Title: The Transfer
Post by: whitesword on September 07, 2011, 08:20:58 AM
After Corum dismisses you the room begins to empty out however First Deputy Holts is still at the front of the room speaking with some of the other deputies.

You can discuss here what if anything you did during the two weeks prior to the meeting and what you do the day after.  You have three full days to report but it is about three days to Phiam over land.

I ask the others, "Have you ever been to Phiam?  I visited briefly on several occasions, but don't know a lot about the city."

Are they going to send us in a group, el la Caravan?  Or are we to get there any way we can.

How long does it take to get there via boat?

"A boat would typically take longer.  Down the rover and along the coast.  But since the river is running fast right now, maybe not.  Either way is fine with me."

I was more asking in a official caravan to make sure we get there.

Vasili also asks... "Are all the commands linked, Is there one governmental office that oversees all constables, or are the command in each city different with slightly different rules?"

"There is a unified command.  The laws are kingdom wide."

Uleric tells the group: "Even if f there is no official caravan of Transfers, I'm going by land.  If need be, I'll send word to the other Transfers through their commanders and start a caravan of our own to get there.  'Strength in numbers' and all."

"Walking will be fine.  The road is not dangerous for four or five constables.  The weather is nicer than usual."

The East, or Phiam, Road is perhaps the safest in the Kingdom ( The Colonye Road might beat it but for natural dangers like floods and mudslides near the river). The lands between Messada and Phiam are nearly free of monsters and even dangerous animals are rare as those lands have been over hunted for centuries.

I ask the sergeant, "Will are living quarters be similar in Phiam?"

What mission ?

When do you ask the sergeant?

There is no formal caravan planned and it would be at least five days by boat.

I ask the sergeant the next time I see him.

Unless you seek him out you will not see the Sergeant before you depart.

Then I ask the nearest superior.

The first deputy of Messada, Ankin Holts, is the only supervisor in the room.

I don't ask him.  I start asking around if any constable has been one in Phiam.

After a few minutes of listening its clear that all those selected are in their first three years, have no military experience and have only been assigned to Messada.

Do I know of anyone I have run into in the past 8 months in the constablatory that has worked in Phiam?

Yes, you old sergeant Donovan March was assigned to Phiam.  March is near retirement and terribly overweight but he was a fair supervisor who knew most people in his patrol area.  He did not spend much time on the rookies.

I ask him about life as a constable in Phiam.

The walk from HQ to your old watch station is quick. You find sgt. March sitting in an armless chair behind the rail. Not surprisingly he has a large meal of a whole roast pheasant and rice in front of him.

He is happy to see you in the same way as teachers are happy to see former students. He tells you the following:  I last served in Phiam some 8 or 9 years ago. During my time there I was assigned to three stations: the southwest, which is good relatively quiet duty. The temples are there and a few good inns.  You get curtpurses and scam artists but rarely anything violent. I served in the north dock ward for a while when things were bad. Up there the Dock Rats ran things; after they wiped out their rivals that is. I hear it's better there now but at one point we were allowed lethal arms at all times. Last I served in the northwest. There its mostly poor working folks but they get drunk and fight and steal more than most. The dump is up there and we would find bodies there from time to time. I hear they found a shrine to Dresta there a few years back.

Any specific questions?

"Thank you for speaking with us, Sergeant."  Rob is respectful and professional during the conversation.

"Are the laws in the two cities, Phiam and Messada, entirely the same?"

Yes, because both cities are in the lands of the High King the criminal laws are the same.

"Is there anyone you would suggest staying away from?  Anyone who could be of assistance to a constable in need?"

Donovan shakes his head. "I don't know the players there anymore. The first deputy Brentan Firepeak has a good reputation; supposedly the best fighter in the constabulary, though for the work we do I'll take Chartal the Bull anyday. The second deputy Udarin Thate is supposed to be the best investigator in the Kingdom but I've never met the man." Thinking for a moment, "There were two sergeants I worked with who were both still there last I checked." "Curran Spence is a good man, half elf actually, who knows his business, he may be an investigator now. He always had a good relationship with the non-human population." "The other was Tramel Quarterman; street smart and tough he always had good information. He was the one guy the Rats were a little afraid of in those years."

"As for who to turn to for help, well I really don't know. Depends on the trouble your in but in Phiam, when I was there, the only person you could count on was you."

On a different note, who took over the investigation of the burglary of the book store?  I am hoping we found this out between when it happened and now.

You did not ask before you came to HQ and unless you intend to find magical transport to Phiam you will not have time to find out and still make it to Phiam to report as ordered.

Vasili says "No, I lack the needed concentration"

Unless there is something you need to accomplish, and it can be done in a few overnight hours, you set out the next morning overland to Phiam.

Can we expect to be able to come back to Messada at any time during our assignment?

There is no prohibition against travel but in your first year and a half you are unlikely to get more than two or three days leave so even if you added that after your regular days off you would not be able to make a round trip without magical aid.

Rob does not spend the night at the barracks.
