Title: Just one last thing . . .
Post by: whitesword on November 24, 2020, 04:58:12 PM
Good timing to have two weeks off as there’s much to be done.

What do you do to assist in the imminent clash of armies?
What efforts do you make to rescue/retrieve those pulled into the astral vortex?

And after that what’s next?

Kerkly is still in the interplanar telepathic bond, so he relays that he is relatively safe in the outlands and he can make his way back.  He relays that he doesn't know where the others went.

Asinjin and Benlin will continue their efforts to defeat the barbarian horde.

So I am clear, you said there were more holes in the anti magic in the barbarian horde than the wugs?

There are also clearly leaders in that group, the hunters in the middle?

Solaris Tries to rally the troops in all the chaos.  He cast divine insight on himself and ask a bard to cast the spell that projects his voice. Hopefully there is a least 1 bard in the area that can cast that spell.  If that spell is the cast he makes a diplomacy check to make the people fanatical see below.  My check with the current spells on me is a +49 (Eagles Splendor, Divine insight and good hope, is there anything I am missing).

Friendly DC 60
Helpful DC 50

This means I automatically make anyone that is already helpful into a fanatic and 50/50 shot of making anyone friendly or higher into a fanatic follower.  Let me know if I missed any other bonuses that add to skill check.  Whitesword feel free to roll my check for others.

The attitude of fanatic is added here. In addition to the obvious effects, any NPC whose attitude is fanatic gains a +2 morale bonus to Strength and Constitution scores, a +1 morale bonus on Will saves, and a -1 penalty to AC whenever fighting for the character or his or her cause. This attitude will remain for one day plus one day per point of the character’s Charisma bonus, at which point the NPC’s attitude will revert to its original attitude (or indifferent, if no attitude is specified).

Just a note that the Ecstasy spell I cast causes a -4 penalty to all skill checks.  Also remember spellcasting while influenced requires a DC 15 Concentration check.

Parker and Martine are not on Ysgard, but the scene is the same.

Navi is on a bleak featureless plain. There are uncountable beings milling about and in the distance there is a city so massive it’s walls would encompass all the cities of Habololy combined together. Before it’s iron walls fiends are herding the beings. Navi’s presence causes an immediate reaction and fiends begin heading in her direction.

Shaar finds herself in a scene almost identical to the one she left. She too is on a plain but the ground appears made of metal. There is a massive battle raging around her. The combatants are all humanoids, mostly goblins and orcs. The sky is a dull red.

The herald of the legion behind the one where Belarek landed rushes forward and casts the spell. (Takes 4 rounds to get there and cast)

Parker will try to ascertain where in the multiverse they are.  He will ask Martine if he has any way to contact those we left behind.  He will also ask Martine to give him a 'broad strokes' overview of his abilities, because he really wasn't paying attention during the battle. (can he cast spells? competent fighter? is he rougeish? does he have a little Bard in him? etc...)

Then Parker will try to find the quickest way back.  He currently has a +25 Gather Information check

(Parker, as an Icefian, knows that Martine is one of the greatest swordsmen to ever live. He is the reigning Suian champion and champion of the kingdom. He’s one of the most famous people in the world).

Martine says: “I have almost no experience with the outer planes. Far more likely that you can figure this out than I. I’ll worry about keeping us alive if need be. Why don’t we ask these women where we are?”

Towards the spire.  Kerkly would know, but I am pretty sure I can't plane shift out of here.  I have a planar key, so I can get all my spells.  Can I use Sending?

"Oh, yes, of course."

Parker will close the distance to the two women (about 30ft away), empty hands held out to the sides showing he means no harm/he is no threat.  When he gets close enough he will call out:

"Well met, we are travelers and have met with a bit of misfortune.  Would you be so kind as to tell us which planer domain this is?"

Assuming that is the case, Benlin is going to retrieve the lantern archons and we are going to have the seek and destroy all of the wugs carrying the kobolds with skins.  They can fly above the fields and shoot down at 30 feet range, so as not to wink out.  They have DR 10, so the ranged attacks should have not effect on them.

Also, is there a huge pile of debris where the wall of destroyed?

No, the Outlands are most alike to the material plane. Only in the divine realms are the rules different.

Except the closer you get to the spire magic begins to fade.

They go up about 15’ on a kobold.

After some observation, Asinjin thinks you can pick out unprotected targets with rays and missiles but area affect spells are going to hit at least one bubble.

So I may be better heading towards a border town.  I will sit and pray for some different spells that will aid me on that.  Kerkly has the Spell Changing feat, so it takes me ten minutes instead of an hour.

Need the area to be effective.  That distance is fine, it will allow archons to target from 30 feet.

Things do not look eternally bleak, so not likely the lower planes.  And, I don't have that skin prickling sensation I get when visiting Mt. That is more than I would expect against infantry, cavalry; those weights I would more expect from the siegers.  That said, is there anything around 30-50 pounds in the city in quantity?

I have the lantern archons search.

That’s true about the weight. There are some 50lbs shot for the anti personnel catapults. But they mostly use bolt throwers against small groups of infantry.

Kerkly, who can still communicate, plans this.  He wants the lantern archons to go to the 50 pound shot (teleporting).  They can teleport items up to 50 pounds.  They will teleport the shot to about 500 feet up and the drop over and ahead of the northern most wug army (I believe they have not been hindered yet.

They can unleash that storm every other round.  Each ball will take 1 round (just under 6 seconds to be precise) to hit the ground at 120 miles an hour.  They don't aim for particular targets, just hit the area of the horde.

The southern corps will reach them in two rounds. The north corps will reach them in about a minute, with the barbarians about three rounds behind. The remnants of the north center corps, those not scattered by the second aspect, are making their way to the gate. The southern center corps, who have reformed around the Bloated, are about three minutes away. They are the target of the trebuchets, as most of the other formations are inside their range.

The lantern archons will target the corps about a minute away.  Since they are not as scattered and therefore they will have the most impact.  I suspect in the minute, the archons can drop three volleys.  Hopefully 90 stones has some effect.

The rocks do some damage, break up the formations and cause chaos. Some of the wugs break off and head towards the gate, rather than continue over open ground. Most of them are cut down by arrows and bolt throwers.

After the third barrage, the archons teleport to the gate and hover above it at 30 feet.  They wait until anyone gets within 30 feet of them and blast away.  their goal is to knock out enough to really start to effect the ability to run into the city.

Benlin, returning with Rubius (while the archons are dropping rocks) casts Cometfall into the center hunter of men.

Creates a boulder which drops, not effected by anti magic (no SR).  Everyone in a five foot radius takes 15d6 damage reflex for half and those that fail are knocked prone if they survive.  Also creates a heavy debris field to slow any who have to go through it.

Asinjin and more importantly Rubius, spot the barbarians to see who reacts differently and might be in charge.

The comet blasts a significant hole in the line and more importantly (as they thought they were protected from such things) the barbarian leaders redouble the charge. They cut in front of the wug corps and cause even more disruption.

Yes, sorry. It’s clear who (in the group struck by the comet) who is giving the orders.

For reference there are three barbarian tribes present- the Snowserpents (largest group), Cavehome (almost look like humanoids, second largest), Hunters of Men (smallest group but most formidable looking and have the most anti magic coverage)

After two rounds of full attack you have to move to get line of sight to the front ranks and the barbarians put their shields over their heads to obscure your view of the leaders (though they’re just trying to protect themselves)

Next tactic to slow them down, mess them up.  Asinjin is going to create 3600 square feet of dolorous motes in front of the gate, leading up to it.  This is when the first group gets close.

there are 36 motes, so everyone is going to have to make a bunch of saves.  I understand that the anti magic is going to shield them, but they are not all covered, and fewer now that some groups are spread out.  Every time one enters, it will fail its save and stop.  It will snap out of it when a anti magic hits, but that won't be enough time for it to move and get out before it is re-effected, at least in some cases.  The running fields pass over in less than a round.

It should create a log jam that slows them notably.  Also, it will eventually weed some out in the motes after all the fields pass.

I’m having trouble picturing how that looks. The gate is 30’ wide and the army is advancing south parallel to the city wall. Do you have them in a line like a wall perpendicular to the city wall? Or in a line  in front of the opening like a gate?

Asinjin has another idea, as they are likely nearly at the wall, the icefian soldiers at this point.  He thinks to Ari, who needs to ask the king:

~would you like a blizzard?~

The motes are not as effective as you’d hope against the barbarians. As they approach the opening they form into a column (so that they can pass through the gate).  It exposes them to more fire from the city’s defenses, but as the column is only five or six men across almost the entire column is in the anti magic shells. Those that fall are simply trampled to death by their fellows.

How long to the motes last?

Benlin Cometfalls the first group to get to the gate edge, that creates another field of difficult terrain right at the gate as well as killing whoever leads the charge.

Once the first hundred or so barbarians gets through, Asinjin puts up a wall of stone (read from scroll) forty feet long, ten feet high and four inches thick.  Anchored on either side against the existing wall (since the gate opening was 30 feet, that should be five feet on each side.

Ari, you tell me if you want the Blizzard to cover the area (3600 foot radius).  It will basically bring the battle to a halt as you can't see and a foot of snow drops each round for 18 rounds.  Wugs would take 1d6 subdual each round.

Note that like control weather, this is not subject to anti magic.

Also note, that the lantern archons are floating 30 feet above the gate and begin blasting away as soon as the barbarians arrive.  That's a total of 60 +2 ranged touch attacks dealing 1d6 each.    They are extraordinary attacks, so anti magic doesn't help.  Likely 30 hit each round because they are touch attacks, so 30d6 damage to barbarians.  Should knock out a few each round.

Once the wall is up, they find and swarm those that got inside.

You can’t cast the spell into the anti magic area. The shells won’t dispel it but there’s no gap in the bubbles big enough to cast into.

Alright, I'll stay and perforate the barbarian leaders.  Once they're slowed down or dead, I'll head towards the southern corps or The Bloated; whichever is presenting the greatest threat at that time.

One woman looks at the other and says: “I miss Asgard. At least there we have Heimdall there to warn us of this sort of thing.”  The other nods and says to you: “Please wait here.”

She enters the hall and in less than a moment a (very) different figure emerges. Sharkandrik, the massive horned Saurial (he looks like an ogre sized version of Grimdrek), with his one silver gauntlet and a bastard sword with a blade wider than a cleaver says: “Ah, professor Berko, welcome to the Court of the Triad; and you brought a friend I see (fixing Martine with an appraising eye).  Come to confess your sins perhaps? (said with a chuckle). How can I aid you? Have you been to the lower planes recently, you both smell of brimstone.”

“That accursed fiend. I hope you put an end to him. I cannot send you directly home. The Habololian powers frown upon our interference. But I can send you to Stasis’ realm and from there you can easily make your way to Habololy.” He gestures to the great door.

As you pass the door it takes a moment to adjust. The interior of the hall is so vast you can’t take it all in. It is covered in art, ornate carvings and trophies. There is a center aisle ending in an empty head table, flanked by countless communal tables. As you proceed up the aisle, out of the corner of your eyes on either side you see hundreds of thousands of beings of every race feasting and engaging in contests, but if you look to either side they disappear. Martine unconsciously grasps his sword.

Sharkandrik says: “As long as you mean no harm they cannot interact with you.”

He leads you out to a patio with half a dozen winding staircases, each leading up to an arch that stands unsupported on a landing.

“Ordinarily my lord would expect you to climb and given what I sense from each of you it would likely be a day or more of hard going. But, as your errand is important, I’ll send you to the top. Safe journey home. Enjoy Palladia, even if your visit is short.”

You emerge into a room made of stone but covered in the same symbols and art as the hall you just left. A woman and a dwarf eating at a table are startled by your arrival. She is armed as a shield maiden and the dwarf has a heavy warhammer. “What’s your business here?” Says the woman.

They give each other a skeptical look and rise to escort you out. Martine bows and thanks them.

You exit the temple into brilliant sunlight and blue skies but before you take more than a step Martine draws his sword and exclaims “Oh, by all the powers and their castle!”  Directly across the street from you is a massive tower, easily the largest structure you have ever seen (and it occurs to Parker you’ve seen it before) and lying at its gate is an immense bronze dragon. It is lying on the flagstones on its back, snoring.  At Martine’s statement, or perhaps the sound of his sword leaving its sheath, the great wyrm rolls its head over and opens one eye.

Martine takes no action but mutters (probably to himself) “Somehow Metakae is responsible for this. It’s his revenge for all the sparring matches he’s lost over the years.”

The dragon rouses itself further. It cracks its back and shoulders and shakes off so much pollen that both you and Martine are covered in gold and silver.

Well that’s not good.

Being the cohort of a planar ranger, Navi does have an emergency response plan for unwanted interdimensional travel, as long as it works here. Know(planes) check 26. Will plane shift work?

If yes, Navi puts some vertical distance between her and the approaching devils (fly speed=90), pulls out a scroll, and casts plane shift to get back to Habololy.

Eleven eyes all blink in unison.

“Well, that sounds very impressive and very important. Let’s see (chuckle) you home safely.”

It rotates in place and sets off.  It leads you up a wide boulevard, where you see a wide variety of beings, prime and planar, and leads you to a temple of Stasis, which appears to be a nearly exact copy of the High Temple in Messada.

As he approaches he hails an archon who appears to be keeping a visitor log. “Good day Triesius, these wayward mortals are in need of safe passage back to Habololy. I think this one is Parker Berko, the great bard who assisted in delivering the Throne to Lord Stasis. But he’s not sure if he is or is not Parker Berko so neither am I (chuckle).”

The archon (who looks like a small grizzly bear with less feral features) says good day gentlemen. If you would write your names in the book I will find a cleric who can open the portal for you.”

Parker writes his name with a flourish...

Both Parker and Martine’s names appear in a metallic similar to steel, drawing a frown from the Archon.

He departs and returns with a human woman and a tall winged man armed with a bastard sword and wearing half plate armor. He looks very much like Arion. He says “Let them pass. Despite their lack of direction they have done great service to the Light and our Lord.”

The woman escorts you through the temple down a set of spiral stairs to a glowing portal. “This will take you to the High Temple in Messada.”

Martine goes through before you get to the Gemblade family.

You emerge in an identical room with the portal behind you. Awaiting you is a dwarf, who Parker has at least seen if not met, Buld Mountainmagic.  He bows to Martine. “Greetings professor and welcome back.”

Round 6- Solaris rallies the Icefians
Round 7- Second round of Archon boulders
Round 8- Benlin’s cometfall

Here is Benlin and Asinjin's plan.  Asinjin is going to fly out and create a roughly 1500 foot diameter windstorm with a Limited Wish Control Winds.  He is going to have the wind push everyone into the eye of the storm.  Note that unless they get Asinjin into an Anti magic field, the winds are not stopped.  Benlin waits at the appropriate distance to prevent the Bloated from dispelling, by having a Dispel Magic Counterspell ready.

After the Winds are ready Asinjin Dimension Doors to Benlin who then flies to the center of the storm above it.  Asinjin then readies the Dispel Magic Counterspell.  Once to the center of the storm, where there is now a giant pile of wugs nicely in a small radius, Benlin casts Cometfall in that area.

Thoughts?

Solaris is currently in an antimagic field. To escape (which would clearly end your fanaticism bonus for the troops) you will have to full withdraw back through the Icefian lines.

I will place it so that they will have to go through the wind to get in.  Every round moving through it requires a save, so only those very close have any chance of getting in to the city, and those that do we come in at a rate the archons can handle.  Keep in mind when they miss a save, they are pushed towards the center.

Readying and action to cast a Dispel Magic as a Counterspell when the Bloated casts.  I can identify the spell using spellcraft before it casts to decide if I want to dispel it.  But its either counter or nothing for that round.

In other words, I ready an action for him casting...I don't have to specify the ready to a specific spell.

Spellcraft check of 40, can I tell what the power level is?

I do not counter that.  It is a full round spell, its range it close, and the create can't enter any of the anti magic fields.  It also means the Bloated is not in an anti magic field.

He summons 4 large earth elementals.

The earth elementals dive into the earth under the wug corps.

The remnants of the north and north center corps not in the windstorm splinter. Some head to the gate, taking fire from the archons and the city defenses. Others swarm behind the other divisions attacking the Icefian lines.

Round 20- the elementals emerge in front of the Bloated’s corps and attempt to form a shield against the wind but they are not big enough to form a meaningful shield.

Arion unleashes another beam of celestial light from the Gemblade. It cuts a swath through the wug lines and sends those that can see it into a panic.

A lull in the battles against the wug and barbarians begins after dark and a makeshift headquarters forms near the ruins of the gate. Thale has blocked the gate with walls of stone and all of the city’s living archers and artillery men have reached their positions. The wug retreated during the spell barrage after their antimagic skins expired but when darkness fell they renewed their assault on the walls.

Inside, battle against the barbarians becomes vicious street by street, house by house fighting that slows after dark. Queen Irene and her house guard were found safe with the children of the city inside the temple of Stasis.

Oliver and Nisoru find you as people are passing out rations. Oliver has a few wounds and his garb is bloodied. Nisoru has few if any wounds but his usually gleaming mithril armor is darkened. Elayu, always meticulously clean, is covered in gore and finds a clean place on the walls to scrub some of it off.

After the army and city commanders give their reports Gales relates the following:

“When I took Aesculos and Firfin back to Portet it was immediately apparent that the situation was far from ideal. First, we appeared no where near where I intended and I suspected that were were delayed and then hedged out. For those of you that haven’t been there, Portet is city is split east and west by a river, crossed only by a single ancient bridge. The bridge has been destroyed and its rubble is blocking the river. The northwest section of the city is dominated by the high temple of Falan. Firfin and Ajax asked me to take them to the bottom of the hill leading up to the temple, but we appeared on the other side of the river (and I am somewhat thankful for it).

Outside the city, around the temple the city defenders were fighting with the attacking scaled elven forces. Firfin said the battle was about even but then the shadow wyrm appeared. It unleashed its breath weapon upon the defenders and then alighted a’top the temple of Falan.  When we arrived it was still perched on the roof but had torn a hole in it above the great hall. Firfin told me that all of those slain, on either side were immediately rising as undead. As we took stock, I saw the wyrm breathe into the hole and a pulse of green light flashed out and in response dozens of undead appeared around the temple. They have surrounded the temple. I could see Escalon and many others fighting at the foot of the hill. That is where I intended to take Ajax and Firfin across the river when suddenly I heard a word of dark power and I was banished back to the celestial heaven and left in very poor condition. I should not have been able to return so soon but Lady Hemator intervened and returned me to you.

The wug retreated during the spell barrage after their antimagic skins expired but when darkness fell they renewed their assault on the walls.

How many are left when they retreat?

Because I haven't yet detailed it yet, here is the devastation Benlin and his familiar wrought before their retreat:

Draconic polymorph turns them both into Huge Woolly Mammoths.  With haste and elation, a double move takes them 120 feet each round.  They will be enlarged, so they go to Gigantic, which gives them each a 20 foot space.  So each round, they cover 2400 square feet with trample.  Two of them so 4800 square feet a round.  Anyone in that area takes 2d10+25 damage, if we hit with a +19 attack roll.  They can stand and make a -4 AoO.  If they don't make an AoO, they can attempt to make a DC34 reflex save for half damage.

So in the 16 rounds we have that, that is 76,800 square feet of battle field that we clear.  If relevant, I can list the defense we have up; which include displacement and AC over 30 and DR, as well as Spell Resistance and Freedom of movement.

Asinjin prepares more Limited Wishes.  As soon as they camp, he goes out and drops another controls winds on the group, again pushing them into a pile for three hours.  This time I Widen it to get an 2800 foot radius circle.

I can do that three times.  That's 1.5 miles of windstorm for three hours.  If possible, I throw them into the pit.

Once they retreat, they don't get to come back.

If need be, once they are all bunched in the center of the windstorm, Benlin and fly above it and Heaven's Trumpet.  I don't think that will be necessary, but it will kill all of the nicely bunched Wugs.

Between the Woolly trampling and the windstorm, we make efforts to get them to flee.  Announcements and calls and parleys.

Very much so.  Oddly enough, riding a wildy enhanced gigantic wooly mammoth while shooting at evil warmongers was on Rubius' bucket list.  At least I can check that off before the campaign ends.  ;D

Maybe now Ari can officially arrest Falan for creating a weapon of mass destruction in the middle of Portet. I knew that inanimate carbon rod was going to be a problem.

There are about 75000 wug and kobolds left when the antimagic expires. The mammoths wreak havoc throughout the “lines”. The kobolds in particular get the worst of it. The wug clear out as soon as it begins. The battlefield is close to 3,000,000 square feet (5000x600, irregular in shape) so you’re most effective breaking the lines behind the front, who are still trying to move forward.

They retreat into the maw and wait out the wind storms.

Each Windstorm is 6,000,000 square feet.  (3.14 x 1400 x 1400).  That should get everyone.

They are not waiting out being caught in hurricane winds for three hours, they are dying.

To be clear, I am not trying to block their path, I cast it on them.

Inside, battle against the barbarians becomes vicious street by street, house by house fighting that slows after dark. Queen Irene and her house guard were found safe with the children of the city inside the temple of Stasis.
Ari helps track down and route out the barbarian invaders. Can use detect evil radar, mundane tracking, and tracking by lingering evil auras to locate them. Focusing on the most dangerous first (highest power determined by detect evil or largest groups)

The winds are not a tornado, even though they are that strength.  But here is what happens to creatures in a Hurricane force wind, as per the d20 wind rules:

https://www.d20srd.org/srd/weather.htm

Medium or smaller (so nearly all) make a DC20 Fort save (could argue DC30 because of wind strength even though not swirling) Blown Away: Creatures on the ground are knocked prone and rolled 1d4×10 feet, taking 1d4 points of nonlethal damage per 10 feet.

That is where the damage comes from.

If they do retreat into the maw, we can cast a blizzard over it, which will cover a 1800 foot radius with 18 feet of snow.  There are lots of rules for that, but the snow doesn't disappear, they might take non lethal cold damage, and it will take them forever to dig out.

Those that make it to the maw you dump the blizzard on. Michael says “In the morning I will pray for two Earthquakes. That should trap them if not wipe most of them out. We’ll need Lord Colrain and the Order of the Sunlight Below to make sure.”

Benlin does not listen much and is withdrawn after the battle.  Without Kerkly there and now that the adrenalin of battle has worn off, he is sad and a but scared.  He finds a place to rest and sleeps, likely casting a spell on himself to do so.

Asinjin, coughing terribly from the exertion of the day, weary and seemingly cold despite the magic to keep him comfortable, asks again, "Do we need to travel there tonight, or do we rest first?"  Also, having heard of the trouble in Portet, he thinks to Rubius and Ari, "We need a slayer."

Kerkly travels tirelessly (Unfailing Endurance) towards the closest border town, having little idea of when he will arrive but still in communication telepathically (18 hours).  He is the most optimistic, recounting that when the day is remember, it will be a victory for the forces of good at Degalas.

Sensing his distress, Astrek flops down heavily next to Benlin with an exaggerated sigh in a crude attempt at a comforting gesture.

I am eager to leave now, but we would do little good as reinforcements if we show up wounded and depleted. Our spellcasters need rest. We need to recover Shaar and Kerkly. And we need to connect with our allies in Portet.

Navi is out of teleports. Can someone give me a ride to a few miles outside of Portet? I can go on ahead and scout out the situation before we go charging in.

Kerkly is the one with the spells to do that, and he can't from the outlands.

Asinjin could do it the next day, but just Shaar and at the cost of powerful spells that are probably more needed for the battle.

Doesn't he?  Benlin is a cohort, right?

"Cohorts earn XP as follows:

The cohort does not count as a party member when determining the party’s XP.

Divide the cohort’s level by the level of the PC with whom he or she is associated (the character with the Leadership feat who attracted the cohort).

Multiply this result by the total XP awarded to the PC and add that number of experience points to the cohort’s total.

If a cohort gains enough XP to bring it to a level one lower than the associated PC’s character level, the cohort does not gain the new level—its new XP total is 1 less than the amount needed to attain the next level."

If you mean the defenses of Degalas, Oliver has taken command of the army and the city guard. He is the most experienced commander present.

Michael tells you: “I received a Sending from the high cleric of Stasis in Portet seeking immediate aid. At about the same time the high cleric of Gnarion in Messada received a sending from Cassius Wokal, a powerful cleric of Gnarion and leader of the Guardians, that the sect was sending all available warriors to Portet. The horde of undead blocking the way sounds like an excellent opportunity for the Trampling Mammoths of Benlin...

- Freedom of Movement
- Elation
- Improved Indivisibility
- Mage Armor
- Blindsight
- Improvisation
- Resist Energy (Cold)
- Lion's Roar aid
- Haste
- Int Telepathic Bond
- Greater Anticipate Teleport
- Fortunate Fate
- Spell Resistance
- Divine Power
