballista. Over 25000 Icefians have been killed.

The reaction to the battle among the public is immediate. Enlistments triple and the general staff orders that for infantrymen the training period be reduced to three weeks from the usual eight.

Only five days after the battle on land a fleet of Horarian blockade runners attempted to relieve Portet. Their efforts met with disaster as they mistook the outer ring of heavy ships loitering outside the ice flow as the blockade only to find multiple rings of Eagle battle cruisers and Dolphin frigates closer to the coast. The navy announces it as the largest victory against the pirates in over a century.

"I thought word was the elven nation was beaten."

"Were the pirates hired, or has Kathow-tio-Horari thrown in with the elves?"

The army and the nation are not necessarily the same thing.

According to the Horarians : hired, renegades pirates that they pray for every night.

As far as anyone can tell the Steward and the General Staff. The high generals are Eldsmith, Rosetree and Silverforge. The High Admiral is Aubrey Summers. Since the resignation of the Lord Protector the general of the marine legions, Bleedingblade, has been a defacto member of the staff as well.

After the announcement of the defeat Phiam becomes a much different city. Enlistments increase dramatically further reducing the number of men in the city. After a few weeks the dock workers threaten another strike as their numbers are reduced but their labor is not. They don't strike after they are given greater overtime pay, covered by the Crown.

The city also sees a significant number of incidents of mercenaries attempting to illegally enter the Kingdom.  The Kingdom admits a small number of mercenaries, particularly String Mountain Dwarves and some Orcs, but the Legions have never looked positively on mercenaries and they are highly selective. The promise of high pay and perhaps land is enough for many others to try and enter anyway. As Cape Tolya is much further and it's harbor better patrolled, Phiam and Tripsea have become the common entry points. In the last few weeks several groups have been caught and not all have gone quietly. A few days ago a group of Orcs fought with both the Constables and the Marines until the entire dock was in chaos. They were eventually subdued but their horses stampeded through the market and scattered through the city. There is a reward equal to their value for their capture.

Crime has increased with so many foreigners in the city. Many are unaccustomed to the Kingdom's laws but others are just rough men who think they can do as they please.

Finally, the cold summer and war have begun to affect the prices of food, clothing and lumber.
